Just looking back and in what proved to be our last season in the top flight for some years, Uwe had scored a hat trick in a 4-1 win against Middlesbrough on the Turf. Two weeks later, 45 years ago today, he went one better, scoring all four in a 4-4 draw. Two of the goals were penalties. Leighton James had missed one a week earlier and I believe these were the first two that he took for us.

Peter Noble played 301 games for us between 1973 and 1979 and scored 80 goals.

Any thoughts on him for those who can remember him?

I used to get my boots from his stall, had a cracking selection, Puma King kangaroo leather. A really nice chap.

Why was his nickname 'Uwe'?

The 4-4 was against Norwich if I remember, I think one of their lads got a hat trick as well, Ted McDougall rings a bell.

Uwe was definitely a class player, one of my favourites. Another versatile player who could play many different positions as if he was a natural.

My guess is from his hairstyle !!

Vague memories of him as a player. More familiar with stopping at his market stall in awe that it was run by an ex Claret and then having to be dragged away by my Mum cos he would stand and talk football all day long with this fan. A really great bloke.

The first Burnley striker (along with Paul Fletcher) that I remember having started going on the Turf in n the mid seventies. We didn’t live in Burnley by that time and only ever visited at weekends to see family so I rarely saw him in Burnley market as he was doing his Saturday job. But the rare occasions I did see him there were an almost religious experience, seeing one of my heroes close up. I did buy a clarets hat there from the man himself which was subsequently lost as my dad insisted we ran back to the car after THE Celtic match.

My earliest memory of Peter Noble was him being a driving force for Swindon against us in the ill-fated League Cup semi matches, breaking my heart, and then going on to be part of a side that won it by beating Arsenal with Don Rogers et al. If I remember correctly he played for Swindon for a couple of years more, winning the Anglo-Scottish cup, and then we got him.
A tremendous player for us and certainly one of my all -time Clarets heroes.

My memory is that he never really looked like one of those super brilliant footballers, but he rarely missed when he got an opportunity. A lot of his ability was in the mind, he seemed to be able to put the ball in the net without being overtaken by the nerves that most players get in that position. But it was a long time ago.

Lots of great memories of Uwe!
He was always 'there', with that uncanny knack good players have.
And once there, he rarely let us down.
He was also a lot tougher than he looked like he ought to be on the pitch.

Those were the days, when Burnley were given penalties

Uwe was my O'Neil of the 70's. He always gave 100%

I actually saw the real Uwe play in the World Cup semi in 1966 v Russia at Goodison

Yes you're right about replacing Docherty at full back. He then spent the whole season in that position. Talk about being versatile.

Lots of great comments about Peter Noble already and that's how it should be. I suppose he was what people might refer to as a ' player's player'. Under the radar and quiet but ignore him on the pitch at your peril. A relatively small man(5' 9"?) so must have had tremendous power in his legs to score so many headed goals. Interesting that someone mentioned his tough tackling but I asked Billy Rodaway(who I've got to know through him becoming related to another poster on here) who he thought was the 'hardest' players he faced. As an opponent, without hesitation, he said Joe Jordan of Leeds but in training, again without hesitation, he said Peter Noble. Apparently, Jimmy Adamson often had to take him aside and 'talk' to Uwe during five a sides etc and remind him he needed as many players as possible to select from for the next game.

Too young to see him play, old enough to remember the market stall. Always got a buzz seeing a real ex claret in the flesh passing his stall. I only remember using Cockers for sports kit though, which seems a shame now.

Imagine a modern footballer needing to run a market stall when they finish these days. Different worlds. Don’t think they could stomach the smell of fish..

Uwe was undoubtedly my favourite player out of all the Clarets I have seen play. Ralph Coates may have been had I seen more than just 2 or 3 glimpses of him play (the last time was away at Orient when he led the opposition out!).
Noble encapsulated all that was good about the game and would have been my all time hero had he not sold me a Burnley top that shrank in the wash.

I suppose to save tarnishing the memory, you could just blame your mum Claret.

Toss up between Noble, who I always saw as a machine who never stopped trying, and Billy Hamilton who always excited me when he got the ball for my top claret.

Uwe was utter class, and played for Burnley like a Burnley fan would.

I would definitely echo that! When he signed for us from Swindon I wasn’t over excited about it. However he quickly endeared himself to the Claret faithful. Great player who understood Burnley as a club and a town. A player like him in today’s game would be worth a fortune.

So many great memories of Peter Noble, the noise of the Longside singing "Uwe Uwe Uwe" was fantastic, especially after he scored a goal.

I grew up in a house opposite his.

Lovely man, always liked to see me and my mates kicking a footy about - top claret.

How excellent to have a thread where EVERYONE agrees about the subject matter.

Lots of subjects divide opinions to such an extent they can divide families, And although football can be a very emotive subject, I don’t think it actually goes THAT far, but having everyone agreeing on a football matter is extremely rare.... great to see the respect my favourite claret is getting here.

I spotted that it was 45 years today since that 4-4 draw v Norwich and had an idea in my head that I’d post about a player, see what the reaction is and then write something about him if it was positive. Not as though I was expecting anything negative about him. I reckon he must have been a joy to have in a team you were playing for.

For a man of his height, I was amazed how high he could jump to win headers, often scoring off them, not unlike Paul Fletcher.
I used to speak to Pete at least once/twice a week over a tea time pint and the greeting was always " alright son". I asked why he kept calling me that, when he knew my name. He replied " I call everybody that, as it's easier than trying to remember their names".

He had a very high pain threshold and when he broke his nose, he told Jimmy Holland just straighten it and give me some some tissue, when Jimmy wanted him to come off. The next time he broke it during game,he sraightened it himself and carrried on playing.
His weight had never altered from his playing days, despite his love of sweet things, especially chocolate. He tried to put weight on, but couldn't.

Best footballer to play for Burnley in the last 50 years. I remember the consecutive hat-tricks, but how many could do that and play full-back as well?

And wasn't he the only player we bought in the summer after promotion? Imagine what this board would have been like then.

Could tackle, head, read the game, score, pass, and go past a man. Combine that with 100 percent effort from him. What a player.

Had to like this as this match was truly memorable. Uwe hattrick and Malcolm Macdonald substituted in the second half with t' Turf Moor crowd giving him some real stick. We could generate some atmosphere under the lights.

One of the best players ever to wear a Burnley shirt.he would be my first name down on my pick of the best Burnley team ever.

I always thought use was a remarkable player. Tough but not dirty skillful but not Showy and with a real eye for goal. He was like a combination of Ashley Barnes Martin Dobson and john deary!!

They were the first two penalties that Uwe took for us, the first two of 18, I think, that he converted for Burnley.

He held the distinction of never missing a penalty in his entire professional career, but the remarkable thing was he only ever took them for Burnley.

Some totally justified praise already on this thread for one of the most popular players to pull on the Claret shirt in many decades. A superb player and a top gentleman.

Now just talking without looking anything up but i think he scored 23 of 24 pens taken something like that . I used to say everytime he took a penalty that he would miss this one , boy was i i wrong .

He did fail to score with one but the referee ordered a retake and scored it so he never missed one.

Memories include "bullet header" and"played like he had a boot on his head". Then he stayed local after retirement, always a friendly face on the market.

Peter Noble was a really good footballer
Centre Forward, Full Back , Central Mid and Centre Half he could play all to Premier League standard
He was also a nice bloke
He truly is a Legend
One the day he was sat in our seats on the Turf and I suggested to the wife that’s Peter Noble we can’t ask him to move.My wife is less Nostalgic than me so we took up our season ticket seats

It was. Seeler was good in the air for a small 'un and Noble was the same, and they were both losing their hair. UWE UWE!
