Post two films you've seen in the last year or so than you believe everyone should watch but might possibly have missed.

-Portrait of a Lady on Fire (find some way of watching it, please!!! it's a masterpiece, and there's only about six or seven films to which I'd ever attach that label)

-Knives Out

Thanks for this. Remember seeing a trailer for this and saw the good reviews but never bothered watching as it isn’t my usual genre. It sometimes takes a recommendation to encourage my to try something different. Which brought me onto my recommendation for Call Me by Your Name which is an unremarkable story but a beautiful film.

Michael inside. Bit heavy but worth watching. Budget Irish prison film.

Marriage story. Scarlet johansen plays part of a wife who grows apart from and divorces her husband. Won’t spoil the story but worth watching as it seems a very true to life story of how divorce affects kids / the family. And the story and ending wasn’t predictable.

I rewatched Paris, Texas for the 100th time last week. Just spectacular in so many ways.

The American Friend is a great film too staring the late great Dennis Hopper.

CMBYN has been mentioned loads of times on some of the discussions I've read about Portrait, so I'll definitely be watching this.

Portrait is one of the most intense films I've ever watched because it stuck in my head for a full weekend after watching it. Hands down that has never happened to me before with any other film. I genuinely fell in love with it and felt like I'd lost someone after it ended. I'm not being hyperbolic. I don't know if you're familiar with MUBI (completely legit service, it's basically arthouse Netflix) but it's screening on there for another seven days (they keep films for 30 days - one added, one deleted every day). If you go to https://mubi.com/likestoriesofold (that's a promo link through a youtube channel I like) you can get 30 days for free.

Not seen Michael Inside. Cheers.

I thought Marriage Story was brilliant.

Thanks v much. It’s on the list and I’ll probably watch it next weekend.

I love watching films but I find that the vast majority of new releases are so disappointing. I find myself rewatching a lot of older films or foreign language films.

Hopefully there will be a lot of contributions to this thread because it’s easy to find the Oscar nominated films etc. but there must be so many that go under the radar.

Also loved Marriage Story! Another film that doesn’t sound too appealing from the synopsis, but great acting performances and a very relatable storyline makes it compelling.

Breaking my own rule by adding a third! - Uncut Gems. Proof that Adam Sandler can actually make a good film if he puts his mind to it.

Woah woah woah, this thread isn't for doing a poo on other people's recommendations. Uncut Gems is a damn good film. Got any recommendations? Everyone who would enjoy something like Parasite for instance has probably already seen it. Seen anything decent that went under the radar?

The Lighthouse....shot in black and white with a stupendously "bleak" vibe throughout it has William Dafoe and Robert Pattinson as two men manning a lighthouse on a remote islet off Scotland somewhere. As their stay is prolonged by bad weather the claustrophobia, antagonism and weirdness builds. It's not Mary Poppins that's for sure but really stayed with me after I saw it at the cinema earlier this year ..if you like it dark then, ironically, The Lighthouse is about as dark as it gets (hey, though I say it myself, that's actually quite a good line, maybe they could put it on the posters !)

La Haine - My joint favourite film with True Romance but watched it for the first time in over a decade about 6 months ago. If you love films and dont mind subtitles this is a must watch as its brilliant. If youre into mainly blockbusters, action movies and special effects this might not be for you

Deer Hunter - Id guess most people have seem this but watched it when it was on the other week and like above had not watched in donkeys. Absolute class and the best Vietnam film for me

La Haine - really good film, not watched it for a long time

The director was once described as the white Spike Lee.
He responded by saying he didn't know if it was intelligent to call him the white Spike Lee because they said to Spike Lee "you're a black Woody Allen"

Not a chance Woody Allen would have done La Haine

Hi Spiral,

Firstly, thank you for starting this thread. Your aim, I think, was simply to help people share and discover new films.

"Woah woah woah, this thread isn't for doing a poo on other people's recommendations. " Agree with you.

Cinema, like all of the arts, is inevitably subjective. Which is also part of its appeal.

Hi Claret-On-A-T-Rex: I'm not having a go. I haven't seen the film so I might agree with you but we can use other threads to discuss films i.e. say why we like or dislike them. In my humble opinion. No offence meant. We're all Clarets.

Been meaning to watch La Haine for a long while now but never got around to it for whatever reason. Vincent Cassel turned up in this season of Westworld and it reminded me to watch it. If I don't watch it now I never will.

'Rams' synopsis

A hard-drinking Icelandic farmer (Theodór Júlíusson) and his estranged brother (Sigurður Sigurjónsson) band together to save their flocks of sheep from authorities who want the animals destroyed.

See, now this is the kind of out-there stuff I was hoping for by starting this thread.

La Haine is a good un. Mesrine is a good trilogy with Vincent Cassel.

If you after stuff that is a bit different then give Slacker a watch if you haven't seen it. It was written and directed by Richard Linklater before he did his more acclaimed Dazed and Confused

I was into in my youth when I was more into US counterculture so not sure how it stands up today as it must be 20 years since ive seen it

A slow and unconventional film but was a film I used to love. Will give it a re-watch myself as well as seeing what other weird and wonderful stuff is suggested on here

Watched Kez last night for the first time in a few years.
My 22 year old son got it on dvd as I was telling him the story of the film and he wanted to see it.
It was made in 1969 and Ken Loach is such an interesting film maker.
There are some iconic bits in the film that are very funny like the football / PE teacher scene with Brian Glover and then for other scenes I am watching it thinking that the way it was done is unscripted and he’s just giving the actors a brief to work around.

Really good documentary still on iPlayer with Greg Davies revisiting some of the cast and the area it was filmed.

Knives Out had loads of subtext about class, American exceptionalism, liberal hypocrisy, and the whole campiness of it was a nice subversion, making it a very political film without it ever being overtly political or dry. I though it was a lot of fun. Portrait is an inversion of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice (not that I knew anything of that before watching) and it's directly referenced in the film. Knowing that now gives a good reason for a re-watch. It's very minimalist, almost 'cinema verite' in its style, where script is kept to a minimum and so much of the drama and meaning is conveyed through framing, performance, and allowing scenes to breathe without cuts. Very quiet, very slow paced, and it draws an utterly ridiculous amount of emotion from such little dialogue. It definitely won't be to everyone's taste, but I'd hope that any caricatures about French art-films that people might scoff at won't prevent folks from enjoying it.

36 Quai des Orfevres. Daniel Auteuil and Gerard Depardieu as bosses of different cop units going at it for a promotion. These two are brilliant together. French subtitled

The secret in their eyes. Retired cop cold casing. Argentinian subtitled, Oscar winner best foreign film.

If I can be bold and have 3? The Body. Spanish subtitled. Cop mystery, with a great twist.

I do think top foreign language films have much better storylines than the formulaic UK/USA movies

Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf.........Best acting you will ever see, beautifully shot.

A pure formality ...Depardieu and Roman Polanski..just rewatched it, a masterpiece. If you don't like sub-titles ...Blue Velvet fabulous movie.

'Amores Perros' a 2000 Mexican film which has subtitles is one of my recommendations . Don't be put off by the subtitles , you will not be disappointed . A bit gory but a story line that appeals to anyone who likes the reality of poverty and the total destruction of families that goes with it.

'The Post ' a 2017 more mainstream film starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks. Totally gripping, based on the lead up to President Nixon's demise. Not about Watergate though.

Summertime (2015) is a good french film.

DescriptionIn 1971, Carole and Delphine meet and fall in love. When Carole follows Delphine back to her family farm, the two find that lesbianism and feminism are not as accepted in the countryside.
