....... try this one out.
A farmhand is sent to the livestock market with exactly £100 and instructed to buy exactly 100 animals/birds with at least one
each of pigs, cows and hens only. The prices are as follows :-
1 cow = £10
1 pig = £1
8 hens = £1
What quantities of each animals/birds does he buy in order to spend exactly £100 and obtain
the exact requisite 100 animals/birds ?

The nearest I can get is 32 hens, 65 pigs and 3 cows. I've got 100 items, but only spent £99.

7 Cows, 21 pigs and 72 hens = 100 animals
£70 cows
£21 pigs
£ 9 hens
------
£100

Spoiler: Solution...…
a = number of lots of cows
b = number of lots of Pigs
c = Number of lots of hens
a + b + 8c = 100
10a + b + c = 100
Therefore
a + b + 8c = 10a + b + c
Cancel out the Pigs
=>
a + 8c = 10a + c
=>
7c = 9a
Therefore we know the rations of Lots of Hens to lots of Cows must be 7 to 9
7 Cows = £70 and 7 animals
9 Lots of Hens = £9 and 72 Animals
This leaves us with
21 Pigs at cost £21
Total Animals 100
Total Cost 100
(Edit: Ninja'd by John while typing out the post... honest gov!)
