We would have beaten plenty of teams today

Take out the stupid mistakes we played very well for the most part and more importantly kept battling away. I genuinely think we would beat most teams outside of the top 6 or 7 sides playing like we did today. On to next week !

Strange old game. Most unlike us to be so poor defensively but fair play to Chelsea for being so clinical. As you say i don't think teams like Sheff Utd or Newcastle would have punished us as much

Why? Are there any games we should have a right to win? We have to fight every game.

Silly goals, but I thought we weren't that bad.

Onwards.

We are in absolutely no danger of going down and id say a top 10 finish is more than realistic. Couple of rare individual errors today and if wood was on the pitch things would have been much different of that im sure. Hopefully the Wood boo boys now see how important he is to us!

Sorry for the copy and paste but it probably fits better on this thread.

We controlled long periods of that game, Barnes missed 2 sitters, Jay missed one and we were undone by uncharacteristic defensive errors. Chelsea capitalised on them very well but we could easily have won that

Not from where I was sat. We were in the game first half, but not much second half. I can't really remember us controlling for any sustained period.

I said to the wife after 20mins (who has no interest at all) how far we’ve come to be able to give a side like Chelsea a game and cause them problems and on our day have a chance of getting a result. Then we gifted them the first and went on to be 4 down. But we created some great chances. Possibly even better than theirs but it just didn’t go for us today. There’s no way we deserved 4-0 so glad we got a couple back and overall some great positives. Shame we used up a VAR decision when it didn’t matter

Weird game today . Brighton, villa and Leicester all looked better than Chelsea today. Even at 3 down I thought we could have won it. First 2 goals were sloppy . and we should have been 2 up by that point. Usually if we had been beaten 4-2 I would be fuming , today its just bad luck. We even got a bar decision. I think we need to get Taylor back playing . Posters is solid defending but present offer a lot going forwars.

We’d lose most games making mistakes like that but generally played really well, with the exception of 20 minutes after the fourth.

Shot ourselves in the foot today on a few occasions at both ends of the pitch. Apart from those incidents we played pretty well.

Our passing were borderline diabolical. Gave the ball away nearly every other pass which isn't good enough.

Bizzare game,2 unlucky goals 1st half and 0-2 to Chelsea is never gonna be easy. Though we created a lot of chances Barnes missed 3 and JayRod 1 of top of my head And some uncharacteristic dodgy defending and at times awful
passing .Though we also won plenty of 50/50’s Clinical goals 3 and 4 though, but we kept at it and a Jay Rod screamer is a positive for his confidence . On another day we could have won that. However that does not hide from
our overall mediocrity this season

Not sure how we got 74% passing success if that was the case.

Similar to the Liverpool game, defenders giving away the ball cheaply. The top teams will always take advantage and we are then vulnerable to counter attacks.

Crazy game, heavily influenced by several mistakes by us at both ends of the pitch.

But no, we wouldn’t have beaten many teams playing like that. I thought we resembled a newly promoted team today. Spirited at times, but ultimately lacking quality when it mattered.

Bad day at the office against a team that will finish in the top 4 but we still scored twice.

Don’t agree with this at all. Our issue is one of an established premier league team constantly evolving to a point where we really give the big 6 teams a game... this season particularly we are creating far more chances and scoring more goals. The top teams exploit any slight mistakes and that has happened only in the 2 home games we have lost against the big 6 teams. However, the way we create chances and score goals in pretty much every game show how far we have come. We are nothing like a newly promoted team.

Interesting point as at 0-2 down ( 2nd half and playing well ) guy next to me said “ this feels like watching Norwich “ Though we had to have a go and against European super power clubs we do often look naive

Pulisic will never get a luckier hat trick. First went thru 3 players and Pope was unsighted. Second was a huge deflection like McNeil’s. Third was a header that would normally miss by a country mile. Looks a good player but should do for what he cost

First half was very similar to Liverpool - a couple of good chances to take the lead before we conceded twice in quick succession to a mistake and a deflection - difference in the second half was that Chelsea kept coming forward - scored and conceded - Liverpool just killed it.

Liverpool will finish first or second, Chelsea look like top four material and I think the transformation under Lampard after a shaky start is quite remarkable.

A year ago this weekend Chelsea came here and beat us 4-0 today I thought we were a lot better today - we've lost four times this season to the teams currently 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th - three of them are going strong in Europe as well and the other recorded a record-breaking 9-0 away win last night.

We're a team likely to yo-yo somewhere between 8th and 16th - a drastic improvement from the shambles this time last year and still a huge achievement for a club of our stature up against this level of competition.

On balance the better team won. Oil money buys you that. We tried and huffed and puffed but not really good enough TBH.

Could be a significant goal in the final analysis.
We're + 7 goals up on Southampton over the weekend.
Had we lost about 6-0, (which looked a distinct possibility for a while), then our goal difference would have taken a real hammering. Losing by 2 goals to a good in-form Chelsea team isn't a bad scoreline.
The frustrating thing is the manner in which we gifted them their goals.

Agre with the original title, however, to do that you have to take your chances, we had some good ones in the first half but sadly missed them.

No shame about getting beaten by Chelsea. We never gave up has the two late goals prove. Chelsea, City and Liverpool are miles apart from the rest

Why don't people understand? That's what and where we are, ....if it wasn't for missed chances? If it wasn't for silly errors?
That's what we do because, against better teams, we are not really good enough.

Not a negative we lost criticism......read we’ve won 1 in 26 against top 6 .........

Stats are stats are stats but something must be wrong when we get a “free hit”.........as long as we don’t get tonked 9-0

The other end of the league must be incredible results, but 1 in 26.......
