Danny Ings... My Most Regretted Departure Of Recent Years

Watching him at Norwich tonight just reminded me of how good he was, battled back through injury,
still a very good player.
Whatever the circumstances of his departure, we're the poorer for his absence.

We couldnt do anything to stop him leaving could we?
He was a nice lad too. But he was always going to go to a bigger club or move to a similar sized club closer to home.
Just remember the good times and wish him every success (just not against us)

He'd be picking up a Premier League winners medal this year but for that injury.
However, it's Kieran Trippier for me.

Ings was hungry and determined, he looked so committed and that is what every fan anywhere wants. football is like that, just fleeting associations, then they're gone.

It’s funny because you could say along with Michael Keane they’ve both gone on to better things, but they’re both below us in the table. Earning a lot more money I have no doubt. But Trippier is the only player in recent seasons who has left and generally moved on to the next level.
I would love to have Ings back here though, he’s better than Southampton.

Most talented striker I've seen at Burnley. Immense with the ball at his feet, he's lost a little pace with his injuries but he's a lethal finisher. Would love to have him back.

Ings was on course to be a top quality striker, he deserved his move to Liverpool. Shame he had his injures
As for Trips, I don’t think he was appreciated at Spurs.

First saw him at the friendly at Rochdale where his talent shone like a beacon. I think he got injured after 20 minutes which was also a sign for the future. He is defo in the top 3

For some strange reason Howe played him in centre midfield that night.

Didn't we get nearly £10 million for him?
£6.5m tribunal and the rest from the when Liverpool sold him?
He won't stay at Saints if he keeps scoring like he has been, providing he stays injury free that is.

One thing I think people overlook is how hard he asked the ball pinged into him here. His first touch was so good then it made sure he had an extra second to get his head up and he was gone.
Trippier was the same. He could bring it down and have it out of his feet to deliver a cross in a flash.
Both the best of what we’ve had in modern times that’s for sure

It would have been interesting to see how he would have got on at Liverpool if he hadn’t have had that injury.
Klopp was a big fan of his he’d just scored in the derby.
Not saying he would have displaced Salah, Mane or Firminho but he would probably be ahead of Origi as the “4th”

I was more upset when Vokes left than Ings or Trippier
Maybe because it was inevitable the latter two would move on to bigger clubs.

I get that. It felt like a split that’d been coming for a while but neither of us wanted to actually do it.

That's the lot for fans of a club our size. You know your better players will always move on.
Fortunately we generally do ok at keeping them for a while rather than flogging them after a good half season.

The Danny Ings 'goals in a Claret shirt' medley is brilliant. That shows how good he was/is

Might be an age thing but it is still Dobson leaving for Everton.
Recent years it was Tripps.

He was injured in Klopps first training session I think.
I personally think he’d play instead on Firminho. But he just isn’t fit enough, Firminho has played 95% of league games for the past 9 years or so.

Me too
Though in recent times Charlie, Danny & Tripps have all left a big gap.
I'm another seeing Tripps leave as the biggest wrench.
Those crosses he used to put over....

Not sure why. Yes, we knew for a year that Ings was going because he said he was going to run down his contract. Nothing we could do about that. Tripps was the shock departure because we weren't aware of the clause in his contract, a clause that actually benefited us because he could have done what Ings had done and run down his contract. I'm told Tripps didn't want to do that.
Vokes wasn't really getting into the side at the time. I think we probably knew his time to leave was coming.
All three though did a remarkable job for us in their time here.

SD has made some good signings but we seem to have forgotten those fees and wages he has wasted and whilst Gibson stands out there are quite a few going back. Never sure how much of the fees have been clawed back but wages will have been an issue.

Not really - we have made significant profits under his tenure.
When the club (or fans) are assessing whether money has been wasted it would be unfair to look at individual examples when SD’s overall record on transfer fees / wages is that he has got a lot more right than he has wrong....as if he hadn’t we would not have generated the tens of millions of pounds of profit we have whilst he has been manager of the club.

You'd have needed a crystal ball to predict Gibson was a waste of money. The odds that both Tarks and Mee, would both still be at the club, and both suffering practically no injuries is a minor miracle. We needed quality back up, and he was that. It's just a shame, for him, that he never got his chance to show us what he was capable of. If he leaves this summer, we will still need a quality back up to replace him. Will he be a waste of money as well?

Ings absolutely hit the ground running when Charlie Austin left us at the start of the season we got promoted. His goal tally was incredible, and his partnership with Vokes. You cannot blame the club for his departure. He must be close to an England recall

I don't think we can afford to have non playing squad members on 40 grand a week anymore. Our wage bill has just got too big.

If that's true, and I'm not saying it isn't, then you can guarantee we are relegation fodder. Any team that doesn't have quality back up is doomed, because sooner or later injuries and suspensions bite you. Where would we be for this run in without JayRod and Vydra!
