Apologies if it's been posted before. Just spotted the name 'Zelem' on BBC Sport and thought. That's a blast from the Burnley past. Peter Zelem. Sure enough. His niece plays for England. Well she's just pulled out with Covid apparently. Nice to see she followed in her uncles footsteps and possibly lived out his dream of playing at the highest level. Thanks to burnmark for the correction.

I always thought it was his niece but you may be right. Coached against her team when she was an Under 10 at United.

I recall that Peter Zelem had his kit sponsored by the band 'The Macc Lads' in the matchday programme.

He looked a good signing in the aftermath of the Orient game but he suffered injuries that kept him out of the side far too often and his career was over before his 27th birthday.

A name you don't forget, although I have to admit I can't remember anything about him playing for us.

From what I remember he did look an upgrade on the previous season but that wasn't difficult. I want to say he played RB/Right CH but could be wrong.

My eldest son was in North Manchester Hospital about 18 months ago with an ear infection. After three long nights the nurse discharging him had the surname Zelem. I couldn't resist asking if she was any relation, and it turns out that the nurse was Peter Zelem's niece. Her dad was Peter's twin brother who was also a professional footballer.
The nurse mentioned that her sister was a good footballer and played for Juventus at the time, so based on this I assume that Katie will be Peter Zelem's niece.

Wait till you read this, Quicknick...
My most abiding memory of Peter zelem is standing behind him in the queue for a hot dog, half time at the Shay. Think we won 2-1.
EDIT: 03 Sept 1988 for the history buffs
