Not all that clear there boris.
Just had the call that my work is now shut.
Bit surprised yet missus works for a larger engineering firm and is still expected to go in in the morning.
Could do with confirming if or not "non essential " work places should close for the initial 3 weeks.
How did others interpret it please?

On a serious note good luck those in construction and other jobs deemed as self employed. I hope the govt sorts out that situation sharpish as clear direction supported by employers and funded by the govt will be key to making this lockdown of sorts work as it needs to

Self employed workers need to know whether they'll be protected financially if they heed these instructions,if there's no clarification then you can hardly blame them if they feel the need to carry on working,as ever the devil's in the detail.

How do you define non-essential? We make steel lockers, a huge customer of ours is the Nhs, who unsurprisingly, are ordering a lot of lockers right now. The supply chain for essential services, including things that might not be obviously essential but without which, the service can’t function, has to carry on.

Agree and people being put under pressure by bosses to come in or will be sacked and not employed when things are back to normal.
Support for all self employed and forced shut down of certain work places like building sites and factories needs to happen quick

Why not "if you are not a key worker, stay at home" That wasn't what was said. And who decides what is essential? Is there a list?

It was basically "go to work" if you are working. So I guess, if your business is open, you keep going until told otherwise?
There will be more measures in place soon I reckon.

One thing that wasn't clear to me was about Sandwich shops/Takeaways etc ...
I know that Subway, Greggs and McDonalds have taken the decision to shut, but what about smaller chains and owner run places ? Also the pubs etc that have been offering collection services ... you could interpret the phrase, " Food retailers " to include these, or perhaps not ...

It would seem they give us the soft version one day then the day after enforce it hard so looking at what bumble Boris said tonight (which was a tad vague to say the least), I'm expecting letters and passes needed to leave the house by Friday

I was wondering about local takeaways too. They sell food which is essential, but they aren't essential themselves.

Not these I shouldn't think although the Chancellor's speech last week was peppered with "We will get through this", about six or seven times, I think. Lots of "unprecedented"s too.
Perhaps he was hiding behind a lectern..

I know it's a serious situation and I am being flippant, but.. as long as 80% of my wage is paid and as long as my employer can apply for an interest free loan so I have a job to go back to, bring it on ! I haven't had longer than a week off for 10 years.

Are the large unessential businesses in the area doing their bit by shutting down? Of course not.

Thought it was pretty clear, a bit like the instructions that said to avoid close contact- just seems that a part of the population decides it doesn’t effect them. So now we all need to suffer.
If your work is open and you can’t work from home then you need to go in. Feels like there a lot of people feeling entitled to going home, watching box sets and getting paid.

I work for a furniture manufacturer. Fairly non-essential.

Normally, yes, but he's unelected and about to become a scapegoat, so he's no longer an essential worker.

His speech was written by some very clever people. By not saying “only key workers are to go to work” he has left it in the hands of business owners to make the call.
What I heard was “go to work if the work you do can’t be done at home”. The use of “absolutely necessary” has added the confusion. Clarification required.... but they knew this when they wrote it.
If he meant only key workers go to work for the next three weeks, he would’ve said that....but he didn’t.

Why are builders and other self employed any different from hospitality/entertainment self employed? Theyve already been laid off.

Lots of people verifying including blue tick serious and reliable accounts
