Shaun Goater .... record v Burnley !

As literally, " I have got too much time on my hands ", I was wondering if our collective memory that " Goater always scored against us " was actually true ...

He scored his debut goal for Rotherham ( v Brentford ) in 1990, but I can only determine that he didn't score in his first two games against us in 1991-92. I cannot find the Rotherham scorers for the 6 games we played against them in 1992-93, 1993-94, or 1995/96, ( although two of them were 0-0 draws ).

He moved to Bristol City in 1996, scored two against us in a 3-2 City win and one in a 2-1 in 1996-97. In 1997-98, he didn't play in the first game, and had been transferred to Manchester City by the time of the return fixture.

In 1998-99, he scored once in a 2-2 draw at Maine Road, and got 3 in the infamous 0-6 reverse at Turf Moor the following March. He got another hat-trick in the 2-4 home defeat to City in August 2001 ( live on ITV Digital ), but didn't score in the 5-1 win over us at Maine Road in December. He played once more against us for Reading in 2003-04, but failed to score.

So, whilst at Bristol City, Man City & Reading, he scored 10 goals in his last 7 games against Burnley .... I wonder if anyone can shed any light as to whether he also netted any for Rotherham ?

I was only a kid, but I'm pretty sure he bagged a few playing for Rotherham against us as well.

according to my Rothmans year books
he played both games in 92-93 and didn't score
93-94 made 1 sub app didn't score
95-96 scored a penalty in 1st game of season didn't score in 2nd game

Thanks for that " dr dre " ... so 1 goal in 8 for Rotherham against us, makes it 11 in 16 against Burnley, ( including a 2nd Round FA Cup game in 1991 ), still not too shabby ...

Which player has scored the most goals against us?
(I don't know the answer, just interested)

I recall thinking that pesky Soleedo seemed to score against us pretty much every week!

Like you I've no idea .... so I thought I'd start at the top, with Jimmy Greaves ! Apart from an unhappy 6 months with AC Milan between June - December 1961, he played from the 1957-58 season, until the 1969-70 campaign in the same division as Burnley, with both an average Chelsea team, and later for a great Tottenham team.
Subject to correction, I reckon he scored 21 goals in 29 appearances against us in both League and FA Cup, ( 5 in 8 for Chelsea, 16 in 21 for Spurs ). He didn't play against Burnley in his final League season at West Ham.

They may be someone who's scored more ... but it's a starting point ;)

Back to Shaun Goater for a moment.

I remember reading an interview with him - probably Shoot or similar and he was asked what was his favourite away ground. No surprises that it was the Turf, 'cos he scored for everyone against us.

Frank Worthington always had a name for always scoring against us, for several different teams as well.
I don't know how true it was, or if he could match the goat, but I'm sure someone with a better memory than mine will know.

Shaun Goater was a top, top player. Always bagged against us, as did Tony Thorpe.

I'm fairly sure he only ever scored that hat-trick in the Cup replay at Turf Moor, for Sheffield United !
