I wear German para MK2 I got sick of rolling my ankle with anything else, there might not have the goretex certification but I’ve worn them in all occasions & there repel water my socks are completely dry.

I'm not sure where you live BB...but Winfield's in Haslingden sell fantastic hiking/walking boots at great prices.

of Karrimors. Lasted ages, now on their way out, £45. Good bargain.

Its probably shut now, like most places like that, though. Don't know if they're online.

I’d highly recommend Mil-tec German army boots. Waterproof, warm but very light.

Your budget is spot on - if you are a fairly serious walker don't go for some of the common mid range brands. The above would be ideal. But another option - a lighter option if you like depending on your needs - would be INOV8 Roclite G 345 GTX.

Winfield's also online with money off and a extra 5% off your first order.

I have found Winfields to be fairly pricy in recent years. Not the bargain place it used to be. Sportsshoes dot com has a bigger range and is cheaper I reckon.

My old pair are Karrimor from when they were made locally and are probably the best hiking boots I've owned. Karrimor are now part of Sport Direct and made in China. Such a shame - Karrimor was decent gear.

A pair of Merrells for me everytime. Give them a coat of looking at.

Timberland had an offer on recently at their Cheshire Oaks store with a buy one get 50% off another. Superb quality and comfortable. My wife and I bought our first boots on a similar offer over 10 years ago (In Vegas) and they have stood the test of time so upgraded with another two pairs. My boots get some serious hammer; Snowdon, Sca Fell Pike and the Berwyn Ramblers who trudge around Llangollen. Recommended.

I suspect the OP is after something for rambling in, not annexing Poland.

Once you settle on a your choice of hiking boots invest in a decent pair of ‘insoles’. I found that this makes a lot of difference to comfort on long distance and tough hill walking.

I got a pair in TOFS recently, decent pair of Trespass but they are shoes rather than boots but they had a decent selection of boots as well.

Boyes also have a decent range with good brands (including Merrell) but I guess the range will vary from store to store and now isn't the time for browsing.

Anything Mil-Tec will be spot on.
I use Helikon though.

The suggestion was more than adequate for the purpose, the 3 peaks, Pendle, bouleworth, howgills stand testament as long as you dub the boots periodically pre winter I do mine & I also got a vibram sole fitted, haix are a solid choice I’ll go with next.

When did we hike? We walk, ramble, and even scramble. For most of the above you'll need: walking boots.

I've had 2 pairs of Zamberlan boots over the last 20 years: excellent quality and comfort. Lancashire Sports Repairs on Athletic Street does good sole and heel repairs.

Altberg boots for the winter season, gtx merrel lightweight boots for the other 3 seasons. As someone else suggested, get some custom insoles. Warm and Dry at Whalley will get you fitted out correctly, well worth a visit (not sure if they are open at the moment though), but they certainly know their stuff. Highly recommend them.

I think it's vital when selecting Boots/Shoes requirements as they can be very individual as I have found out over the years, if walking/hiking/playing ball sports, racket sports they all require different things about them.

For hill walking what suits me are a pair of Hi-Tec cost £39 boots from Millets about 10 years ago, they have split across the area after the instep but I still wear them in dry weather.

Another problem is that trying to buy the same boot years later is problematic as a lot of companies discontinue lines very quickly.

Not a “big brand” or pricey but these are some of the best boots I’ve ever had. Grip well and super comfortable and warm/dry. Not much more I need from a pair of boots tbh, and the fact they’re high on the ankle is a bonus for me personally too.

I've had a good pair of North Ridge but eventually the top toe area started to let water in even though I waterproofed them regularly. I decided on a cheap pair from Go Outdoors, I've had them 7 months and they're falling apart somthey'll be returned when I can. Thought I'd go for a pair of Hi-Tec Lite Eurotek, Cotswold are asking £90 but Go Outdoors and others are asking anywhere from £55 plus. They had an excellent write up. The problem is everywhere is sold out. There's a lot of people buying walking boots at the moment.

Some excellent advice on here. I'll check out all the recommendations. Many thanks to everyone.

You can get them on eBay starting from £50 I’ve just checked the “eurotek” I think you mean eurotrek, anyway assuming you mean eurotrek & not tek it’s only selected sizes some at £55 have more sizes, scarpa aren’t a bad shout but not the cheapest.

No worries, that’s the only trouble the sought after sizes are more expensive & subject to availability, there say small is a disadvantage but when you are buying certain items it’s cheaper & always available.

I own a pair of AKU Alterra which I purchased from Keswick boot company, they cost £209.00.

I could have got them cheaper on line but the shop measured my feet, so I was sure that they fit perfectly.
I usually wear 10s but these are 101/2 they are the best, driest and most comfortable boots I have ever wore, perfect for hill walking in the Pennines and Lakes.

I used to have a pair of Solomon and they lasted less than 2 years, the soles were worn out and they were useless on moorland walks because they are not water proof.

You won’t get a decent pair of boots under £150.00 and you definitely won't get a decent boot from Winfields

Check out Keen shoes/boots. Most comfy we've worn.

Warm & Dry is open I went a day or so before Christmas - the boot service may be appointment only, I was looking at the Paramo jackets. I agree with the recommendation, my wife had never found a comfy pair of boots which caused her (and me ) a lot of discomfort! She had the Altberg's customised and wears them every day without a moan or groan... Bliss.

I wear Berghaus supalite ll gortex boots and they are worth every penny - I do quite a lot of miles a week in them. Have a Google for reviews.

I also use Karrimor Orkney walking boots as spairs, I have had many pairs over the years but find them very heavy. The quality has gone downhill as mentioned above.

Worth finding the right boot, personally I like all leather and then shopping around to see who has best price. Would avoid sealskinz socks when walking as they do not let your feet breath

I would highly recommend visiting Outdoor action in Blackburn when the shop re-opens to the public again. Really helpful and knowledgable staff. When I want new walking boots or clothing, I always tell them my budget/requirements and they recommend the best items for the price range.

Outdoor action also has some great clobber in the back.
Cheap(relatively) mountain equipment stuff.
It’s important not to mix up with go outdoors or mountain warehouse though especially up ingleborough in a blizzard

Zamberlan, Scarpa, Meindl, Brasher

All good brands.

If doing serious winter walking you'll need something different to what you would likely use in the summer/autumn

You could ask Barnes and Wood which hiking boots they were playing in today.

I had some expensive German boots bought as a present but have never used them. I still wear a pair of Brashers - about 20 years old and still superb plus when I need em re-soling (still years away) the official Brasher resole man is non other than Eric Wrathall who runs the little shoe repair shop close to Todmorden Market.

Scarpa Cyrus are excellent have gone for these since Berghaus changed Expeditor Ridge

Another vote for decent combat boots. Mainly because they are cheaper to buy. My brother spends hundreds and I struggle to see the benefits personally. Waterproof, confident grip and comfortable? Yep, so are mine. What else do you need? Super lightWeight? I suppose that could be useful for some people...

You don't need insoles when you buy a quality pair of boots

Winfields is an all round choice I’d go to winfields for a tent & maybe a few other things, there do stock odd good makes, I think there stock brasher or Berghaus which have joined forces in the footwear department, regarding insoles the other poster is right any decent boots worth there salt you buy should negate the need for insoles, I’ve only ever bought arch supports as an accessory.
