Although I didn't ask for any, my daughter decided to post two small parcels to me containing masks, - neither arrived so I can only assume they have been stolen en route by our wonderful Post Office.

Well documented that Masks serve no purpose in the current climate....but suddenly most governments want them now...and people opting to wear them.bizzarre.......

I think there's limited evidence that shows they help in preventing passing it on if you have the virus. Otherwise we're told they don't help protection.

If you stay well away from someone they don’t help. But at work I have to wear a surgical face mask when with a patient with covid 19 as a minimum. I have to wear a FFP3 mask if I’m doing any procedures which like to cause anything airborne, so they must have some benefit.
If nothing else they stop you touching your face as much which isn’t a bad thing

Taiwan would disagree, they were made compulsory as soon as the outbreak happened. They had stock for all the population.
The cynic in me says we are being told they don’t work so the NHS have some.
Also if they don’t work , why is it SO important NHS staff need them, because it protects them ,that’s why.
So yes they work, but no pint telling uk people they do because there are none available.

I take my grandson to work as a cook in an old folks home....we have our own space to a degree at home. So a video the other day and a couple in a supermarket they had plastic bags entirely over their heads looked stupid but I suppose they are a lot better than a flimsy mask

I don’t know you’re age or the age of your grandson but if he’s young and you are over 50 I probably wouldn’t advise seeing him at all until this has blown over.
It is not fully understood but it’s becoming increasingly clear that the younger you are the more chance you have of being an asymptomatic carrier. Taking him to a old folks home could be irresponsible, however I don’t know the circumstances

I have bought a mask but haven't used it yet. The main reason for me to wear one would be to stop myself directly touching my mouth or nose subconsciously.

He only comes into "contact"with one other. Kitchen based.ive no health issues we keep a distance in house. My dads 72, my mum lives in Portugal. My wives mum and dad, who normally look after our kids a couple of days a week are in their 60s and fit and well
We won’t be seeing them for some time.
I would feel awful if I or my kids passed on the virus to them. They may be fine but they might not be. Not a risk I am taking but I know personal circumstances can make this impossible for some some. I see too many sick people and it’s probably warped my thinking

They work, but only if you use them properly.
They need to fit properly, they need to be of the correct grade, they need to be disposed of properly, etc
On top of that you're also vulnerable through your eyes (hence doctors, nurses, etc wearing eye protection).
Plus you'd get bellends thinking they could ignore social distancing, etc because they're wearing a mask.

I believe decent masks (filtered) may prevent you from infecting others. Disposable ones only work for a few hours, apparently

Firstly most of these people wearing them are crap bought off Ebay, not medical grade . Secondly they're not fit tested. Thirdly I doubt these people change them frequently like they're supposed to. Fourthly, people not used to wearing them will find themselves touching them thus infecting the mask anyway. The people in Asian countries have always worn them if they have a cold etc. The idiots you see walking round with them here think they're fully protected from the virus.

You think masks should be fit tested? That’s more than the NHS currently thinks.
Not the WHO or HSE, they also think masks should be fit tested

I don't know why some on here are calling them idiots. If someone is wearing a mask, even an ill fitting cheap one, the chances are that any aerosol, coming from a cough or sneeze, won't travel as far as someone who coughs and isn't wearing one.

From what I've been reading from reliable sources, a cheap or home made mask is of minimal protection, but possibly better than nothing. However the attached video explain quite clearly the best way to avoid this nasty virus.

As you work in the NHS you know that they are supposed to be fit tested. But as we know what is supposed to happen and what really happens are 2 different things.
