Blimey! I didn't realise CM was still only 33, one of our standouts in the Coyle promotion season, and sadly he never quite got the chance to showcase his talents in the PL mainly due to being blighted by injuries, who knows how 09/10 would have turned out if he'd remained fit, he looked up to the standard in his brief outings at that level, and we sorely missed him when he was out.

Shamrock will be a good fit..
They are a cracking bunch over there.
My Brother and found ourselves sat with the entire 1st team when we played them in the friendly at Tallaght a few years ago.
They were a right laugh, they had played in Europe the night before and were in high spirits... We had great fun and banter with them.

Reigning Irish Champs so CL qualifiers at least. I really rated him and what hurt the most was the assault by Turner, Sunderland, was deliberate. Basturd.

Never the same after the Sunderland injury. Such a shame.

Incredibly took nearly a year to realise he'd suffered an ACL - came back twice before finally having the surgery

Won the MLS cup playing for Atlanta only a couple of years ago.
I know the standard is nowhere near over here but it must have been a really big achievement for him so late in his career. Atlanta had an amazing new stadium and getting big crowds.
Was a good player for us but the injury had a big impact on him. Not sure of exact timescales between him leaving and David Jones joining us but I do remember that we went from a team who seemed to lose the ball a lot in midfield with McCann when he was starting to struggle to a very different team where Jones was the focal point and pretty much started most of our moves and retained the ball really well...better than I had seen a Burnley midfielder do for a long long time.

Showed promise in his early days but never fulfilled that potential. Towards the end of his time here he seemed to be hiding in our midfield - not making himself available for the ball and certainly not playing with any authority.
I remember having debates on the previous forum with posters who rated him higher than Marney, who was a far more effective player.

Pretty much passed each other by.
McCann left in the June, Jones started training with us in the July.

I thought Marney was a bang average player until Dyche came and David Jones joined him in midfield.
Marney and Jones complimented each other perfectly and brought out the best in each other - I’m sure they’d both say that the years they were our centre midfield duo was the best football both of them played in their entire careers.

Who was it that made him captain?
Think it was a big ask for somebody so young and to me that seemed to coincide with his dip in form.

Marney certainly improved significantly under Dyche, but I always felt he was an upgrade on McCann.

I don’t know but he seemed like the polar opposite of captaincy material.

Was never the same player after the zfirst big injury, shame up to then he looked like he was developing into quite a player. More than anything though he reminds me of the time when the likes of Wigan could turn Burnley first team players heads.

Not so sure - before his injury I think McCann played some really good stuff for us. He was up there as our best player for a while and bigger clubs were looking at him.
Marney came and initially I didn’t even get what type of midfielder with us - he couldn’t hit a barn door with his shooting and was not a passing midfielder either. He offered the team very little IMHO but to be fair to him he was playing in struggling teams and a couple of managers who never got much going for us.

A fully fit McCann never played with Marney. I do believe he was nothing like the same player after the injury.

People held on to the time he was good after his injury Riley. They didn't want to accept what had happened.

Never liked him after I went on a stadium tour of the Turf around 2009ish. He was in the dressing room when we were taken in there but was surly and uncommunicative resulting in me developing a prejudice against him. Totally irrelevant I do realise but I thought of this when I saw the thread title !

Was any explanation given for this? Surely for a trained medical team/physio/doctor it should be easily spottable an ACL injury?

I remember his return from injury towards the end of a season, Derby away was it? When he smashed in a goal from around 25/30 yards out and thought next season McCann will be back! Sadly it never happened.

Shame what happened to him in that Sunderland game, he was at his peak then and 'Zinedine McCann' looked like he'd make it in the Prem. We'll never know, seems a decent sort though and glad he's had a reasonable career, if not the one he could have had.

Howe. In fairness where we were then was totally different to now. Big things expected. And even more so after his game and goal at derby.

It was picked up in Singapore during the pre-season in 2010. By that time we'd changed physio and medical team who acted promptly.

Those socks were brilliant. Bought a pair but unfortunately they went in a wash which turned the blue to purple. Was fair to say I was gutted and had to have serious words with the wife....

Scored v Ipswich in one of the worst games I've seen
Ipswich playing for a draw and kicking lumps of us the Chris popped up and scored deep into added time.
Similar story to Kyle Lafferty, they both seemed to fade off at the same time

That’s one of my favourite Burnley strips of all time - and the hooped socks just finished it off perfectly.
Abiding memory of that strip is our little magician and his incredible goal v United
