Just watched MOTD and could not velveteen how puny and in disarray Picknose looked. Flapped and flapped. Lost his bearings then fails on a straightforward shot. Awful.

That was after Pipe looked 12 feet tall and 8 feet wide all night!

When Southgate looks, he will have to make the right decision.

The risk is there. That causes defence flaps. We have seen that.

It is no good saying that he has not let England down. He will. They all do eventually. He has made errors previously and yet is still there.

Pickfords handling and positioning was very poor last night ( the latter effecting the former no doubt )
It made him give away needless corners and build unnecessary pressure, and what can you say about the goal?

He has cost Everton several points so this season, and probably the reason they're not sat top or very near to it.

I watched an assessment not long ago by Martyn Margetson (England GK coach) who I assumed would be pro Pickford due to England/Southgate.

He wasn't in the end and made an excellent point about Pickford's starting position with his hands - they are consistently too low. Once you've seen it once you see it every time. It means he is always having to come up to the ball. He starts with his hands practically touching the sides of his legs with his t-rex arms almost vertically downwards.

Margetson compared him to Pope who has his hands starting much higher so his movement to stop most shots is less (plus using his legs well to stop lower ones). Surprised me that he doesn't have enough influence over Southgate the Liar.

Pickford needs a dose of humility. Gives the impression it's never his fault, or it wasn't that bad when he drops one of his many clangers.

Only just watched MOTD. Unbelievable that Southgate thinks there is no one realistically challenging Pickford for no1 spot. He makes 3 bad errors alone for Leicester's goal.

Looking at the two games, it seems impossible that Pickford can be regarded as the better keeper. He looks a division or two lower than Nick Pope at the moment, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him lose his place in the Everton team. He lost them two points last night.

Spot on. TBH it has always been the case with keepers. When you look at the likes of Buffon and even go back as far as the likes of Gordon Banks (even if that was before my time) I reckon the very best keepers made the fewest gaffes.

It is embarrassing that the Pickford clown still gets picked when he has major errors in him that usually end in goals at least once every few games. As much as the game has changed you need a keeper not to drop a b0llok when it really matters. He can’t be trusted surely..

When eyebrows were raised over Martyn Margetson picking apart the techniques of England goalkeepers on a Sky Sports programme, it was mainly because of the flaws he highlighted in Jordon Pickford’s game.

Margetson, part of Gareth Southgate’s coaching staff, was frank about Pickford’s “set-up” when he spoke during the televised goalkeeping tutorial. The Everton goalkeeper was too low, leading to his hands being in the wrong position.

His “masterclass” raised headlines for being a rare occasion when a coach critiques players he is currently working with but there was also a clear explanation of why Nick Pope’s technique is among the best in the Premier League.

The Burnley goalkeeper never gets too low when he positions himself for a shot. That allows him to move his feet quicker. His set-up also means his hands are above his knees, in his eyeline, with coaches saying this makes it easier to save shots. With his hands in front of him, it means Pope is in a strong position for his wrists to stay strong when the ball arrives.

Those technical details from Margetson shown in November have been evident in the last week, where Pope kept a clean sheet at Anfield as Burnley inflicted Liverpool’s first home defeat in 68 matches.

Against Aston Villa on Wednesday he kept his team in the game with a string of saves. That strong wrist came to the rescue to keep out Tyrone Mings, Matt Targett and Jack Grealish. He also denied Ollie Watkins in a one-on-one which allowed his team to snatch a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory which Villa argued was undeserved.

Pope has seven clean sheets in the Premier League this season, with he and Alex McCarthy sharing the best record among English keepers.

Away from his technique, what is noticeable watching him without crowds at Turf Moor is how loud he is. With Sean Dyche on the sidelines and experienced players such as Ben Mee and James Tarkowski in front of him, it would be easy to assume Pope would take a back seat to organising his defence. But it is Pope’s voice that is often heard bellowing instructions, or speaking to the referee from 50 yards away.

After helping his team defeat Villa, Pickford was guilty of an error 50 miles away at Goodison Park. Youri Tielemans’ shot was straight at the Everton goalkeeper but he spilled it into his net, costing his team two points.

Carlo Ancelotti defended Pickford as he has previously this season when the former Sunderland goalkeeper has let in goals he should be keeping out. Robin Olsen has played in FA Cup games and Ancelotti has been impressed enough to push for the Sweden goalkeeper’s loan from Roma to be made permanent, making sure Pickford has competition.

For England, Pope is now making a strong case to be England’s No.1. In terms of mistakes, he rarely makes them, making him the more dependable of the two goalkeepers.

At the World Cup in 2018 Pope, who had been picked ahead of Joe Hart, started the tournament as third-choice but was thought to have moved up the pecking order into second by the time the squad were flying back to England having reached the semi-finals.

Now he has the No1 jersey in his sights. His manager believes he is currently the best performing English goalkeeper in the Premier League.

"I'm going to say that, because I'm his manager, and I have great value in him, his form and how he goes about it,” said Dyche. “He continues to improve in my opinion, I'm completely biased but he's in very good form, that's for sure.”

Pope has only played in three matches since the World Cup, with Pickford starting in 20. There are other keepers also pushing for recognition. McCarthy at Southampton has had a good season, while Karl Darlow has seized his chance at Newcastle after Martin Dubravka injured himself while jogging in the summer. Dean Henderson is in the England squad at the moment, giving Southgate plenty of options and some tough decisions to make as Pope states his case to be No.1.

It shouldn't even be a question.

It beggars belief that they say it’s because Pitchfork can play it out with his feet, that he is Southgates’ No 1. How do they know Nick can’t? He isn’t required to at club level, so when at St George’s Park on the next England call up, try him with the England back 4/5, then play him in a couple of competitive games, not just meaningless friendliest against a pub X1, then decide. I honestly believe that Nick can do this, then even Southgate will concede he is our best “ goalkeeper “.

Much more is made of Pickford’s ability with his feet than is deserved. He is better in this respect than Pope, but not enough to make much difference. Pope is just as capable as anyone of playing a ten yard pass to a full back, and Pickford will often hoof it up the park just like Pope.

OK, he will occasionally pick an excellent long pass - and send the pundits into raptures - but the truth is they’re few and far between.

Perhaps he meant his board won't buy a replacement!

Picknose's inability to make correct decisions makes all areas of his game suspect. He has been caught, more than once, fancying about with his feet and messing up.

He is the equivalent of Brady. One FK about 3 years ago, allegedly gives Brady first go at FKs and corners but nothing at all successful since. Picknose made a long clearance that led to a goal, once.

It was hilarious.

He saves a shot that's going 3 yards wide, The resulting corner sees him jumping like a midget with no legs and flapping at the ball. Then the shot for the goal, well, I'd have saved it.

I'd say it's pretty obvious Pope isn't great with his feet although has improved slightly. Still I'd rather have a keeper that's good at everything else and he's excellent at everything else whereas Pickford is dog turd.

Ancelotti confirms Pickford will be rotated. Well it’s a start, just need the new guy to play well.

It's not even a surprise anymore when Pickford drops a bollock you know every time he plays hes going to throw one in
The one thing I can not stand is the arrogance of this tosser he struts about giving it the big I am and in reality he should be nowhere near playing Premier league football....and almost certainly not International level.

If these days a prerequisite for a goalie is to be good at passing the ball, how long before centre forwards will be expected to be able to punch and catch the ball ?

Joe Jordan and Thierry Henry both "earned" World Cup qualification by doing that.
