It's a sign of how little we can trust the government that they've done it without without telling anybody. Shocking.

I've caught a few trying to buy false ID tonight.

The 65yr old ID is more valuable than an 18yr old passport for school kids now.

When its implemented Id add anyone over 60 who has retired and/or isn't working. Keep the old buggers indoors whilst the rest of us sort this mess out

They wouldn't be cancelled as such, but the mourners might not be able to attend in person.

Or they'll be low key events with close family only, many people are having to adjust their plans,it's unfortunate for those affected, but it can't be helped.

I've heard the Health Sec. (Hancock is his name, I think) mention this
but can't recall him saying as from next week but sometime in the not too distant future.
When the experts have deemed it necessary or right.
Whatever they will not be able to enforce this.

The line seems to be self isolate if you're 70 or over; don't get in touch with
your surgery or doctor; use NHS111 online and only seek help if you're really ill
or at death's door. And even then one suspects you'll have difficulty in getting in touch
and the health services will have difficulty in helping you or getting you into hospital.

I think they should issue all those who are 70 or over with a pill
that they can take when they reach the point of no return.

Self isolate and be prepared for the long haul (i.e. months and months)
and/or possible death seems to be the message.

Re-assuring isn't it?

I suppose it's "fairer" if everyone is asked or told to stay at home. On the other hand, there is surely a certain logic in trying to make sure that those who won't be badly affected are the ones who catch it.

There are two reasons why they want older folk to stop at home. Both reasons are because they don't want older people to get the virus, but there are two separate reasons why that's important.

1. To stop them dying.
2. To stop them filling hospital beds.

If it was only for reason 1, that would be something they could make their own mind up. But with reason 2, there will certainly be a big strain on hospital and hospital staff, and so they want the high risk people to be out of the way.

As I mentioned on another thread, the over 70s going into isolation will have a wider impact.

Those that work who rely on the grandparents to do the school runs or look after the kids whilst they are at work will then also need to take time off

As someone who is over 70 I have taken sensible precautions since this virus was first highlighted, which is far more than our government have done. When the virus potential was highlighted in both China & Italy why did the government not take sensible action to quarantine anyone arriving from those two countries. Any aircraft should have been made to land away from the major airports, ships arriving could similarly have been diverted to facilities where quarantine could have been enforced and traffic using the channel tunnel quarantined in a remote area of Kent. Most probably because they did not want to find funding for such an operation was this not considered. As for the NHS being unable to cope with a pandemic is that any wonder to anyone as the government in recent years as totally underfunded the NHS. I do not belong to any political party nor do I wish to be, but it appears to me that our government is woefully lacking in their preparations to deal with this virus and the prime minister has been contradictory in his statements.

They're also going to rebrand the Think 25 age scheme.

Think 55 will be the new one.
If you think someone looks over 55, check their ID.
If one escapes call the police..

I agree.
I recently turned 70 but not at all fragile and can pass for 60s rather than 70+, live alone and have nobody depending on me. If I was being selfish, I'd still go out most days as usual - Ive had a full life and if I get it, Ill either live or die "with my boots on".
On the other hand, I'm aware NHS etc resources are scarce and it'd be wrong to take unnecessary selfish risks. I'm already altering my habits and will go further IF such advice (months of isolation) comes.
Worst thing for me is/would be missing sport and live music (still no large scale cancellations for small gigs I go to). Still, lots of books to be read, dvds to watch and Xwords to do I suppose

The drinks cabinet.

To be fair, I don't think we're far off this measure. The government approach seems to be to float something, say it's a bit further out, then bring it in a bit quicker. Gets everybody softened up, people are then also a bit relieved the government is more on top of it than they'd thought because they react a bit quicker (apart from the "nothing wrong" / "we're all going to die" extremists who you'll never please).

But nobody's said it. Yet (see time stamp).

We don't really need posts like this that will make over 70's even more concerned than they already are.
Even if it is brought in, they can go out for walks etc. They will just be asked to avoid shops and not to get too close to others.

Not fixed yet but it might be. Its another prime example of how dumb politicians are. To me they are failed private enterprise workers. Unemploysble elsewhere.

Many older people work voluntarily for charities and at food banks. Presumably then these wonderfully valued services would stop. Unless of course some half brained politicians run them

In a conversation which included five elderly relatives (all over 85) yesterday, the comment was made that the fatality rate for the over seventies was perhaps 20%, to which one uncle suggested that: "this Corona Virus might be worth having, as five to one that I survive until next year sounds better than my usual expectation"
