The Ring - an interesting and clever plot which is difficult to predict. The last scene where she emerges from the well scared me sh!tless.

Have tried to watch it again on a few occasions but the first viewing left me scarred (scared) for life!

In my youth, Nightmare on Elm Street was the one that freaked everyone. Recently Paranormal Activity was a jumpfest

Possibly the ones with Jason. He gets drowned, stabbed, burned, shot, and still keeps coming back.

Or Michael Myers.

Watched Burnt Offerings as a kid and it scared the crap out of me.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burnt_Offerings_(film)

Saw it again about fifteen years ago, and it’s just a crap film with Olly Reed in it.

I watched Tremors when I was a little bit too young for it. I was at a friends house and his Dad had it on VHS. We watched the whole film, then it was time for me to go home for tea - I've never run so fast down the road in my life.

I can laugh at it now, but the fear back then was very much real!

I was discussing Parsnormal Activity with my brother a few days ago. I love the "Found footage" films like Paranormal activity, Blair Witch and Cloverfield.
Makes it much more frightening than the average scare film

One film that scared me as a kid was Stephen Kings's Pet Cemetary (think I was probably just far to young to watch it at the time)

Indeed, Pet Semetary was another one that freaked us out, saw clips of it a few months back - utter garbage effects :D

From the 70's, a film called 'Phantasm', and also one called 'Night of the Demon'.

The TV version of 'Salem's Lot' with David Soul was also quite scary

All probably pretty lame by today's standards but remember they all scared the bejeezuz out of me at the time

Another one for the Blair Witch. I remember everyone telling it was crap, overrated and nothing happens.

I think I was about 17 at the time, my mum and dad went away for a few days and I had the house to myself. Proving to be responsible for one of the nights, I had a night in to myself and I decided to rent it out from Blockbuster Video with no real expectations of it being very good... and i watched it alone in an empty house.

I slept with the light on that night.

The Birds always freaked me out. No explanation, just crows deciding to harm people for bants.

The ridiculous one was Alien. I think that just played on claustrophobia and fear of parasites to perfection.

An old school mate had a summer house style timber structure in his garden, mezzanine floor and fully decked out with electricity and sky tv. 4 or 5 of us stayed over one night and we watched this, definitely creeped us out. Pretty sure it will be lame if I watch it back.

In truth it’s a disappointing genre, the old ones are usually the best as they’re don’t rely on special effects and jumpy moments. I prefer the more psychological films like The Shining and Don’t Look Now. Can’t remember the last time I found a film scary though.

That said, I found the series The Haunting of Hill House ridiculously intense. If you haven’t seen this and want a scare then give this a watch.

Quatermass and the Pit on TV in 1958/9 scared the bejesus out of me as a 9 year old, gave me a few nightmares. For a film, at the time, The Exorcist was very scary.

This is one of my all time favourites, though I didn't think it was particularly scary, just a really well made film, sort of ominous.

Definitely a great film. Rourke is cool as in it. Got inside my head though. But like you say not scary in a conventional way.

I saw "night of the demon" when it came on TV once in the 1980's. I could remember the monster being something unreal on train tracks, but it was right up there near the top of my list as the storyline was scary - not just a load of loud noises and gore.
I had no idea what it was called, but with the Internet my daughter tracked it down for me on dvd.
You are right. It now seems very lame. Very Dennis Wheatley. But I'd still rather watch something like that than most modern rubbish.
One major drawbacks of US horror is that I usually dislike the majority of the cast and want them to just get on and die a quick death so I don't have to listen to them any more.
I was made to endure jeepers creepers round someone's house but thankfully fell asleep after about 40 minutes of boredom.

Omen 1 . For me that's not a film, it's a documentary!

I've been to Fulham many times but only in the past 10 years did I realise that you have to walk through Bishop's park to get there. The church is extremely creepy as you would expect if you're a fan of the film's!

Not sure if I'm misreading your post, apologies if I am, but the music from Carmina Burana (specifically O Fortuna) isn't in the Omen

The music is sort of similar but don't think it would be well received if you tried to play it at the Albert Hall

O Fortuna was used in Only Fools and Horses when Del announced that his child would be called Damien :o Think this ended up confusing people.

Bloody hell... you’re right! And you’ve destroyed a childhood memory for me :o

It must have been warped by Fools and Horses.

Anyway, it is true that I didn’t find the film that scary because I had sung Carmina Burana in a choir when I was 10 - just that now I know it wasn’t the same piece! :D

Everyday is a learning day :D
