They should sacrifice what may amount to be a significant portion of their career earnings? Just like you would in a similar position....

I keep hearing Burnley focus heavily on bonus schemes, which the players have automatically had deferred anyway. Players don’t play on forever, even though they are rich already we should pay them for as long as we can afford to. To do anything else would be wrong, and wouldn’t help next time we want to extend somebody’s contract!

Once the sponcers etc start withdrawing their payments, our clubs financial position will change dramatically.

The players will then have to step up to the mark to help the club

Our starting position is so much stronger than many other clubs but in these extraordinary times asking players who earn over £1m/year to forego a portion of that is not unacceptable.

Football should be no different to any other industry...

Trouble is, it's VERY different to any other industry. I'm afraid it will never be normal.

Burnley FC is a very wealthy company, why should its employees sacrifice their earnings to help a company that doesn't need help?

Maybe all big money players (premier/EfL should all be put on Nurses wages for three months.Im sure they would cope.

I am retired, and my pension pot has reduced considerably, so in a roundabout way my earnings have reduced.
So the answer is yes.

You could argue that for anybody who earns big money. Surely the answer instead is not only to clap for nurses etc but pay the poor sods more ?

Not at this moment in time it isn't. That would be incredibly irresponsible...at least until the **** storm has passed and we are trying (successfully) to rebuild the economy. Pay them right is absolutely the right thing to do, but at the right time.

Mmmmm, I suspect the heroes will find themselves at the bottom of the pecking order yet again. I think we'll find there's never going to be "the right time".

Not wanting to sidetrack to post, but the bbc article says it'll save the club around €90m.

Now I'm not sure how may players they have but that's an obscene amount of money for just 4 months of the year.

Not so sure about this.
Of course the economy is going to be impacted for decades and we need to rebuild etc. But they’ll be forgotten then in the context of the financial pain we will all have to feel.

Teachers are currently being offered significant hourly rate increases to go in and “teach” the kids of key workers. They are hardly putting themselves on the front line compared to others. Even as a temporary measure for the next few months it would seem rewarding nurses and emergency services etc with an increase in their hourly rates would seem the least we can do. When this comes to an end we can then see where we are with the economy etc.
I would fund this with a temporary increase in income tax rates to cover the same period we increase NHS staff etc wages - say initially till the end of this year and an increase of between 5% and 10% on income tax rates over £40k salary pa.

My point being that you haven’t willingly donated some of your pension to help the crisis have you? Why should Burnley players willingly sacrifice their wage, without being asked, in order to help a very wealthy business?

Ordinary teachers are not being paid extra for going in but I'm not sure whether they are ot not has anything to do with NHS pay.
But, yes,arguably, any public sector-workers classed as key workers keeping the country running- ie heroes - would hope for some recognition in the future but, in reality, they'll be forgotten.

I know at least one local authority who offering teachers a significant increase to “volunteer” to go in and teach.
The point was really more about that in this sector some people are deciding that this now rather than wait for the inevitable economic fallout.
