Barca v Real Madrid - about 100,000 - not sure of exact attendance....I should look it up really
It was a game that Real Madrid won- Ronaldo (Mark 1), Figo, Beckham, Zidane etc.
Bit surreal as could not see or hear any away fans so it was basically a wall of high pitched booing for most of the game.

That makes me a proper lightweight.

80,841 v Wolves in 1988.

80,518 v Sheffield United in 2009.

FA cup quarter final v Newcastle at Hillsborough. Brother and I got tickets for wrong end. Bit uncomfortable as both wearing blazers with Lancashire rose on top pocket.
SHERPA van final.
Biggest at Turf, FA cup replay vs Chelsea 32,000+ I believe.

SVT for me too,bit of a culture shock for a 12 year-old when i attended my first league match the following season, and there was about 6/7,000 on against torquay, with a smattering in the away end.

Non-Burnley games Celtic Park around 60,000,with a handful of away supporters in situ.Got gifted complimentary tickets by a family friend who couldn't attend, and therefore we were able to sample the hospitality suite, impressive i must say,and very welcome on a freezing Glasgow evening to get a warm at HT.

2009 play off final at Wembley is the largest crowd I think but at Turf Moor I was amongst about 45000 in 1967, (I think) v Liverpool and 42000 in the same season v Everton.

That’s strange, I didn’t see you either, or maybe you were stood next to me!!….....

I don’t suppose you were at the BFC/Fulham FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park, Mar ’62, attendance 59,989? I was, albeit not for long. Got there early, stood behind the goal a few rows back from the wall, as the stadium filled up, some d*ckhead way up at the back decided to throw a bottle just for fun, hit me on the head. Medics took me to hospital for stitches, missed the damn game. :(

Drew 1-1, won the replay at Filbert St though……….nope, didn’t see that one, Mum wouldn’t let me go :o

Strange thing about those three games, even though all were massive attendances, I remember feeling quite comfortable at each one. The exact opposite applied at Goodison Park in Dec'60, the gate was 74,867 and you literally could not move. That was the most uncomfortable I've ever experienced at a match.

It was a Friday night and we lost 0-2 sending them to Division One and we finished 13th in Division Two.

Following season we were relegated to Division Three.

Highest ever confirmed attendance in the UK was at Hampden Park for the 1937 Scotland v England Home International, 149,547 !

The highest ever world-wide, is thought to be the deciding pool match in the 1950 World Cup ( The only World Cup where the winners were determined by a final 4 Group stage ), 199,854 !!

Largest crowd at t'Turf I guess is 1970 FA Cup replay v Chelsea - though quite how many were on and how many were locked outside I don't know if anyone really knows. Or, maybe it was one or other of the ManU games in mid-60s while we still had the old Cricket Field stand. Anglo-Scottish v Celtic was also pretty busy in 1978!

Other Burnley games, are all at Wembley: Sherpa Van, Stockport and Sheff Utd. Newcastle at Hillsborough - which was semi-final (and not quarter, as posted by another above) - though I wonder whether Emirates and new WHL at 60,000 have exceeded the numbers at Hillsborough (I'm not that great a stato, to remember).

I also got to World Cup semi at Stade de France, France v Croatia, 1998, capacity above 80,000.

Yes, Brazil played Uruguay in the final pool match in a winner takes all game, Uruguay won 2-1 !
Incidentally, Brazil's 7-1 win over Sweden in that final pool was refereed by Arthur Ellis, later of " It's a Knockout " fame ! Poor gate though, only 138,886 ... :D

Wile E Coyote, I used to go to the Scotland v England games in the 60s and 70s, with crowds of 120,000, but another 10,000 were estimated to be inside. It was rife to see the turnstile operators taking Pound notes and more from drunken Scots, who then slipped under the turnstiles.
ExileinCanada, if you had ginger hair and I think called Paul, who lived in Fulledge, I was stood next to you, when you were hit, smack on the back your head, by a empty half whisky bottle.

exileincanada, after my last post, I recalled you lived on higher Brunshaw Rd. I remember you had a phone ( not many had then) in the house and we would ring Woolers for a Taxi, but gave him the address of someone opposite. When he arrived we were peeping out through the curtains, while he went away without a fare. A boyish prank.

The Maracana did for years have a capacity of 200k. Amazing ain't it? There have been attendances of 150k or more on 26 occasions. The last time was in '83 when Flamengo played Santos with over 155k on. Not sure if it's changed but 4 clubs shared the ground at one time. It has seen over 100k 284 times. Nothing compares.

I remember Stan Flashman (former ticket tout) chairman/owner of Barnet, used to have sbout 2000 fans at Barnet. When they were top of the league, the number did not increase much. When we played them in top of the table clash, Burnley fans were literally jammed together. The rest of the ground was full. The number recorded did go up but I think they just counted us!

Nowadays, in the prem, it seems to work the other way! How to be there, when you are not!

It was 52,000 but in March 1962. We've got a picture from the day in our scrapbook of Everton fans on the roof of the Longside. Won the game 3-1 to progress to 6 th rnd of FA Cup.

Watching the Clarets it has to be the three most recent Wembley appearances plus visits to Old Trafford in the 60s when standing was allowed.
Other big attendances I've been in; Celtic European night at Parkhead in the days of Jimmy Johnstone & Co. Anfield when they beat Borussia Munching Gladrags in a Euro semi 2nd leg and Goodison for the 2nd leg of the Euro Cup winners cup when they came back from 1-2 down to win 3-2 against Bayern Munich (I think) with Trevor Steven scoring their winner. That was probably the noisiest crowd I've ever been in as Andy Gray battered the Germans into submission.
