Anyone know the correct measures for a Bene n Hot?
Is it equal measures of each or 2 parts hot water to 1 part Bene?

The guy that’s the official Bene talent on YouTube put a shot in and filled up a pint glass with hot! I’ve found 1 bene to 1.5 hot the best winter remedy here in NM.

Pour 1 measure of Bene into a glass. Swirl around the glass to aerate and flush down the sink. Use 2 measures of hot water to wash the glass, drain and proceed to pour yourself a proper drink.

At uni I knew a lad from Hornsea which was the place in the UK that first started importing Benedictine (after the war I think).

They had some great recipies for drinks with it but he couldn't believe it had found its way from Hornsea to Burnley where we have adopted it and made our own special drink out of it.

What a mad old world that never ceases to amaze and surprise me.

Never had it

I part Bene to 2 parts hot water will do. Some like it a little stronger some prefer a longer drink.

It protects from Covid or that is wat I am telling myself!!

Having a weird mind, I have occasionally wondered what the purchasing departments of the major supermarket chains make of the Christmas stock requirements put in by their East Lancashire branches. I believe Benedictine is shipped in cases of six bottles, so the order list may look some thing like ...

Bristol Town Centre 3 cases

Bury 8 cases

I just wonder how many phone calls/e-mails have been sent over the years, " Hello, Perkins here from Head Office, we're just looking at your stock order for Christmas, are you sure your ...... ? "

I’ve found Bene n got to be a good cure for a cold, but this is a fantastic response

For us that have never experienced a ‘been n hot’ what does it taste like - for some reason, and I’m probably way off, I expect it to be like a jagermeister (which is surprising nice with lemonade).

Much nicer than Jagermeister ...more warming and less sweet/sickly imo. A beautiful drink which I have made a few converts too "down South".

Went in an Indian restaurant in St Albans this year and was surprised and delighted to see Benedictine on their spirits menu !

I think it's like a really sweet whisky.

It may well have been imported into Hornsea, but Burnley tommies serving on the Western Front returning to Burnley is the reason it is so popular in Burnley, the East Lancs saw Bene being produced there as a cold and consumption remedy by monks, for the local population.

I sailed with a lad many moons ago who had no connections to Burnley but used to drink gallons of the stuff. He used to have a stiff glass before going on watch (No one worried in those days) and swore by the stuff

Joking aside, I was apprentice steward in the Miners about 18 years ago, so I'm well-versed in the origins of the stuff.

I will raise a glass of the Benedictine nectar to celebrate the birthdays today of Factual Frank and Bobinho

Complete Woosh is right. Still don’t get it to be honest. I was invited to visit the areas as part of a colleagues research but COVID put an end to what was going to be a very interesting research trip. Hopefully the chance will come again.

I think that is not quite true, DA.
The Burnley story is very much WW1 trench based. Those links are direct. No reason why the same thing would not apply elsewhere. In the case of Burnley, WW1 lives on.

Its a long time ago since my friend told be about it so its all a bit hazy but I think the Hornsea soldiers were stationed near some Benedictine monks during either the War of the 6th or the 7th Coalition in the early 19th Century.

The Monks introduced them to their homemade brew (Benedictine) and the Hornsea soldiers liked it so much when they returned home they brought the drink back with them.

Maybe in later years some Hornsea soldiers came into contact and shared the drink and the story with some soldiers from our neck of the words and this is why they maybe sought out the drink during WW1 when stationed near a monastery themselves.

I guess we'll never know the full truth but both stories are fascinating and something for both communities to be very proud of

About 10 years ago I spent several months weekly commuting to Rotterdam. During the week I stayed at the Novotel in the centre of town with the rest of the team from all over Europe. I got them all into Bene and hot and it became out team drink at the end of the evening.

The project ended and we all went our separate ways. However last year I happened to be back in Rotterdam and stayed at the same hotel for old times sake. Sure enough behind the bar was bottle of Bene and the barman informed him that there was a dozen bottles in the back and he could not understand why his predecessor had ordered so much!!

The wife drinks gallons of it, but I only have it occasionally. However, it really does cure absolutely owt and Astra/Zeneca or Pfizer or whoever are definitely missing a trick!!

My grandma used to like a bene but she said she only drunk it for medicinal purposes. Given how much she got through I reckon she must have always been ill. My dad liked it and my brother does but I find bene a bit too sweet.
