Re: 3 from 5 already
There we have it then. Norwich, Watford, and Arsenal will ply their trade in the Championship next season.
They can't really have any complaints as they haven't been good enough over the course of the 180 minutes. I'd expect Arsenal to bounce back but the other two might need to do some soul searching after another relegation.

Re: 3 from 5 already
For some reason I just watched the 2nd half of Arsenal and Chelsea and to see a club of Arsenal's stature and tradition join an ever increasing number of also-rans in this league makes me wonder just where the game is heading. Expect the Super League to make a mark sooner than later.

I'd be quite happy to see the "big" clubs bugger off somewhere and let the rest of us enjoy a more even and fairer competition, but weren't Arsenal going to be part of this Super League?Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 22, 2021 6:33 pmFor some reason I just watched the 2nd half of Arsenal and Chelsea and to see a club of Arsenal's stature and tradition join an ever increasing number of also-rans in this league makes me wonder just where the game is heading. Always made me laugh at this Super League talk. Eventually, fast-forward time and what was once a big club eventually becomes an average-sized club. You go forward enough years and Forest Green Rovers win the Premier League.

Southampton surprised me today. Following that very good performance I’m hoping they blow hot and cold and end up being consistently inconsistent.

Re: 3 from 5 already
TBF to Norwich you can't exactly judge them against Liverpool & City.
It is incredibly early, and the transfer window hasn't even shut yet, however already there does appear to be essentially 2 leagues emerging.
And at a rough guess the relegated teams will come from 3 of Brentford, Brighton, Burnley, Newcastle, Norwich, Palace, Southampton, Watford or Wolves.
I can't see Arsenal or Leeds being stuck amongst the strugglers for long, but with Leeds in particular you simply never know, 2nd season syndrome might be kicking in, as it did with Sheff Utd.
The important aspect for Brentford and Brighton especially is they've picked up points against their probable relegation rivals, and any points on the board must be welcomed by teams of their calibre, it means that when they hit a rough patch later in the season, they've got a bit of a buffer to protect them.
That Leeds game isn't a must win by any means, but it is an important encounter even at this embryonic stage of the season.
Re: 3 from 5 already
Unless Norwich learn how to grind out results they'll really struggle, like last time.
All well and good trying to play entertaining football, but if they keep losing it won't end well for them.

Tough opening 3 games for them though, Liverpool, City & Leicester, today although a defeat will offer Farke some encouragement.
From our POV the more sides who struggle the better, and Norwich don't look hugely better than their last time in the PL.
However ultimately it's up to us to put the points on the board first and foremost, if we do that then it won't matter what anyone else does or doesn't do.

What is scary is the state of the League positions (top and bottom) even after 2 - 3 games
Re: 3 from 5 already
Norwich are too easy to play against. They have some decent players, but they are nice to play against.
They are too open and try to play nice football against every team, but seem soft and without grit.

Yes the similarities between Norwich and Fulham are eerie, both look great in the Championship, but they've both proven hopelessly out of their depth in the harsh reality of the PL.
Playing nice footy is all very well, but nice footy alone won't get you enough wins in this league, you need to find a way to win ugly sometimes, and that's where hopefully Burnley's nous will be the difference come the business end of the season, we now what it takes to tough it out at this level, and grind out the results when needed.

Will be interesting to see how Leeds get on this season as a number on their main forum are complaining about a lack of depth.

Leeds certainly aren't hitting the heights they did last season, 2nd season syndrome kicking in perhaps.
They played well for the first half hour today, but after that we slowly took a grip of the match, and TBH they looked fairly ordinary.
They probably overachieved last year, and that was always going to be hard to follow up, but knowing how fickle some of their fans can be, it wouldn't surprise me to see MB coming under pressure if they remain in the lower reaches of the table for too long.

Leeds need the space to get their runners moving. They hit a lot of early balls for knock backs or runners and if you deny that space they struggle a bit.
More teams will do what we did and if they struggle more we will see how they react to being closer to a relegation battle

Nonsense. The bookies have Leeds to be relegated at 8/1 and us to finish top 10 at 8/1. So despite the flair and coaching nouse that has lead to premier league finishes not as high as our best one there is most definitely not less chance of Leeds being relegated than us finishing top 15.warksclaret wrote: ↑Tue Sep 14, 2021 11:44 amTheres less chance of Leeds being relegated than us finishing in the top 15.Too much flair and coaching "nouse"
Re: 3 from 5 already
last season we'd got 1 point from five matches. Likewise in the season when we were playing in Europe.
Interestingly though, teams were accumulating points at a better rate up the table last season than they are this so it might mean more teams pulled into the relegation scrap this year.
Two or three wins in a row really does pull you up the table so hopefully we can get a couple of back-to-back wins, especially with Cornet looking a good player.
We shall see.

But them apart I can't see the others being as poor as last season's bottom 3, certainly points wise anyway, so although we're only 5 games in, and it's far too early to hit the panic button yet, we do need to start putting points on the board soon.
Leicester can perhaps be classed as somewhat of a free hit, and anything we pick up there can probably be regarded as a bonus, but even at this early stage you'd have to deem the Norwich game as one we really need to win, if for no other reason than to ensure we remain in touch with the pack, and also just to give the whole team a much needed lift.
The more sides down at the foot the better for me, but ultimately we can only influence our results, and as long as we pick up the required points, what the rest do will have no bearing on our survival or not.
What gives me confidence is in both those seasons you cited, we still comfortably stayed up despite the sluggish beginning, and usually when this squad have needed to dig crucial results out, the manager and players have delivered the goods.
Re: 3 from 5 already
Must admit that I thought Leeds weren't going to be struggling as much as they are before the start of the season, but it's now clear you can add them to the list of relegation candidates.

Re: 3 from 5 already
I was curious as to whether it's true that there won't be three teams as bad as there were last season so had a quick look at the tables at the same stage as last season, allowing for the fact that when we'd played Man City at the same point some sides had played a game more.
Anyway, it's noticeable that at the very bottom the points distribution is similar to last season for the bottom sides. There was then a bit of a gap as those teams further up the table had a good points to games ratio that isn't as evident this year.
For those thinking the likes of Brighton and Brentford are clear of danger look at Southampton. Despite their impressive start their form collapsed soon after and ended up two places above us in the table.

No, as it's hard to tell what'll happen from here. All I'm pointing out is that currently the situation isn't much different from what we faced last season at a similar point in time. I remember the melt down very well after we'd lost 5-0 to Man City and it was all doom and gloom.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Sun Oct 24, 2021 11:02 amHow much would you like to wager that the three worst clubs (excluding Burnley) this season all dont get to 30 points? Re: 3 from 5 already
Yes they were. But after being on 29 points from 17 matches, sitting in 6th spot, they only got a further 14 points from 21 matches ending up 6th from bottom.
I'm not saying any team in the top half is going to go down but the brutal nature of the Prem means nothing can be taken for granted.

Re: 3 from 5 already
It may well be three teams from the current five at the bottom to go down, but what is reassuring is that we are still within three points of climbing out of the drop zone and also we have games in hand with the other four teams around us (although I accept these games only matter if we pick up points from them!). We just need to string together a small unbeaten run now with the odd win or two included in there. Let's see... UTC.

As daft as it seems, the table is looking better now than a month ago & we haven't played !
Win one of those games in hand and it takes the pressure off, win two games out of the next four and the table takes on a completely different perspective and it looks rosey.

I'd take 2 wins in next 6, that'd be a dream return IMO, even more so if 1 is against Leeds.
We've left ourselves in quite a pickle with the no shows against Norwich, Newcastle, Wolves and to a lesser extent West Ham, as they're a good side.

Man Utd- they aren't the force they once were, as Newcastle & Watford have aptly demonstrated amongst other, plus we possess a decent record at OT in recent times, so at our best, and if they play as limply as they did at SJP, we can definitely get something.
Leeds- agree with you this is the biggie, we should have taken at least a point at ER last season, and were only minutes away from a deserved win against them earlier in the campaign, plus they have some key players missing, notably Bamford & Phillips, and their recent form is hardly anything to write home about.
Leicester- sure they beat Liverpool last night, but they are erratic, and also have major injury problems, and their record at TM isn't great.
Arsenal- this will be tough as Arteta has got them motoring, but we've run them close on several occasions in recent years, and did take 4 points off them last term.
Liverpool- Leicester showed last night that they are beatable with commitment, and your keeper having a blinder.
Man Utd- we only lost narrowly to them at TM last season, and they aren't to be feared as they would have been back in the day.
Worst case scenario I've got a funny feeling we'll pick 4/5 points out of that lot, and then most of our most difficult games are out of the way, and we can focus on taking points off our direct relegation rivals, which will ultimately be the key as to whether we survive or not, and I wholeheartedly agree with you we need to beat the teams in the lower half of the table, especially when they visit TM.
