My understanding is that this is not the case. One of the purposes of the 'free agent before the end of the transfer window' rule is to prevent clubs and players agreeing to end contracts early by mutual consent in order to manufacture free agency after the window has shut to allow a player to move to a club that is still, for example, in contention for a trophy / promotion / European place.

e.g. This prevents Jeff Hendrick agreeing to leave Burnley now ahead of the summer to go sign for Leeds tomorrow to help with their promotion push in the final 10 games of this season.

It may be that this is not the same with other leagues - but that's not what I was led to believe.

Daniel Sturridge won't be signing for anyone just yet. He's just been handed a worldwide ban until June and fined £150,000 having been found guilty of breaching the FA's gambling regulations.

Initially suspended for two weeks and fined £75,000 by an independent commission for providing his brother with inside info on a transfer to Sevilla. The FA considered it too lenient, lodged an appeal and the appeal board found that the initial commission had misapplied the FA rules which has seen them find proven two other charges which had previously been dismissed.
