Ok, first off, I know some people are sick of political threads, so apologies to those people in advance, and I promise not to start any more political threads before the football kicks back off, but I thought we could have a little fun with this

I just found a test online that claims to show where abouts you sit on the political compass. It seems fairly honest with regards to the questions it asks, but I was quite surprised with my personal result... I (and probably some of you) expected my result to place me further to the right. And I expected to be closer to the bottom
I'm not saying it gives an accurate indication, but would be fun to see some of the regular political posters results.

There were some badly phrased questions there and no "neutral" option available led to me opting one way or another.

Yeah, some of the questions are poor and lack subtlety and nuance, forcing a position that you wouldn't otherwise take.

All near as could be identical to yours. A quarter square to the left and half a square further north. And like you, I expected to be further right and further south.

I agree with Rowls there are some very badly phrased questions. Anything that says "always", for example, inevitably means that if you disagree in 1 scenario out of 1,000 you have to tick "strongly disagree" just as much as the person who disagrees with all 1,000. "always" should be removed from those questions.

Ok, so atlantalad closest to Stalin so far.

I'm bang in the cross hairs with a slight smidge to the left along the line. Pretty much where i would place myself. Always maintained I am pretty centrist despite being regularly accused of being on the right and a Tory. I would say over the last few years I have drifted maybe 3 or 4 boxes in along the line from the left. Being a staunch leaver began this journey. Chances are I would see a slight drift to the right over the next few years continuing the journey. I don't think it is neccessarily the polocies of the left that will cause this but the people who populate it. It seems an alternative view is now seen as right wing and often accompanies name calling. Twitter is rife with this and i see it quite often in here as well. Many on the left seem to strongly believe they are morally superior and it is this self righteousness and the viciousness (born out of frustration i would say) that is really turning me off. I can't see a way back left for me even if naturally that is my area. The events of this week have really sharpened that.

Feels like a lot of the questions were worded in such a way as to force people down and left, and I would contend that some of the results posted above back this up. I’m less surprised by my results than some of yours, though (looking at you, Rowls)

Following timshorts suggestion above I went back and went, to my mind, extreme right wing.

So it is accuratish. My actual result was close to GodIsADeeJay. I expected to be nearer to the centre line because of my “extreme” crime & punishment views.

Thought I would be more central. I don’t think the questions lend themselves to more central views

Anyone that ends up top right needs shooting, which they will agree is a humane form of punishment

Is being political having to have a positive or negative opinion on everything?
So many 50/50 possibilities in that, plus loads where I simply don't care would surely paint a different picture.

Also, changing the question from 'for' to 'against' in consecutive questions is a ***** trick that I nearly missed.

e.g
Sex outside marriage is usually immoral.

A same sex couple in a stable, loving relationship should not be excluded from the possibility of child adoption.

Pornography, depicting consenting adults, should be legal for the adult population.


They all should have the word 'not' in the question or none of them should.


That said, it seems pretty fair.

Just to the right of centre, economically (+1.75). Strongly Social Libertarian/Anarchist (-5,13).

Lots of very simplistic questions. No questions about which football team you support, or even whether you are yourself a first (or later) generation immigrant.

Well I couldn't be more middle than this

Wife and I both just did it and got results around Gandhi.

I think the scale is a little off as I consider myself as much more middle of the road than this. It would be interesting to see the answers from anyone hitting the top right quadrant.

When I submitted my answers smoke started coming out of my laptop and I got the following error message

"error code 11a2x3: You are more woke than Lily Allen"

This is a load of rubbish. And I am proof of that.

Must admit I'm enjoying seeing (imagining) the mini panic attacks some of these results are inducing in folk for whom being right wing is a significant component in their sense of identity. (Don't get your nickers in a twist, I'm just kidding. But seriously. But joking. But not. But still joking...)

If anything it perhaps suggests that the left/right delineation in political discourse (or rather, shouting matches) is a bit of a fiction, or at the least, exaggerated by rabble rousers, meaning slight disagreement on a few small but significant policies places others at the more extreme ends of the abstract scales they imagine in their head (we all do it) as a means to conceptualise the range of political opinions on offer. Or maybe the questionnaire is just rubbish. Nobody is yet near as economically right as Thatcher, but I'm certain one or two who've posted either did or would have voted for her, and generally support Thatcherism. Weird.

Not sure how to post it but two squares up just to the left of the centre cross. Quite surprised. Some of the questions make you answer one way or the other when you might sit on the fence.

If you look a little closer its nearer Harold Shipman.

I think it would be possible to come up with a list of questions that could skew the answers in one direction or the other, but on the whole these questions were fairly standard, but might be bettered by a sliding scale from one to ten in levels of agreement.

It’s interesting that people I might have guessed were more rightwing politically and socially came out not extremely so.

During the 2015 Election there was a blind taste test poll that asked people to answer questions with party positions on those issues as the available choices, without it being obvious. The Green Party came first.

I think if we all reacted to issues with what we really believed, rather than with our flags tied to political masts, we’d find more harmony in our discussions. There would still be disagreement, but they’d be about issues, rather than party party positions.

Left wing bias! It does seem slightly skewed that way, as I came out as 3 to the left and 4.5 libertarian. I would have expected to have been at least centre or more likely one or two to the right.

Would have expected her to be closer to Friedman. Anyway, just a thought, and I will not debate it as we could probably do without a Thatcher debate.

Like a few others, I was a bit surprised to come out to the left, no surprise that I was also a bit down (2 and a half notches into LEFT and a couple into LIBERTARIAN; v similar to Duncandisorderly above)
I wouldve adjudged myself slightly to the right and a bit more into the Libertarian sector.

The interesting thing with evaluations like this is to get somebody fairly close to you to fill one in bout you and see where they put you v where you put yourself and compare.

I've been wondering when Stalin, Hitler, Thatcher, Gandhi and Milton Friedman got round to creating their political compass. I've got a feeling someone else filled it in for them. Who knows, one or two of them may have changed if they'd plotted their political compass before starting out in life.

As you said some of the questions were just too ambiguous to give a definitive answer.

That is a generic picture of the way the chart works . If you scroll down it shows you where your red spot has landed. Just in case you didn't know.

This is a bit like surveys - you don't answer the questions as you really should. We tend to display a more caring attitude in these circumstances but when it comes down to reality we may well behave differently - I usually do - I'm more selfish.
