The worst Burnley performance that you've witnessed live....

With the recent success, it's sometimes hard to think back to when we were shite..
One that will always stick in my mind was Sheffield United away, 3rd March 2002... I was only 9 or so but I recall it being Gascoigne's debut or first start, it was also my first away game!
Anyway it was absolutely dreadful, Gascoigne stood in the holding midfield spot, demanding the ball whilst spraying it either into: Simon Tracey's hands/stand behind the goals/stand behind the touchline.
We got beat 3-0 and it effectively dented our playoff chances, after a wonderful start to the season.
Over to you guys....

Away at Gillingham under Waddle. Blowing a gale, rain , snow you name it. Waddle spent half the game trying to hit 40 yard passes against the wind only to see the ball come back towards him. I can't even remember the scoreline....(Google would be cheating)

I think my worst away day was Watford away in the cup 2003 2-0 loss we didn't compete at all.......
Home it would be 1999 v Gillingham lost 5-0 abysmal....

Lost 1-0 to Rochdale in 1989.
They had two players sent off.
We never even looked like scoring. And it was raining and cold.

There's so many to choose from to be fair.
Blackburn on April Fools Day in 2001, back-to-back performances against Gillingham and Man City at home in 1999. Rotherham in the FA Cup at home in 1997. There's one that sticks out in my mind from 2007 - an awful goalless draw at home to Luton in 2007 - 19 games without a win.

The Luton one always sticks in my mind as well, think that was the last game of the 19 without a win. Cotterills last game as well, a 1-0 defeat on the Turf midweek was pretty dismal, might have been against Hull. Too many to mention really!

losing at home 1.0 against a 9 man Rochdale team with a goalkeeper in their team that was on our books but loaned to them was the pits

The 0.6 at home to Hereford was a low point and I seem to remember a 0.5 drubbing from Wolves around the same time.
The same season, 86/7 I think, we played Peterborough away. There was a bit of a fair at the back of the away end, with a few rides for kids. We got battered 5.0 by Posh and we were wretched. After the fifth goal went in following another calamitous keeper error, a large section of Clarets took inspiration from the fair outside and sang to Burnley's number 1, "there's a circus in the town, Joe Neenan is the clown!"
Gallows humour in very bleak days.

I was at the Rochdale 9-man defeat. But for a bit of variety, one that always bugged me was the game against them towards the end of the 90/91 season. We needed a win to have a good chance of automatic promotion and bizarrely played out a low key 0-0. Not as spectacularly bad as the 0-6 or 2-7 but in its own way a shocker.
Edit.. Having thought a bit more, the 3-0 Boxing Day defeat at Brighton was the worst ever, I don't care how old you are or how many games you've been to, that will always be the benchmark for 'not turning up'.

It’s the hope that gets ya. The away draw left us dreaming but the side we put out it was difficult to see beyond a defeat, with hindsight.

Rochdale, then next home game, Hereford.
Even though I'd started to become numb to how bad we'd become & crap performances that went with it, I've always used those awful results as my own personal nadir as a Claret.
I'm much, much happier now.

Two that spring to mind for me, not for the massive scorelines but the sheer ineptitude of the performances:
Hereford away, September(ish) about 1976/7/8 when we were 3-0 down in about the first 20 mins and
Coventry away (Highfield Rd) the first game after Stan had taken the team on a mid-season break and ditto above, were out of the game in the first half-hour and where most of the team looked like they were still pie-eyed from the week away.

There have been some bad ones over the years but if I have to pick two out.
Bristol Rovers (a), 1984/85, lost 4-0
Rochdale (h), 1986/87, lost 3-0
The home game after that Rochdale defeat was the 6-0 against Hereford but the Rochdale performance was far worse.

Losing 3-1 away to Swindon in the cup was dreadful. One of Eddie howes last games as manager. We literally couldn’t pass the ball forward and were devoid of any confidence.
Also that 3-0 loss away to Gillingham, what a long journey on a Tuesday night.

So many to choose from. The game at Crewe in 87 was about as dire as I can recall. Another away game at Leyton Orient in late 80's with David Jones making his debut for us and we lost 3-0. A few poor ones in Dyche's first season in a run of home games around this time of year. That 0-0 draw under Cotteril v Luton was also abydmal.

A 4-0 defeat at Coventry back in 2004 sticks in the mind as a particularly awful display.
Think the squad went off on a short winter break soon after which didn’t go down well at the time, from memory.

Away at York, Boxing day 84 got beat 4 nil. It was my first away game so that's probably why I remember it well. Also remember getting hammered 4 nil at Chester, think Rimmer scored a hat trick. The away defeats seem more imprinted on the memory. I only started watching us in 1983 so them dark days were probably more bearable for a starry eyed youngster, having not experienced past glorys I'd nothing to contrast it too. I know it was bad in the mid 80's, but it must have been even harder to stomach if you'd seen us in our halcyon days.

The above Coventry game was unforgettable for the wrong reasons and yes they been warm weather training in Spain the week before. Rumour was that training consisted of a run on the beach in the morning followed by an all day session. Took wrong coat, was freezing, left early but the driver took a wrong turning back towards the ground and got stuck in the crowd coming out.
Other notable ones.
Wigan away under Waddle 5-1 . Shackleton was in the directors box, left early and our eyes met. Told him that he could eff off.
PNE away in the SVT 6-1. Massive expectant away following with 1000s locked out of the away end. We were last in and got escorted round the pitch to their end. We were 2-0 down by this and point and even those in wheelchairs were abusing us. They put us in a small pen with PNE to the left, right and behind

. We'd had enough when Chris Pierce took a short free kick to either Deakin to Bray at left back, they weren't looking so it went out for their thrown in.
Rotherham at home under Stan 2-6
Bolton away under Laws.
Bolton away under Mullen.

Being an exile most of the games I see live have been at the lower league grounds in the dark years. Gillingham is a home game and there have been a few dire ones there but another game that springs to mind is away at Southend during the Cotterball 19 game run when we scraped a very boring nil nil and if memory is right we didn’t have a shot on target. Mind you we also had a stunning win at Southend to clinch promotion too !!

The above mentioned Chester loss was pretty grim as I live in Chester but the one that disappointed me the most was our away loss to Grimsby (2002) when we were 3-0 down after about 15 minutes. I think Gazza was on the pitch (He did Sweet FA) but I came away thoroughly teed off

That York game on Boxing Day was the first time I was forcibly removed from a football ground by HM Constabulary.
Chester and the end of Martin Buchan was dreadful. Many of my choices are already covered but I will throw in Grimsby away in 2002 with Gascoigne ****** on the pitch and Ipswich away where we conceded 5 first goals in just over 20 minutes.

You weren't in fancy dress at York were you? There was a mini pitch invasion with yetis, gorillas and all sorts! It was surreal watching the police grappling with them. I'd forgotten about that, nice one!

It was 2-1 as my all time favourite Claret scored a belter........Tony Morley.
I was also at PNE when Ronnie Jepson scored 3 in a 6-1 demolition of a feeble Burnley performance. Unless my memory escapes me I think the left back Bray scored for us.
