Navigation - a plus and a minus for that place

2015/16 season, we stopped there going to Huddersfield. Excellent pint and the food was outstanding.
2017/18 season, we stopped there going to Huddersfield. Food was appalling and they'd no real ale.

Between those two dates it had changed hands, I sincerely hope it has again since our last visit.

Be reassured Tony. Two real ales on yesterday and both were excellent. Lots of outdoor seating too.

Sowerby is a decent afternoon / evening out.

The ‘nightclub’ at the end is a tad Phoenix Nights mind!!

The one lesson we have learned after that is never to assume a pub will be as good as the time before. We always re-research now.

Good pubs go bad and bad pubs close , simple as that

This thread reminded me of a pub I used to love - the Dog in Belthorn. Used to really enjoy going there for tea when we had a midweek game. Old fashioned village pub that did simple, but great value, home cooked food, with three or four local cask ales in the bar. Then one evening I turned up to find a load of oversized, shinny lager pumps on the bar, no hand pumps and a pool table where all the tables used to be. There was nobody in. When I went to have a look a couple of years later it’d closed down.

Guess that must’ve been 8-10 years ago, and having just googled it I see it reopened a couple of years ago as a community owned pub. Seems to get good reviews.

Anybody been?

Me and my first wife used to love the Dog Inn and went regularly about 40 years ago,used to serve lovely food and serve a nice pint,then they turned into into a carvery and it went downhill,it has some fantastic views of Blackburn from the restaurant in the rear of the pub though,I took my second wife there about 13 years ago for our first day/ night out....it wasnt very good,and was then shut for a while,then the residents of Belthorn opened it ...I never went back but I bet it's a cracking little pub again it's in a fantastic location

A part of the problem these days seems to be that many of them are effectively just managers. A proper long-standing landlord is becoming rarer and rarer.

It’s a shame - many towns and villages are losing that traditional hub of the community.

Rawtenstall is booming with micro bars,they all seem to be family affairs and just using a rented shop,amazing what you can do when you move away from the big brewery chains .....and serve a decent pint....if you haven't sampled Rawtenstall's night life recently....i recommend you give it a try....my two Favourate 's The Hop & Casked

I’ve never been to Rawstentall. Would it be worth a trip from W Yorks for a night out? Are there a few B&B’s / hotels?

I do enjoy a night out somewhere new

Tim, Rawtenstall is the new Manchester, we have 6 sets of traffic lights to get through. Not been for a pint since lockdown but you can have a great pub crawl with all the new bars. It's worth a trip over.

I had many a good time in Porkies, Bosscat, it brought me many an ‘experience’ Can’t believer that they closed it and knocked it into a pub!!

It was the only place I’ve been where you had to wade through the **** to get to the loo, only to see a pigeon nesting next to the urinals!!

Fortunately, the people I choose to spend my time with, aren't that bad. But you get a lot of them in the pubs and you just shake your head. My next door neighbour said Wood would never make it in the Premier League, so I take what he says with a pinch of salt.

Went in the potting shed at Bingley yesterday. And remembered how poor the service was and still is...taking 10 to 15 minutes just for the Drinks to arrive and the place wasnt even busy... ended up Declining food again!! Shame cos it's a real nice pub. Jumped on the Train to Leeds into a " Wetherspoons" Lord something or other. Drinks at table rapid and 3 meals served within 15 minutes of ordering I had a mixed grill for first time in years proper good.......I know Wetherspoons isn't everyones cuppa tea but they must be doing something right.
