Fact.

Huge fan of WWII history, WWII films, hell I even play World of Warships. I don't mean to sh1t on this film but...

Found Midway very tedious, dialogue for what little there was so incredible cheesy, it drips so heavily with patriotism my eyes rolled every other line. The characters are cardboard cut out of war film archetypes. Oh look, it's the ace pilot who doesn't play by the book and his commanders reprimand him for taking unnecessary risks, but when the times comes he will step up and his skills will save the day.
And the one guy who saw it all coming but everyone ignores, but he's not happy about it because... the humanity...

The actors do their best to pretend not to fall off the edge of a burning ship that isn't really there during overly bombastic CGI fests.

I really wanted to like the film but it was an odd choice from the outset, to make a film about a battle probably only history buffs will know about but then make it so OTT it won't be enjoyable to them. It wasn't a bad film by any means I just wish it had been played out like a thriller which is how a lot of these naval engagements played in reality, instead they went for all out action and light on character & military procedural.

Tom Hanks upcoming Battle of the Atlantic film 'Greyhound' looks a little more promising but even the trailer for that looks like it tips into comic book stuff. At least a film like 'Fury' said from the outset, this is a WWII film; based on a graphic novel.

Glad I didn't pay nearly £15 in the cinema and only a couple quid on Amazon.

The best WWII of the year is JoJo Rabbit by a country mile.

Can't think of the last decent WWII film before that, maybe Dunkirk. But that could have done with a little CGI here and there.

Might give the Russian film T-34 a look.

I know about this battle, midway between Hawaii and Japan wasn’t it? But a quick IMDB and it fails the 7/10 bar for me - usually serves me well. Combat mentions Fury which I watched last week and thought was hideous.

I re-watched Saving Private Ryan recently which was even better than I remembered it being. If you’re into WWII I would really recommend the documentary series Great Events of WWII in colour. Superb series.

Haven't seen Midway yet but will give it a go for a few quid.

Dunkirk I thought was ok but not fantastic.

Struggling to think of 'modern' WW2 films that are better than 'ok to good' though did enjoy 'Darkest Hour' with Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill

Would love to have seen the remake of 'The Dambusters' that apparently was in the pipeline a few years ago with Peter Jackson as Director but for some reason it was shelved.

Just watched it. The Americans won. Combat nailed it. Lots of cgi and perhaps a missed opportunity to tell some of real the story without the american gloss. Entertaining enough. Not on the level of Spielberg or Eastwood.

Nothing wrong with the original film. Haven’t seen this but sone remakes are dreadful and you wonder why they bother. Remakes of westerns are particularly bad. Dunkirk is a good film but watched the original the other day and I’m not sure what else the new one adds other than modern special effects. Prefer it when they think of a new angle or make a film about something that hasn’t been made before. Examples of this are The Twelth Man and The Birdcatcher.

Before you watch a film you need to realise it’s that, a FILM. I could make a film about The Beatles and it could be absolute nonsense as it isn’t a factual documentary.

How about a film where The Beatles are disillusioned with the noisy crowds and playing live. So instead of locking themselves in the studio to produce Sgt Pepper they join the So Cal Hells Angels?

Was wondering about this film as I love WW2 films but when I've seen it advertised, the computer graphics of the ships and planes looked so unreal it has put me off. Are the computer graphics as bad in the actual film as the trailer?

Midway was a big dissapointment for me. It almost seemed like a made for TV movie that gets shown on Syfy channel. The script was poor and the action scenes were unconvincing. It is too long as well or maybe it just seemed to be. 4/10

I watched a decent film last night. Extraction - with Chris Hemsworth. He is sent to rescue a kidnapped kid in India. Pretty violent fight scenes and plenty of shootouts. He is a one man army but I found it entertaining. A bit like a movie version of the Call of Duty games.

girl in South Africa who was lured into a car, taken to a secluded location and raped,
disemboweled and nearly decapitated. Horrendous, horrendous injuries that she miraculously
survived.

Takes it right through to the trial, with interviews with surgeons, lawyers, police and
the judge.

Amazing watch.
