Has anybody else spotted that this week (2nd- 8th March) is British Pie Week, and, If so, are you participating?
I've always been a pastry lover but more or less cut out pies (and cakes/biscuits) from my regular intake after passing 60 (10 years ago) - for health reasons now my metabolism has slowed down significantly.
I'm in pretty decent shape post- Christmas now though & decided to indulge in a few pies this week to observe this event.

Kicked off with a Waitrose minced steak & onion + tinned mushy peas on Tuesday, followed up yesterday with a Holland's potato & meat pie (bought frozen from Morrisons) + home made mushy peas (now Ive had time to make some).
I've still got a lot of the mushy peas left so I'm up for a couple more pies before the week is out. Any recommendations? (available from major stores nationally as I dont live in Lancs). I should try a vegetarian pie at least.

Had a pie few weeks ago on way to match , some scruffy old tattered butchers near the old Keirby but a cracking pie ,though the shop name escapes me

I always like the pies on 'Baker Street ' in Morrisons. They do a really nice pastry.
Anyone in the Darlo area will tell you that Taylor's, the local butchers do great pies especially the Pork Pie.
Had a trip to the Lakes a few years back, and went to Grange over Sands, just because we'd never been. The place was dead apart from the queue outside the butchers. Best pies I've ever had, but I can't recall the name of said Butchers.

Mmmmm...Had not heard of these till yesterday when I bought one on Bury market. Very good. Didn't realise they were made in Haslingdon but will buy again, although Haffners are also very good, especially when bought fresh from the bakery

No, not done yet Tim (It's ages since I may pea&ham soup/broth; can you still get ham shanks even?). Wonder if S&K suet pudding counts as a pie, years since I had one of those & go very nicely with mushy peas ?

They eat Pukka pies down here in Notts. Their steak pies are ok but cannot be described as a 'one hand eat'.

I always take a Pork pie to the Turf. Beeches pies from Barrowford are excellent.
I usually save it for the 2nd half and started noticing that we quite often score while I'm eating it. It's become a point of conversation around me. I know that there are some wierd superstitions in football and this is now mine.
Last game we scored 2 when I was eating it!

They eat Pukka pies down here in Notts

I lived in Leicester in 1975-1977 and first came across Pukka pies in the chippies there. It was (maybe still is) a family run business based just north of that city. Pukka pies are everywhere now though - they seem to be stocked in all the supermarket chains.
They've done a fair bit of sport sponsorship over the years to get brand awareness - especially around footy. Thankfully they dont use Gary Lineker in the ads though.
Might try one of theirs later today "for old times' sake".

Always came back with a freezer bag full of Hollands puddings. Then we could get them at Iceland, in Ireland, but they mustn’t have had the required uptake as they’ve disappeared from the shelves again. Bugger!! I do like two little babbies heads covered in mushy peas.

Skipton has a number of decent pie shops, Farmhouse Fayre are also very good.
Keelham Farm Shop up the road on the edge of town are promoting Pie Week. Today their Veggie butcher suggests cheese and onion. Veggie butcher? In my day they were called greengrocers.

I've come across Pieminster at a few events in the last couple of years (cricket maybe?), got to say I enjoyed the one I had. When I did a tour of supermarkets walking into town the other day, I noticed a few of theirs too (maybe Sainsbury or Waitrose). I'm off into town later this aft on other business and I'll maybe get one of theirs for my stash (still a few days of British Pie Week remaining & my mushy peas to use up).

The butchers near the Keirby is Haffner's - excellent pies but it is very definitely not scruffy, old or tattered.

First time I came across Pukka pies was on Rotherhams old ground, Millmoor. Very good they were.

Unlike some of our performances there back in the day.

D.T Laws in Rossendale - Steak Pie, the most densely packed Steak Pie I have ever encountered, great flavour.

Grange over Sands, wow. I used to go parachuting there. Often spent the weekend in a local pub that sold Hartley's Beer. (To die for.) Sadly, Hartley's was later taken over by Robinson's Ltd.

Lots of pies from butchers on here that are superb.

But if you're after one from the supermarket frozen section then Aldi's Chicken, Ham Hock and Leek pies are very nice indeed.
Rich and creamy with puff pastry.

From the outside it looked like something from the early 60’s that hasn’t been touched and an old red letter sign like an old Rumbelows sign .Though was fine inside and busy too . I’m sure I saw a breakfast pie too but could be mistaken .

being a baker by trade and obviously have the knowledge of a good quality pie.start by going to ark caterers near Queensgate bus depot as a starting point then stanworths in skipton and further afield by far the best with the range and quality is higginsons butchers in grange over sands for anyone up near Morecambe bay.The others mentioned in this thread people must be easily pleased.

get out of burnley and you will understand my recommendations and you will never go to haffners again but you may be dominated by price that's why you like haffners.

I'm sure most would agree that if the above is true, you should take a " family " size pie on Saturday and stuff your face !

Mrs Clarets4me's Cheese and Onion pie is the finest I've ever tasted, and if you're ever eating out over Ribble Valley way, the Steak puddings at the " Higher Buck " in Waddington, are fabulous. These two delicacies are responsible, at least in part, for my current waistline !!

To me that started when pubs thought they could serve you a ceramic dish filled with some kind of lumpy molten liquid with a misshaped piece of puff pastry wedged in on top. And then point you to the dictionary definition of 'pie'.
