How do Amazon sort deliveries.

Just wondering who sorts deliveries at Amazon and if they actually have a brain. A couple of days ago I ordered 3 packets of identical bin liners, all ordered together as 3 of the same item. First packet arrived this morning in a small cardboard box delivered by the Royal Mail. Half an hour later the second packet arrived delivered by Hermes in a cardboard box more than big enough to fit all 3 packets in. Third packet is still on it's way here with Hermes.
I'm just baffled by it.
Why send 3 identical items from one order all seperately and why has one parcel been delivered by Hermes when the other posted with it hasn't.
I've heard of keeping people in work by creativity but this is going a bit too far.

I've always been baffled by Amazon deliveries but they always seem to get here.
I'm awaiting a Royal Mail parcel delivery today but not from Amazon - it's my Burnley v Watford programme.

Hmmmm interesting.
There will be a reason. Obviously not a good one (there couldn't ever be a good reason)
But it would be interesting to know how it happened. Their organisation is normally phenomenal.

I can only go off what I've read and documentaries I've seen, but if they are led to be believed, Amazon treat their staff like **** and people who do the deliveries are paid a very low pay, when you take into account fuel.
I order quite a lot off Amazon with Prime and had parcels left outside with the person not being arsed, but overall I'd say my parcels get to me in one piece.

They do, even though the television recruitment advert makes it sound as if that's not the case, there work in massive distribution hubs setting off with a trolley & a scanner & picking all shift its target driven forcing people to go like split s**t failure to do so will result in warnings & eventually dismissal, the drivers are also target driven & if a drop isn't made it will just increase onto the workload the next day.

I feel for people who work in a factory/warehouse. The last time I did that was when I worked in Simonstone at Philips Components. It was actually decent pay for a 19-20 year old, but knackering and boring as hell.
But I only worked weekends. Some middle-aged men had to do that full time.

I was waling down from the Bobbin into Padiham a few weeks back. I saw a deliver driver stand at the back of his van and chucked the package into someones garden. This was at one of those houses where the grass banking is with the pavement at the moment. Only thing was he realised it was the wrong house

We ordered a kettle and toaster set from Amazon a few weeks ago.
Each item was in their own product box and a suitably sized Amazon box.
Unfortunately the colour of them wasn’t what we thought so had to return them.
Went online to print returns label but each item had their own so was two returns from a single order

It's actually very clever if you know how Amazon deliveries work.
Although it may seem confusing (and annoying) for us to receive 3 individual boxes, it is all fits into the bigger picture for amazon.
The staff and robots who pick and pack your items are told which box size to use by algorithms, not by playing it by eye which box suits the item better. It all starts with the size of the van, how many boxes can you fit and how does it all slot into place, like Tetris.
That minimises errors and breakages which amazon then have to replace.

Also, all goods are picked from Amazon fulfilment centres around the country. So each of your 3x items, whilst identical, may have come from 3 different warehouses due to stock levels (or lack of stock) of that item in different places.

Not been to an Amazon site but I have been to Screwfix DC in Stoke. 2 things that really struck me were how few people worked in such a large shed and the speed of order turnaround. I saw 2 human actions, 1 to remove the item from location and place it into a box on a belt, the other to pick the box from the end of a chute and load into a trailer. Box selection, make up and bar code label all done by robot, the empty box then carried to the item location by a series of conveyors.
Once the item is placed into the box and back on the belt, it was test weighed to ensure the correct item in the box. The box then stops under a printer which drops a delivery note into the box. It then goes to a robot that closes the box and seals it with hot glue then attaches a carrier label. Fires it down a chute where it is loaded. The time from customer order placement to vehicle loading? 12 minutes.
These companies invest tens of millions in equipment and IT systems to maximize efficiency in their operations . If the Amazon operation interests you, have a look on line for the Bolton DC where they have robots bringing mobile racking to pickers so they don't have to walk to pick orders. Hugely impressive.

The documentaries are all quite tendentious.
I'd happily work for Amazon, even though I've seen those documentaries. Work isn't always going to be a stroll in the park and Amazon don't struggle to recruit staff.
They also started doing public tours of their workplaces and distribution centres so they must be confident that they operate at a bare minimum within the law.

A woman who works with the missus ordered some random small item the other week and got sent a full size £950 hot tub sent. She contacted them and they said “just keep it, we’ll send you the right product out too”

Ok so here is my actual input. A multinational company that engage state of the art order processing/delivery send a customer a £950 hot tub instead of a 'small item'.
Upon contacting said multinational company and explaining that the small, insignificant item they purchased seems to have turned into a £950 hot tub....and they said...'no bother just keep it'....sorry but no......this is a chinese whispers thing and would have instantly ended up on the pages of the Daily Fail...Headline...'I ordered a cheese grater but received a hot tub!'

Wasn’t cheese grater small - but nothing of value in comparison.

So how did they grate their cheese?
Did they sit in the hot tub thinking about it?

I think Amazon will get by using their current system.
I also am slightly sceptical of the hot tub time machine story

To be fair in this economic climate that's hardly a boast with recruiting staff you can hardly pick & choose for unskilled manual labour, regarding the H&S I should imagine with HI-VIS & having appropriate ladders in the bays there'll be on the ball, it's par for the course with them type of environments & plus points do exist with you'll always be dry & probably warm with not staying still for long enough for the chill to kick in.

More likely that someone ordered a hot tub whilst ****** up during the nice sunny weather and has made up a 'they sent it by mistake' story to appease what would otherwise be a thoroughly naffed off spouse.

I was referring to pre-covid.
The country had record rates of employment.
I'm sure there are problems working at Amazon like there are everywhere. I find it difficult to imagine that they're as bad as certain sections of the press have made out.

Bought something through Amazon yesterday. Delivery for today.
Had the email confirming delivery of the item around 5.20pm. Only been out for an hour around 1pm. Not heard the door ring, nothing been left (parcel or card). Anyone any experience of this. Read this is quite common and it should show up. Always been superb in the past.

I've had a driver leave the parcel outside so I filed a complaint against the driver and asked that they aren't used to drliver to me again.
But 49 times out 50 it's delivered as it should.
Be sure to claim non-delivery of item.

Don’t some of the items come direct from manufacturer? This could lead to 2 parcels if they were short in stock but 3 parcels is odd.

Just being reading up on advice. Think I’m gonna wait 48 hours incase it arrives. Apparently the service can say delivered whilst it’s still in transit.
I did check a few times today and it didn’t say it was out for delivery until about 3pm. Hopefully it turns up tomorrow.
Thanks FF

It’s all automated & can come from any of their warehouses, their storage & picking warehouses are today’s work houses for the poor, work you to death & pay peanuts. Boris & cult’s idea of dream land.

I’ve had this before. Either in the email or in the account order history I then found a picture of where they’d left it. Try looking for the link.

They are packed in a sort of way to load a van with the most amount of items.
Thats why sometimes you get small objects with large packaging

Sounds like the driver couldn't be arsed and so signed it off.
If it were me I'd go in and report it as non'delivery. I forget the exact option to select.

As I live in a flat FF, someone may have taken it off him. The thing is delivery drivers always ring the door. Always. It doesn’t help when they don’t give you an hour slot when it’s arriving.
