Drop ball

A question for our 2 refereeing experts on the site. Are contested drop balls now forbidden? When Shaw and Mee clashed heads the ball was just outside the area with neither team in possession.
The restart was for the ball to be given to De Gea in an uncontested drop. Is that now the rule or can you still have a contested drop.

Thought this was about Dyche

Not a refereeing expert, but I understand they’ve been banned due to the risk of injury to the 2 players.

Pretty sure that's the rule now. Think it was changed at the start of last season.

They can still be contested unless you are playing a top four privilege team in which case the ball has to be given back to them.

They've been abolished since 2019, but let's not let the facts get in the way of a good conspiracy.

It was a joke Chris.

The ball was actually in our possession when he blew up to get treatment for the head injuries. It should have been a drop ball to a Burnley player out near the touchline and 30 yards from goal. I was amazed that he restarted with a dropped ball to the keeper ---but it was in added time and it was United!

If it's in the box when the whistle goes it automatically reverts to the goalkeeper irrespective of the team in possession is what I've read previously (presume it's a new thing)

The ball had been played out of the area before the whistle blew, had the whistle gone when the ball was in the area then the drop ball does go to the keeper.

Fair enough, wasn't sure when he'd blown. Was a fair bang of swedes!

The ball was defo out of the area in our possession when he blew up. Thought it strange at the time to drop it to De Gea.

Decision spot on for me. I’ve watched it back and I can’t be certain from the pictures whether the ball has or hasn’t left the penalty box but it’s in the air and neither side has possession. Can’t see what else he could have done under the current dropped ball rules other than to give the ball to David de Gea.

If it’d happened in our half I suspect he’d have given us a free kick. Shaw is late to the ball.

The drop ball is now uncontested, it should go back to the team in possession or who last touched it unless it has come off the referee and gone to the opposition.
The opponent must retreat 4m and can not encroach until the player has touched the ball.
The side in possession can not score directly from the drop ball. Ie there must be at least 1 pass.

The one we refer to didn’t go to the team who last touched it.

Hence the word "should"

Tony,I was working from memory, however, if you watched it back and the ball was in the air having been last played in the penalty area, then the restart is a dropped ball to the keeper. I had thought that the ball had actually been cleared and been touched by a Claret before the referee blew --obviously, from what you have seen this was not the case.

From memory I thought the ball was leaving the penalty area from a United boot. The whistle was blown before a claret shirt touched it again. Therefore utd drop ball is correct in law.
That said my memory isn't what it used to be so happy to be wrong on this occasion

The ball was actually leaving the penalty area from Jay Rod's boot. A United player heads it initially after the clash and Jay gets a boot on it, the ball goes up and Friend blows just as it is going out of the box.

By touched the definition is played the ball technically.
There is no logic Jay "playing" it backwards as far as it went. It is therefore deemed played by man u and a flick off Jay. Correct decision would be the Man U dropped ball.

It was played deliberately by Jay and is therefore deemed played by Burnley

If they’re now uncontested why do they bother dropping them. Why don’t they just place it on the floor?
