" I knew that would happen " ...

Post by Clarets4me » Fri Apr 10, 2020 12:25 pm

We've all been there on occasions when we've had a foreboding that something would happen ....

I'll take you back to 6th March 1993, and the Clarets are away at the Hawthorns, who during the close season had signed our old friend, Simon Garner from t'Rovers. The Baggies did their warm up and " kicking in " where around 2,000 Clarets were situated at one end of the side stand. As many of those present proceeded to give Garner absolute pelters, my friend Ian and I looked at each other resignedly, " You know what's going to happen here, don't you ? ", I muttered. He nodded.
Sure enough, about 3 minutes in and attacking the same end, West Brom whipped in a low cross and Garner strokes the ball home, before wheeling away and running past the assembled Clarets with a huge toothless grin, and giving a " thumbs up " sign ....

I think he scored in the home game as well. We won in the end though, Steve Harper scored a belter (if it's the same game I'm thinking of).

My " Clarets Chronicles " reveals that he did, a first minute goal from Steve Harper, Mike Conroy made it 2-0 shortly after half-time ... Garner then netted on 62 minutes, but we held on to win, in front of the season's largest crowd, 14,796 . 8-)

Was that the West Brom away game where their fans had printed flyers to distribute amongst their own support to "kill Burnley".

Think that West Brom fans had been attacked in their cars heading away from the Turf at the home game.

Somehow, our lot had got hold of these flyers and they were being shown around our support at the previous away game at Rotherham, everyone turned up at the Hawthorns on a war footing.

Didn't see any trouble at all.

Garner's gurning swede will live long in the memory after he scored.

I thought we'd come back from a goal down to be honest, but time plays tricks on the memory. I'm sure Harper scored another belter in either the previous or following home game too.

There was some in the stand with the Big Jobbies. They waded in to the middle of the stand trying to take a flag down (Union Jack with Burnley on it).

They got annihilated, tits everywhere.

The West Midlands police had a confrontational reputation and for good reason BOT.

I remember the Everton team coach pulling in to the away car park.

I saw Southall and Snodin and get off. I think they had come to watch our game because they had Coventry the day after.

When he scored here, didn't he lower his shorts in front of the longside ?

Interesting topic.
Struggling at the moment to think of an instance with Burnley but while I was thinking my mind wandered to substitutions that you knew would go wrong.
Then to the 1970 World Cup when Alf Ramsay took off Bobby Charlton when we were beating the Germans 2-0 in the quarter final. The idea was to save his legs for the semi and everyone knows what happened after that. The bad feeling we had at that substitution turned into reality

On the topic of that West Brom game away wasn't there trouble in a place called Wednesbury where rival fans had 'arranged' to meet?

Not too sure that there was a 'bad feeling'. I remember watching the game at my.mates house and we both agreed that we had the game 'in the bag' at 2-0. Never write off the Germans has become a much heard phrase down the years and was still relevant 50 years ago(wow,50 years!). But some poor goalkeeping from the usually reliable Bonetti and poor defending from a side built on its ability to stop goals let us down.Mullery and Keith Newton got our goals but the substitution of Charlton, it's said, allowed Beckenbauer to play a more attacking role as he had been shadowing Charlton up till then. And wasn't Beckenbauer's arm in a kind of sling too?

As soon as it dawned on us that Stan was going to Burnley we knew he’d try and take the spine of the team too. As it turned out, he didn’t just want Lenny, Westy, Jeppo, Elvis, Swanny and Stretch - he told me for the book he also unsurprisingly wanted Dean Kiely and Chris Lucketti too.

To be fair, who among us wouldn't have done the same !

He tells quite a funny story that after retiring, Wycombe, his final club, asked him do a half-time draw around 1998. He was given a list of dates, and deliberately chose the home game against Burnley, thinking Wycombe would spot what he was up to, and ask him to pick another date. It seems that Wycombe's Commercial dept. were not well schooled in East Lancashire football rivalries, and he duly turned up as the " mystery guest ". As he strolled on at half time, and started blowing kisses to the Away end, he received his traditional welcome from those Clarets present, much to the consternation of the police and stewards, who sharply put down their half time cuppas, and came running over.
" I asked them if I could do it again next season ", said Garner, " the Commercial Manager's reply was unprintable ! " :D

Remember the West Bromwich Albion game well. Everyone was expecting David Speedie to play and we were getting ready to give him such a welcome! When Garner's name came out the reaction was ...that's worse. And yes the inevitable happened.

Lived in Brum at the time so didn't know about the planned trouble. As someone else has said the West Midlands plods did have a reputation for...shall we say heavy handedness...I remember leaving the ground thinking that they were much more interested in causing trouble that day than any football fan and I still do to this day
.

PS I was stood very close to where Garner gave his thumbs up. He was of course using the two index fingers of his right hand....by mistake of course

I think you're right silky, the bad feeling came when the Germans pulled a goal back, then became worse when they equalised.
Not sure if Beckenbauer playing in the sling was in our game or the semi final when I think Germany lost to Italy who then went on to be beaten by Brazil

I remember the semi v Italy kicked off about 11pm. Time's a beast as you get older and I'm confused now when Beckenbauer was injured. Oh well.

There were more than 2k Burnley fans behind the goal at the start of the match but the police were kicking people out left, right and centre for singing No nay never etc..

Heard the stories leading up to the game how a few coaches of loonballs had set off on Friday dinner for some trouble but all I saw was a few punch ups next to the coaches.

I had spent all week cutting paper up for confetti only for the stewards to take it off me at the turnstile.

Your reference to cutting paper up for confetti reminded me of a funny story. When we got to Wembley in '94 my brother's family all went; him, his wife and five sons. Anyway a couple of the youngest had bags of cut up paper/confetti with them but then had it confiscated inside the ground. My brother was livid and demanded it be given back. They wouldn't give way and neither would my brother so he was directed to an area close to the royal box where the confrontation continued. Eventually they said he could have the bags back at full time to which he agreed. However, he did say that he wouldn't accept anything less than the amounts of cut up paper that were in each bag. He said he had counted them.last night and knew exactly how many were in each bag. Any less returned he would construe as theft and would be taken up by the appropriate authorities. Of course we won the game, everyone was happy and he didn't bother going to collect the paper. Might have been a different story had we lost though. ;)

He definitely would have gone back to claim those bags had we lost!!!!
