Line-up's are interesting.

Aston Villa: Nyland, Elmohamady, Chester, Konsa, Taylor, Lansbury, Douglas Luiz, Hourihane, Jota, Kodjia, Trezeguet. Subs: McGinn, Wesley, Grealish, El Ghazi, Guilbert, Kalinic, Hause.

Liverpool: Kelleher, Hoever, van den Berg, Boyes, Gallacher, Kane, Chirivella, Christie-Davies, Elliott, Hill, Longstaff. Subs: Clarkson, Norris, Winterbottom, Dixon-Bonner, Clayton, Bearne, Stewart.

Nope i haven't heard of any of the Liverpool squad either,a strong bench for Villa if they need to ring the changes,i assume Liverpool will be fined for fielding a weakened team ;)

Villa make ten changes also. Could be embarrassing if Liverpool beat them.
Surprised though a chance of a cup semi-final when it was known the Scousers were going to put a young team out.

Very surprised at Villa putting a reserve side out in the later rounds.
Another manager not bothered about winning a trophy.

Villa are 4th from bottom and want to stay in the Premier League, so not too much of a surprise really.

The highest player No is 99 - and he's started.

The total of the starting 11 is 737
The total of the bench is 552

Making a grand total of 1289 !!!!!

This must be a record, surely.

I've gone for the Plymouth/Bristol Rovers game in the hope of a tasty, kicking-lumps-off-each-other West country derby, but its pretty tame so far.

Harvey Elliott looks a prospect,i wouldn't mind him on loan in January, him and Dwight on both wings would give us a different dimension.

Hard to believe he's only 16.

Bit of a harsh result first half, Pedro Chirivella looks a decent player in the middle of the park , 22 years old holding midfielder. Interesting to see his second half display, looks very comfortable on the ball.

Wouldn’t happen, imagine a hand goes in the wrong place either way...and it’s misconstrued..too controversial a subject

just sums up the attitude towards cups comps, does a great disservice to the other lesser teams involved, but small wonder fans disregard these affairs thesedays. Only the extremely gullible will consider a victory as something special.

Complete disrespect for a cup competition by Liverpool. Couldn’t give a rats arse about a club World Cup or whatever it is. Had to look it up as didn’t know it was on or where it was. No doubt all about cash and sums up what is wrong with football.

How else were Liverpool going to do it? Send out the kids to play in the World Club Cup Competition and get banned from UEFA events for 2 years? They took their whole 25 player PL squad to the WCCC and essentially wrote off the League Cup.

you are correct, but there's always a more alluring prize for the big clubs, and still the football media trot out the nonsense of the magic of the cup.what a load of ,,,,,,,,,

It's not just tonight,PL and even Championship and lower league teams, treat this cup as little more than a training exercise, and a chance to blood youngsters and give fringe players a run-out,heavens even Burnley & Sunderland fielded second strings in an earlier round.

There is going to have to be a serious rethink of the fixture calendar in forthcoming seasons, and sad as it maybe, this competition has become surplus to requirements for most teams.

Had to smile when reading that Harvey Elliot when making his EFL cup debut last year was so young he had to have his own changing room on child protection grounds.

I think Klopp used this fixture to make a point. They could have flown 15 of the first team squad out and a few reserves to play against the might of Monterrey leaving a reasonable team to play Villa reserves, then have them join up tomorrow in time for the final.

Quite a number of other countries have ditched their equivalent of the League Cup and it would not surprise me to see the same thing happen in England within the next few years, particularly if the European Championship etc. change their system.
