If there has been a better cover than this it must be a cracker.a masterpiece from Guy Garvey.

It's bloody awful, and I'm a big Elbow fan.

Decent effort but doesn't come close to Glen Campbell's masterpiece for me

Just to prove musical tastes vary hugely- I thought that Garvey effort was unimpressive. I say that as someone who got, and enjoyed, the first four Elbow albums 2001- 2008.

No. As wonderful as Campbell's version is, it's best sung by Webb himself. Webb's more ragged voice only serves to amplify the beauty of the greatest popular song ever written.

Webb’s version is a cover of Campbell’s version of Webb’s song! :)

The Elbow version is pretty ropey though to be fair. The original recording by Campbell is amazing and takes me to Kansas and those long straight roads in the middle of nowhere that you associate with that part of the US whereas the Elbow version sounds like something cobbled together on a Friday morning as a last minute idea of what to play when invited to do something for the Radio 2 Breakfast Show. It’s a pretty bog standard cover of a song with no thought or feeling put into it.

Has anyone seen this version of Stairway to Heaven that has Robert Plant welling up by the way? Not my favourite cover by the way but it’s pretty impressive.

Dreadful.

May as well get the Wurzels to cover it next.

It's about the mid-west, not Bury Market ffs.

I think there will be some just creaming over this because A) it’s elbow, and B) it was done live on the “Chris Evans with tits” breakfast show.

My own observation being that they are BOTH a little pretentious.

Hundreds and hundreds of better covers out there. I’m off to look for some links on the yootoob.

Here’s one that blows elbows effort right out the water.

Not really : since the very first recording, albeit never released, was Webb's demo sent to Campbell of a song that wasn't finished yet as it was a verse short. It never has been finished...

Webb also takes some of Campbell's versions back to how they were intended. Not so much this one but he's pretty down on how 'Galveston' was arranged for example.

My mum and dad used to have that pub before I was born. Apparently dad used to have a bookies runner (illegal then) so that the guys didn’t have to leave the pub to put a bet on.

Heard this yesterday morning on Radio 2(including the coughing). Some things are better just left alone to stand the test of time. Most things by Glen Campbell fit that category.

The Teddy Bears 'To Know Him Is To Love Him' was covered a number of years by the incomparable trio of Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris. Three vocalists of the highest quality who enhanced an already classic song.
