Just finished reading the book which is a great insight into the good, bad and ugly of our great club and Lord Bob. I thoroughly enjoyed it so well done to Dave Thomas and Mike Smith.

I'm half way through. It is very well researched and you definitely get a feel for Bob Lord's personality.

How true was the story about Bob Lord giving some sausages or meat to the referee before one of our games?And then taking them back again when the referee didn't give enough decisions our way

The Jury is out on the book really as i keep wondering what we have missed as we only know half of the story and the writer said all Lord's paperwork was burnt .
My Dad worked for him for years and said he was as straight as a bottle of chips .

Doesn't sound like Bob Lord at all. It would have completely violated his own code of honesty - he may have been up in court for sourcing his meat from illegal sources during the war, but he would never have been there for trying to bribe the judge.
He was vice president of the League. He was so unpopular that when Lord Ashcroft (was that his name), the President, died or resigned through ill health, the other teams allowed Bob Lord to run the show as acting President but wouldn't officially appoint him. Why? Because although they felt they had reasons to dislkie him personally, they had great respect for his abilities as an administrator - and that includes his fairness and honesty.

mkmel… that's a Paul Fletcher story that the basket of meat was removed before full time.
But there was always a bottle of whisky in a locked cupboard in the refs room. Lord had the key and if he liked the ref he unlocked the cupboard. If the ref had a stinker the cupboard stayed locked.
Tribesmen, there were many stories that we chose not to include because there was no backup evidence.
Now the book is out people ring us up and say...did you hear about…
Suspect the paperwork he kept at home was burned because of the pending FA Inquiry. His death spared him that.

It wasn’t Lord Ashcroft but Lord Westwood and he didn’t die or resign through Ill health. What he did was beat Bob Lord comfortably when they both stood to be league president.
Bob Lord was seething. He said he’d forgotten more about football than Westwood would ever know and then said he only beat him because Lord came at the wrong end of my name.

Westwood resigned in March 1981. Bob Lord was acting president till June 1981. Westwood didn't die till 10 years later, but I don't know what he resigned for; I thought it was ill health, but presumably not.

so many stories of Lord. Dave and I had to cut out a lot of stuff as the publisher imposed a word limit. Hopefully we have provided a fair and balanced account of the man himself.

I thought Lord had stood in after Len Shipman but I do know that he was beaten hands down by Westwood in the election.

What we ended up with was 145,000words... an average footie book is 115,000 ish
We could have easily done a two volume boxed set of 100,000 each but no publisher would have gone for that.
And just supposing if they had, you'd have been paying probably £40.

I read this as soon as i got it.A brilliant book not only chronicling the football part,but also giving an insight into struggles after the war.As i said,a brilliant read.

I bought it for my Kindle yesterday and look forward to reading it when my vision settles down after my eye operation.
