Manufacturers service

Can anyone recommend for or against getting a manufacturers service on vehicles? Mine is still under warranty but looking at service packs and / or individual service for when it will be needed. Cost to get a pack through the dealer seems excessive, but obviously they will use genuine parts etc and will this significantly protect the value of the car among other things?

On very high end stuff, I would advise sticking rigidly to Franchised dealers.
However, with the advent of 5 - 7 year warranties from some of the mass market manufacturers, it may be worth paying that bit extra to have these cars serviced at the dealers, as there can then be no question of inferior parts/fluids etc causing any subsequent issues and thus invalidating the warranty.
Whatever car you have, always, always get the service book stamped and the mileage noted on every service, whoever does it ! Long gaps between evidenced services will hit it's residual value and make it more difficult to sell. If you're trying to sell a car privately, get all your paperwork together in a file, invest £30 in a decent valet, and get it pre-tested for a new MOT and get one. A car with a 12 month ticket, will sell quicker than one with 1-3 months, people are scared of " buying themselves a bill " ... finally, make sure the clocks show the right time, get rid of any non dealer stickers ( " powered by pixie-dust " etc ), get a new set of Main dealer number plates ( if they're cracked/chipped or have water ingress ), tune the Radio in to Radio 4/ Classic FM and be honest in your advert ....

Is it a lease/PCP that you’re intending to hand back or do you own/intend to own the car?

Thanks sound advice. Although not looking (or at least not hoping to) sell.

I own it. Not intending to sell it any time soon. Will either keep it a very long time and get plenty of use out of it or sell after a couple of years when bored and before I have done too many miles in it to make it pointless selling

Haggle with your main dealer. There is no longer a requirement to get your servicing done by the dealer to protect the warranty, but it does make it a hell of a lot easier if there are issues. I managed to get another 3 years servicing and warranty at 3 years old for £1400 from the dealer - which was based on 25k miles/year. That includes MOTs and roadside assistance.

Probably best to take the advice of others then. I have had recent experience with servicing a car on PCP which I intend to hand back in 12 months time. If you own the car then the a non-dealership service may affect the value. For what it’s worth I found a garage which was approved by the manufacturer and used genuine parts/oil etc. This cost approx £350 as opposed to the £550 quoted by the dealership.

I am a buyer for webuyanycar. We count services from any garage with a vat no on the invoice which must have at least an oil filter on the invoice. Stamps in the book also count as do electronic print outs from audi, mercedes etc. Bmw i drive has the history on the on board computer which is also obviously valid.

Depends if you want an engine going pop and paying £10k for a new one.
Stick with it until its out of warranty is my advice

Whilst under warranty I would go with the main dealer (although legally you don't need to - just makes things easier if the worst happens). Not all main dealers charge the same price, and I've found out that if you call and ask for a price first its usually cheaper than booking in without asking. Call around the main dealers.

Thanks. That's actually more than I was quoted (although mine didn't include extending the warranty which I may ask about) but did include 3 MOTs and was based on 20k miles which I expect I will do each year.
£1,100 I was quote from dealer.

That’s not a bad price - it’s the mileage that bumps it on a service plan. Get quotes from other dealers and haggle

iF you're planning on keeping it for a few years and doing 20k miles p.a. ( Diesel, I presume ? ), then I would advise an extra oil and filter change every six months or 10k miles ....

Yes Diesel. It needs to go in next week so will book a minor service / oil check etc.

My car has just gone out of warranty, all of a sudden the main dealer service price has dropped about 40% to become comparable with everyone else. Funny that!

When I bought my current car... 12 months old from Motorpoint I organised a 3 year service pack with Jaguar/Landrover at Brierfield, its paid monthly and is a 0% finance deal, and saves money over that period with discounted servicing costs .... it also ensures the 4 year warranty is kept up to date.
This all in turn keeps the value of the car at a premium....
Not sure about extended warranties as have never had one or needed one.

True, it could affect any finance agreement pertaining to the said vehicle though.

This company will pick up car from work/home and deliver it back after service. They also claim that all the parts used are manufacturer approved.
