Washington Redskins name change

Is it just me or is this racism movement all going a bit too far.
They say the name Redskins is racist and Fedex and other sponsors are demanding a name change which the club have agreed to consider.
IMO the name is more a mark of respect for the native people of that country. Maybe the Washington Indians would be more appropriate.
They'll be wanting the names of Blackburn and Blackpool changed next because they're racist.

I’m a Redskins fan and this has been building up over years. Daniel Snyder has always told them to do one but with the BLM campaign taking such a hold it is now looking inevitable.
I would like them to drop the Redskins and just be Washington. Fans would then use Redskins.
Cleveland Indians are in a review process currently and I can only imagine Atlanta Braves being dragged into the mess.

Maybe you should ask the local indigenous population, who have been campaigning for many, many years to get the name changed, (Long before George Floyd.) before you call it 'Respect'?

How far back do you go ? Do we change everything with a history some don’t like ? Every single country has got some history with colonisation or wars to do with race or religion. Some people wouldnt be alive today or in the countries where they are complaining but for this history. It’s s but like the Buttefly Effect. We should learn from history but not try to change it which includes renaming everything which may have some kind of offending aspect to some.

Brighton, and indeed West Brom have a real problem. Albion was the old Roman name for England and means white land.

Theres a reason why Netflix and the BBC have been removing TV shows, why institutions and businesses are renaming things and why prominent public people are being careful where they show their support for and that is because these people, companies and institutions dont want to court controversy and stick their neck out and the power of the mob is strong
Have a think about this and ask yourself why with the current backlash in opinion against BLM why certain people and businesses are rowing back from their outward public support for the movement. It might not be quite like some of you want to think in that the FA, Prem League, Sky, politicians and presenters suddenly think it was a con and not a really strong powerful movement but like with the TV Shows it is easier for them to play it safe
So you might get mad about the Washington Redskins or Little Britain whilst feeling victorious about the Prem League and Jamie Redknapp but the reality is that all these reactions come from the same place and that is one of not wanting to rock the boat and risk causing yourself harm from being associated to the 'wrong' thing
Dont complain about people with the views you dont like being able to influence things like this whilst crowing about people with the same views of you doing the same as that tends to make you either a hypocrite or somebody who is just a bit to thick to see the contradiction

It's all down to perception and opinions. My perception is that I see it as respecting the indigenous people of that country. I don't know why they would want it changed unless the term "redskins" is offensive to them. But if they are trying to also change the name of the Cleveland Indians then I guess that isn't the case.
Why wouldn't they want anything naming after them. It is not disrespectfui in any way.

Redskins don'thave much of a leg to stand on. (Apologies for being disablist!) They have an argument that "Redskins" were so called because they wore red war paint and/or make-up, but it's a bit thin. Redskins best defence has always been that the native Washington area Indians aren't the ones making the big fuss.
Of course, with the anti-slavery movement that seems to have taken off again, the name "Washington" might be the more obvious target. When he was president in Philadelphia, Philadelphia had a law saying that a slave who had been there for 6 months was automatically freed. So Washington sent his back to Virginia every 5 months for a month at home!
Cleveland Indians' problem, and I'm amazed it's never been replaced, is their logo. Chief Wahoo, I believe his name is, and it's an absolute caricature of an Indian face.
As for the word "Indians", it's no issue at all with many if not most Indians. Milwaukee Public Museum has a whole floor dedicated to Indian history, set up with full approval of the local four tribes, and the word Indian is there throughout. After all, if the choice is to be called "Indian" or "Native American", which is the better thing to be named after - a lump of land thousands of miles away where a lost European thought he had reached, or a colonist who wiped out as many of the locals as he could reach?

Why for? There was no pressure on them to donate. They did it out of respect the NAs no longer desire that respect so shouldn’t expect to be subsidised by the team. Any moneys paid to the NAs should come from federal government for stealing their country.

No it’s not PC it is entirely the correct move to make. It is just wrong and they needed to react and do the right thing. Claretandjew has it right with his comment.
I’m actually becoming quite stunned by the bandwagoning PAC push-back brigade. This current sentiment is exactly the time to right the blatant wrongs.
How this has come about is that a few days ago there was a National Public Radio (NPR) article featuring three brand experts - a current fortune 50 CMaO, a prominent Marketing and brand professor, and a brand business CEO, previously a CMO of a couple of fortune 50 tech companies. Brand is a powerful thing, and they were each asked which brand they would appeal to to change their name, and one of them immediately said Washington Redskins. The power of brand being that while there were rumblings about the name locally for a couple of years now, the exposure made them have to react.
A very good choice.
And.by the way, don’t underestimate the current and growing list of major companies boycotting FB.... this is one to watch

They've not used it for a couple of years but it should have been consigned to history a long time before it was.
Edit - still used on some merchandise sold at the ball park apparently, but not for much longer one would assume.
