Nixon’s Sunday update

Post by LAM » Sun Oct 04, 2020 9:08 am

For those not on Twitter

Liverpool will accept 10m plus extras for Wilson. Burnley still arguing amongst themselves.

Our top scout at Dundee United watching Logan Chalmers.

The Wilson saga is odd as I thought we had offered up to 16?

Watching last night made me think getting a flair/luxury player like Wilson at any price, even as low as £10M, really isn't the answer. It's far more fundamental than that imo. The engine room in midfield was wide open far too often and we need to stop shipping soft goals at the back. It looked far more "root and branch" than throwing big money at this chap.

Nixon saying the price was haggled down to £10 million plus extras but then we pulled out of the deal.

Didn’t Nixon say we were bringing in Dawson on Radio Lancs a couple of Fridays ago. Hard to glean how ‘in the know’ he really is but folks certainly seem to hang on his every word.

While the bit about ‘arguing amongst ourselves’ is nevertheless a damning observation, have we any proof that an offer was actually tabled for Wilson. What stops us going back in for him? if indeed his price has been lowered.

The picture being painted is too many egos and a genuine lack of leadership, in the meantime it’s filtering into our worst start of a season since 2003.

I’ve thought this from the very start. Wilson isn’t a Dyche type at all. McNeill and Wilson will not start a game together imo. This transfer shouts out at another Vydra type. Very few minutes unless an injury crisis hits.

Problem is our wide players are almost expected to play as second full backs. Is Wilson the man for that sort of role?

He has to spend a hell of a lot of time defending. At times our midfield line of 4 is sat so deep they're virtually on our defenders toes.

If he's effectively a second full back you have to wonder why he's impressed so much over the past couple of seasons because he's certainly no full back.

Which is what it is, we would have had 3 players in, IF Tarky moved on.

Now listen to Mr Dyche, he is saying we can and probably will go with what we have.

It's a failure of 3 windows this, not just 1

He also spends a lot of time in midfield, generally just pushing the ball around. He is at his most dangerous when him and Taylor go down the wing together, then one runs into space allowing the cross. Too often its left to Taylor to run down the flank on his own. Last night even Taylor was off with many of his crosses being easy to defend. You would have thought PL coaches like Dyche would see that and address it in the game. There is no point Dwight acting as defender , these are not his qualities.
We are possibly the only club in the PL that can change its defence and shape round in a game-ie suddenly going 3 at the back and using Talor and Lowton as wide men with an additional 3 in midfield, and keeping 2 strikers

The week leading up to the expectation Tarks would be sold to Leicester we were being linked to multiple good players worth a pretty penny. As soon as it was announced Tarks wasn’t leaving, all trails went immediately cold.

That’s all folks.

Yep, clear now that it was us that pulled out of this deal when Tarks move didn’t come off, not Liverpool playing hard ball.

Sounds to me from the updates that we continued to press for his signing even when the JT deal broke down.

Is a guy who is described as a dead ball specialist but can't score from 12 yards worth £10m?

I'd imagine there are a few re-examining Wilson's "performance analysis" videos.

Who knows, with luck, they have got access to some additional player analysis from ALK.

Maybe the "internal" is between current club set up and prospective new owners. It will be the latter who will "pay the bill."

In all of his public utterances SD was adamant that he wanted Tarks to stay, and was well aware that Burnley had a SELL FIRST and BUY SECOND strategy, therefore he chose the path that he wanted to go down.

Far from ideal that we don't have funds to strengthen but these are strange and challenging times for many.

If we do have to sell before we buy, loans have been proven to work. Didn't we have Trippier and Mee on loan?

Ibe went for more and he was a bag of **** despite the experts on here having a fit because we didn't try to sign him.

I'd rather pay £10 million plus add ons for Wilson than the money Bournemouth paid out for Ibe.

If we haven’t got £10m to spend on a first team starter after 5 years in the Premier League then we might as well ******* pack it all in now.

£5 million profit per season (just less), and reportedly £40 million in the bank - but kept due to possible rebates from the TV companies (Covid).

So if the right player comes along, they probably will spend £10-15 million. Hence why we seemed to still be in for Wilson after the JT deal broke down. But that's fag packet calculations and hearsay.

Think our wages to turnover ratio was 63% 18-19, factor overheads and infracture spend maybe upto 80%. Say on average we pull in 125m (tv , ticket catering & corporate)
Fag packet calcs leaves us with 25m for player investment....or 20m if you want 5m profit....we are fooked!!

6m plus 2m in add-ons that relate to goals scored and us staying up. Nothing to do with him playing for Wales. On top of that a 20% sell on fee and a buy back option for £20m+. If they really think he is worth 20-30m Liverpool can't lose with an offer like that. That offer would have to take into account what his expected wages are, because ongoing wages and bonuses add a lot to the cost of a player.

He would be something of a luxury, because I still can't see how he would be an effective fit for our framework. To take advantage of his set piece ability he would have to be on the pitch and playing, which could be problematic considering he doesn't really suit the way we play.

Soccer isn't like American Football were you can just bring on a dedicated point kicker.

However, he does have some interesting qualities and we do need more bodies at the moment. If we lose Mc Neil or Brady in the future then he might make a reasonable replacement, providing that we can hammer the desire to score at all costs out of him, glue him to the side line and develop his team based creative side. He might also make for a good replacement central attacker if we move Vydra on.

Although, I suspect that signing him would pretty much guarantee Brady leaving on a free transfer, which would cost us money if he had any intention of signing a new contract.

I'm still puzzled why Wilson made it onto our target list, given that he isn't a Dyche type of player and he doesn't really suit us. 10m plus add-ons is still too high a price for me though, especially with nobody else apparently interested before the looming deadline.

I would see him as an emergency back-up option for the coming season and a player for the future, with the possible option to shake things up a bit.

Letting the option pass would still leave us with the opportunity to do business with EPL teams. However, a lot of the good bargains have already gone. We should have really been testing the waters before now to get an idea of what might still be available and what any players we might be interested in would cost if their clubs are open to selling.

Swansea are struggling financially.

https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/foo ... k-17708427

https://www.swanseacity.com/news/swanse ... t-accounts

and those articles came from shortly before the Corona hit.

I like the look of Connor Roberts and Joe Rodon is a very good player ( however, the fact that he has missed 50% of his games for Swansea due to injury in the last 2 years is a concern ). Either one could be a good pick up for us, but that would depend heavily on the price. Swansea let Clucas and Fabianski go for fair returns, but they asked for and got two very generous transfer fees for McBurnie and James.

I would put a figure of around 4m on Roberts ( less would be better ) and maybe as high as 6m for Rodon, but I'm thrifty and value conscious. The biggest barrier to signing either of them would be Steve Cooper, who has publicly declared in not uncertain terms that he doesn't want to lose any players and they need more.

However, Trevor Birch is aware of the need to sell and he calls the final shots, even though the fans would probably mutiny at the thought of losing those two players for a combined total of less than 10m.

The fact that they are already under represented in central defence is another stumbling block ( but we could send Dunne their way on loan ). On the upside they need to bring in money and the sale of Celina for 3m probably didn't do enough on that front.

I'm also very surprised that Preston haven't sold anyone yet, given that they were running at a constant loss before Corona hit and they have just bought Wigans training ground ( will that affect their FFP obligations ? ). Ben Davies would be the player I would like us to look at from them.

Wallace from Millwall, BOS and Manning from QPR would be others. Having missed out on Eliasson at 2m I can't really understand why we aren't looking at manning given that he would command a similar fee or maybe less. He has been frozen out at QPR and a move looks highly likely.

I agree about Wallace at Millwall, he looks like he would be okay for us. Not impressed by BOS from what I have seen, don't know much about Manning.

Swansea are struggling financially.

and those articles came from shortly before the Corona hit.

There is plenty of player's to be picked up in the world of football it's just criminal that the Burnley board and recruitment team don't have a clue how to

Swansea have brought 2 new investors on board since then - though from at least one of them new money is in the form of a loan - in both cases I believe that existing share holders sold shares with the money going to them not the club

Infrastructure costs such as the training ground do not affect EFL Profit and Sustainability rules

Ha, probably - although my battery does last 17 months.

And it's backfired - people are now purposely quoting it.

No problem with Long Time Lurker's posts, but I can please ask that you don't quote him, as my mobile phone doesn't appear to agree and just freezes with all the scrolling. Less scrolling means the board is more usable.

I agree about Wallace at Millwall, he looks like he would be okay for us. Not impressed by BOS from what I have seen, don't know much about Manning.
Manning is a left sided midfielder who played as a left wing back for QPR last season and did okay, but the defensive side of his game could stand some improvement.

But we don't need urgently another left midfielder ?

I would agree, but if we don't trigger the extension clause in Pieters contract next season we will be in the market for a new back up wingback for Taylor. That could mean another fumbling sojourn for us and the prospect of paying through the nose to bring in a replacement or not getting anyone. The same will be true for the left midfield slot if Brady leaves us on a free transfer.

Manning would be another body on the team bus and bringing him in now for 2m or less would give us a lot of time to work with him. Remember how much Trips improved in his time with us. It would also free up Pieters to shift around more this season and fill in out on the right of midfield if we need him to.

With our recruitment as it is I think picking up players that have a chance of making it with us when they are going cheap, even though we don't have an urgent need, is wiser than putting our faith in them to get the job done during a time critical scenario.

LTL Quick Quote option

However, it would simpler if everyone just snipped out a big chunk of my posts when quoting. To do that you just click quote, type your comment in, click on full editor and preview, then chop out most of the text wall and click submit.
