I would suggest he's a more than decent player who both the club and the lad himself PROBABLY felt wasn't going to ever be quite good enough to hold a place in a PL team, but definitely could make a career outside that level. Hence we offer him a new deal and he turns it down and joins a lower league club. That way we are then entitled to a fee, but more importantly, we can attach add ons to the deal just in case he develops into a real gem somewhere down the line.

Hardly news from Nixon is it? I've had the article written since last weekend although, as yet, the signing hasn't been confirmed.

It's common practice to offer young players a contract you know they are never going to sign.

Give us more flexibility and options in terms of demanding fees / compensation.

That was revealed last June when he was ruled out of the squad for the Man City game

Let’s hope he is the next Lee Dixon who earns the club some money in a few years

I had the impression that he was one of the better players in our under 23s. Seemed to score a lot for a player who played at left back and midfield.
Can't help but wonder if his contract circumstances had been different if he would have been one of the first to have got his chance post covid and during the recent cup games or has he gone backwards since that loan to Swindon? Seems a long time ago now.

This is what Kevin Long should have done 6 years ago

From what I read at the time, I believe he did very well at Swindon and was definitely knocking on the door when he came back. I THINK it was extremely unfortunate timing, especially for the lad, that his contract was expiring and he was unsure whether to sign another (and thus committing X number of further years to Burnley) just at the time of the re start when almost certainly he'd have been one of the young lads getting a look in.

Apparently his bank manager doesn't agree. ;)

He scored all those goals generally when he was playing further forward with Anthony Glennon playing at left back and this was after he'd come back from Swindon. There was a time around 12 months ago when we felt he was outgrowing the U23s and needed to get some more first team football. His performances did drop off in the last few months though prior to the season being curtailed.

By offering him a deal of course it means we are now entitled to some compensation should he sign for another club in England. It will be minimal I would think but if we can agree a decent sell on clause in there then we at least get something more if he moves upwards.

That is just something added to make it sound like an inside scoop, I suspect.

Perhaps we've learnt something from Brentford in that one. A good sell on clause could bring is a nice sum one day if he performs at that level.
