Why do people killing animals bring out the worst of mentalists?

Do you show such rage every time you read about a murder? I'll bet you don't.

That's the mentality of some unfortunately. "Go out for my hour exercise.....kill a swan"

Looks like they've got a 30 year old for it

Why does caring about defenceless birds and animals have to be to the exclusion of
human beings ?

More to the point, why does it enrage people sufficiently to criticise those who express concern,
and indeed anger, at such atrocious behaviour ?

By the way, your choice of the word "mentalists" does you no favours and indicates your lack of
empathy.

Killing a swan, despicable as it is, is not murder.

How do you feel about folk who swat flies? Or wash their hands? - after all a virus is a living creature too.

I’m being flippant, of course, but the point I’m making is that there has to be a heirarchy of what is the least acceptable thing to kill, with people being at the top, a long way above swans or anything else.

mentalist1
/ˈmɛnt(ə)lɪst/
noun
1.
a magician who performs feats that apparently demonstrate extraordinary mental powers, such as mind-reading.

With the second part of your comment you are surely referring to yourself. ;)

I don't object to killing a swan per se. After all, someone killed a chicken on my behalf for Sunday dinner. But the swan didn't belong to the killer and, I dare say, it wasn't killed humanely (though it would eventually have died an inhumane death anyway, almost certainly).

Horrible.

They pair up for life and this is the time of year they have signets. It'll, potentially, devastate the family unit.

There's some sick people .

So if you were taking a walk along the canal and you saw someone dragging a Swan out of the water and cutting its head of with a knife you wouldn't think anything wrong with that?

I’m not for a minute condoning what the guy has done(how strange it is that I have to preface what I’m about to say with this), but I think that locking the bloke up “in the Tower”, at “Her Majesty’s Pleasure” is a bit mental.

Technically, the Queen owns all swans living in open water in England and Wales, although the prerogative is only exercised on certain sections of the River Thames. Killing a swan was made illegal in the 1980's ....

Why anyone would choose to do this is beyond me !

Whilst we still have people shooting rabbits, pheasant, grouse, deer etc for fun.

What he did was illegal, (twisted imo) and he deserves punishing with a fine. I must admit, I’d always thought the Swans belonging to the Queen was a myth and that it was only the ones on the Thames that belonged to the Monarchy. Bizarre one

Think I must have had my wires crossed over the years.

The one on the canal near me is a right nasty bugger, it comes straight for me as it see’s me running down the canal path. If I take the kids to feed them he will take the bread out of my hand and acts all friendly but if I’m on my own he chews my trainers or welly’s

Actually, if you are a fellow of St John's, Cambridge, you are allowed to kill and eat a swan at a high table dinner. Swan traps were originally built into the walls of the College on the banks of the River Cam, but have not been used for over 200 years. The last time a Swan was actually served at a dinner was 1896, so I think we can probably say that they've got out of the habit ....

As the article says, it was regarded as treason until repealed in 1998.

Wild unmarked mute swans belong to the Crown. As such this means that taking or killing a swan could amount to theft and injuring them could amount to criminal damage (both these offences committed against swans have been successfully prosecuted in recent years).

If you see an injured swan then contact the RSPCA. Do not approach as swans can attack and you may injure yourself or further distress/injure the bird.

Pubs called " the swan with 2 necks "or " the swan with 2 NICKS. " Is a reference to the way they were marked in order to help identify them and assess their population.

I think I'm right in saying that there was two groups classed as owners, many moons ago.

One group made a single nick in the birds beak , the other made two nicks. Hence, "The Swan With Two Nicks or Necks".

I suspect the young man who ran into Mrs Clarets4me when attempting to bully our 8 year old son in the local park 25 years ago, will willingly attest to that fact !!

I have absolutely no idea how you could think what I wrote meant what you have written. Maybe I didn't express myself clearly. When I said

"I don't object to killing a swan per se. After all, someone killed a chicken on my behalf for Sunday dinner. But the swan didn't belong to the killer and, I dare say, it wasn't killed humanely (though it would eventually have died an inhumane death anyway, almost certainly)."

I didn't actually mean that I was approving of killing other peoples' animals inhumanely. I was trying to say that I thought killing a canal swan was wrong and that killing it inhumanely was wrong. Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. :?

You could have used a better example than that, for a start flies causes disease's & viruses can kill people as we are currently seeing, we've got legitimate reasons to exterminate threats to our health, isn't really any heirachy as such, killings justified by wanting not needing to eat meat & threats to our health, this act against the swan had no need whatsoever apart from brutal murder, it's different to coming across most other animals where it's a possibility a dog/cat could have savaged that's the only reason it's more excused & other animals such as sheep ect, we can't really play the moral high card.

If so yes it's a nasty so and so, but the pair have moved now after trying to nest on that stretch for a few years

Seen kids throwing rocks at the female nesting on the far side infront if the factory/houses.

They've had no signets now for at least 3 years
Think theyve finally had enough and moved on, although went on yesterday and saw a Canadian Goose nesting, so fingers crossed they have some young and arent disturbed or driven away.

Are you sure you're not getting Swans and Geese mixed up. Geese are the one who hiss as you pass them. Apart from that they both are beautiful creatures who intend no harm to anyone except when they are defending their young as any of us would do.

Highly doubtful, you could accept it’s plain wrong & stop trying to justify it, it’s a nonsense argument anyway the culprits been caught & hopefully he/she gets an appropriate punishment, I don’t think the self defence argument will go down well with the judge.

I accept its wrong - I believe I called it despicable in my first post on this thread - and am not trying to justify it, or suggest the culprit shouldn’t be punished appropriately.

Go on then I’ll bite, if it’s not murder how would you describe the swans death? I’ve encountered swans & geese before & I’ve never felt the need to get into confrontation with them let alone an action that results in a swan dying, I’d run seriously before the drastic action of needing to take a swan on.

There’s loads of Canadian Goose that nest near Magnesium way usually, or there was when I used to run on there. Opposite side in a field, used to be about a hundred of them

They're usually placid unless the female is on the nest or they have cygnets with them. In either case, beware! But that's still no justification to kill them.
