That Wimbledon defeat really hurt, seem to remember their goalie, Dickie Guy?, having a great game.
Newcastle well and truly outplayed until Hibbitt slipped MacDonald in for a couple.

Fully agree with the Watford Cup defeat; our approach to the game was shocking. I'd also have thr hammering at Ewood under Stan in there.

Yet another vote for the Watford match.
We just didn't turn up on the day.
Bitterly disappointed, the best chance we'd had for Cup glory for ages.
And we must have a dreadful record against Scarborough.

Really enjoyed that.
Blackburn 5-0. Torquay play offs when we didn’t turn up and the Watford cup wasted opportunity were the three the immediately sprang to my mind.

My dad and brother were at the semi in '61. They arrived home adamant that we'd been robbed.
Never understood it myself. We let in three goals(as we did in the final 12 months later where we just never turned up), scored none and were claiming some sort of.moral victory. We had some great tussles with Spurs around that time,winning our share but the semi scoreline always tells me a different story from the one my dad trotted out.
Interesting idea to choose defeats that hurt and of course the older we are the list just gets longer. I would include the play-off 3rd game v Swindon in '68. Coming back home from the Hawthorns was yet another occasion where nothing was said during the car journey.

Palace away 1983. Last game of the season and we got relegated after just one miserable season back in the 2nd division, with a long journey home along with 12 others in a Tranny van

Another vote for Palace in 83. Was do or die and we just died. Was so hopeful after getting a good point at Leicester but we never showed up which with the talent we had in that team was inexplicable. I got thrown out for complaining against over zealous policing but managed to climb back in. Wish I hadn’t bothered

The Wimbledon defeat was the worst by far. No rationale really but I know i didnt speak for a week after it.

For some reason the League Cup defeat against Swindon at the Hawthorns was absolutely devastating for me, worse than our FA cup defeats. I really fancied our chances of getting to Wembley for a big game,

The 5-0 QF replay defeat at Sheff Wed rankles with me. We should have won at home, it didn’t help missing a pen.

I posted it on another thread recently but my dad was convinced we were robbed. Had a perfectly good goal disallowed and one of their goals didn't go in. All set up so Kelly (from Chorley) could referee a cup final in his final season. Had we got there he would not have been allowed to referee it.

Was having a think over these and the worst for me were undoubtedly Crewe in 1987 and the 1974 semi-final. They are way ahead of others in my list.
But then I'd have Watford cup game in 2003, Palace in 1983, Swindon replay in 1968. The Coventry game in 2002, which we won 1-0 but it felt like a defeat. Torquay in 1991 was abysmal and there are a few more.

Some pretty nightmarish losses there but for me the FA Cup semi at Hillsborough was the most disappointing. The atmosphere that day was unbelievable. Never heard the Geordies until about 2.55pm but once they started they made some noise. Only glad/blessing being there was no roof on the Kop.

The Newcastle semi was the worst for me but for some reason I vividly remember getting stuffed 5-0 at Oxford's old Manor ground in '96. That hurt.

I was at Wimbledon and Newcastle. I found Wimbledon more of an embarrassment, and Newcastle more frustrating. Trying to explain to Geordie fans, who weren't there, that we played them off the pitch, only to be accused of sour grapes. At 17 I hated MacDonald. I forgave him 20 odd years later when I heard him on a radio show say that Burnley had indeed played them off the park.
I also suffered the Palace away. It's such a hell of a long way to go, for such an important match, and just never show up. What a horrendous journey home.
I never got to Watford, but I can remember the astonishment at the team selection, and then anger, at the performance and the result. What a wasted opportunity.

Crewe on a Bank holiday Monday in 1987, as a few have already mentioned, has to have been the worst feeling at an away game I have ever experienced. Then there was a torturous 5 day wait before the final game during which I had to endure all sorts of people's opinions. Suffice to say, I remembered them the next time we met up.

Can't say I enjoyed the read, but well written
Surprised the Man City defeat is included - it felt like just par for the coarse at the time.
Went to the game with my eldest son and as the Lady wife was away that weekend, after the game he and I went to a restaurant we both fancied. Ate in total silence, no rage, just an acceptance we'd been totally outclassed.

Agree, really hurt and to rub salt in the wounds it took 90 minutes afterwards getting off Ayre Street multi storey.

Crewe away in 1987, was by far the worse one for me, i thought we was dead and buried after that. Glad i was too young for the Newcastle one in 74, because my late father, told me many a time that it broke him that day

The 1968 League Cup semi is glaring omission. 2 - 1 up and Bellamy went and put the ball in his own net. Then Uwe of all people killed us off. As close as we have ever got to a Wembley Final since 1962 and Swindon were in the Third Division.
My memory is that they kicked seven bells out of Burnley in the first leg.

I think depends on your age, Football seems to matter more when your younger, but for me... (forgive me if the years are wrong)
Burnley 0 - 5 Gillingham (1998/99)

Blackburn 5 - 0 Burnley (2000/01)

Must have been horrendous for that to have been your first EL derby - my first trip there ended in defeat but we did win six and draw one of my next seven visits.

Very good article, would agree with most of the games chosen.
On the night after the Wimbledon home defeat I was in the Cats Whiskers. The resident group, an awful act called ‘The Ricky Allen Set’, thought it would be funny to sing the Wombles song.
There was a near riot. The whole place was shouting and angry at the idiot. People were having to be restrained by the bouncers to stop them climbing on the stage.
The club had wheel someone out to apologise and the lead singer had to sneak out for his own safety.

Too young to remember a few of these but the Rovers 5-0 was sickening. Usually a bit ****** off after a defeat but can move on pretty quickly - not that one. Horrible.
And yeah, not sure why the City game is included. There was just a huge gulf in class and it actually brought some gallows humour as the match went on.

My dad and grandad attended the 68 replay v Swindon at the Hawthorns. I was an 8 years old and wasn't allowed to attend being a school night, never forget rising in the morning excited thinking we are on our way to Wembley, then my dad telling me the bad news.

That's true, the memories are certainly more imprinted. I'll add a couple not mentioned yet, though hardly relevant in our club's history.
1-0 defeat at Blackpool in the Cup in '90. First time I'd seen us in the Third Round, which seemed exciting and shows how s**t we were then. Got crammed into that paddock at the side, Burnley were rubbish and it all kicked off on the car park which isn't fun when you're a kid.
And that 6-1 loss at PNE in '91 in whatever that cup was called then. Spent longer getting in than watching the game.

This for me. Hard to believe it’s 37 years ago and 6 years before the tragedy in the middle pen. Was in the right hand pen myself listening to “singing the blues” all game and disliking that song ever since. Think Gary Megson played for them that night
