One of my top 10 films of all time.
Maybe record it if you've never seen it?
It's one to watch and really listen to - no distractions.
Enjoy!!!

Belter of a film.
If you like this, and don’t mind subtitles then you need to watch The Lives of Others.

I don't know what the subject matter of this one is, but "Das Leben die Anderen" (The life of others is bloody brilliant, I agree.)
There are loads of foreign language films out there. La Haine - Hatred , Pan's Labyrinth and Nordwand being just a few I can think of off the top of my head!

I'll give it ago on iPlayer but 7 hours seems a long running time for a film

I watched the entire series of 'Heimat'.
I think it was Stanley Kubrick said 'It was the best film ever made'.
200 plus hours mind you.
(Just checked, it's only 60 hours. Just seemed like 200. No actually, it's really good.)

I watched La Haine again last week, prompted by the lead actor from The Serpent. Pan's Labyrinth is a good'un, never seen Nordwand so that's on my list - thanks. Some of my favourite films are foreign language, probably because I enjoy seeing the different settings, cultures and styles of film. Amelie is in my top 5. Sorry to divert the thread folks! Enjoy The Conversation, brilliant soundrack!

Amelie is quality.
Nordwand is about Germans trying to climb the Eiger in the 30s.
The orphanage, Spanish film, is quality, as is Rec , IMHO
If you can recommend any FL films, please do. I'm wracking my brains....Micmacs is quiet wacky - think that's Besson too...

Thanks for the recommendation - I'll give it a watch. I went through a phase last year of watching climbing documentaries so this should be up my street.
Yes I've seen all those you mention, Delicatessen is similar to Micmacs, totally barmy.
I'll name a few that come straight to mind (English titles), some are well known, others less so. And no doubt you've seen some;
Downfall
Parasite
The Skin I Live In
Oldboy
Memories of Murder
The Handmaiden
I Saw the Devil
Roma
The Secret in Their Eyes
Wild Tales
Loveless
Edit to add - Call me by Your Name

Pan’s Labyrinth was a quiz question on tv yesterday. Re: Del Torro.
I’d never heard of it but will try and find it.
I love foreign language films. They seem to build a story at a slower pace to British and American shows.
Spanish.
The body
Volver
French
36
Jean de Florette and its sequel Manon Des Sources
La Gloire de mon Pere sequelled by Le Chateau de ma Mere
Amelie and also MicMacs, both already mentioned above.
Argentinian
The Secret In Their Eyes.
German
Das Boot
Heimat, mentioned above, was a brilliant series that was dragged out over too many episodes.

This thread has reminded me I really need to watch Parasite. Heard it's excellent!
"Jean de Florette and its sequel Manon Des Sources
La Gloire de mon Pere sequelled by Le Chateau de ma Mere"
I've never been sure about watching the above four, as they strike me as being too old-fashioned: am I being unreasonable?

L'aimes Du Pont Neuf is a good French film with subtitles though I bet its 20 years since I last watched it so a bit sketchy on the detail

Good call on Lives of Others, great film. And Parasite, not exactly what I was expecting but very enjoyable.
I’d also recommend Danish film Festen / The Celebration, very dark but brilliant.

Cheers. I’ve definitely seen that but looking back at it I can’t for the life of me remember it.
The Hunt - is another good Danish film.

All books by Marcel Pagnol. Certainly set in the past but the stories are timeless and all of them, especially Manon, end with a superb twist.

Watched La Haine on the recommendation of a number of people on this very forum and thought it was bloody brilliant. Loved it.
To add to the foreign language recommendations, City Of God (2002) is incredible and one of the best films I've seen in any language.

I have never seen a bad or even a middling film by Paolo Sorrentino, "The Consequences of Love" is high in my all time favourites. Toni Servillo is an incredible actor and the pair are equally as brilliant in "Il Divo" and also "The Great Beauty"
And while I expect anyone with an interest in film will have seen a number of films by Akira Kurosawa, for those who haven't it is a direction of inquisitiveness that shouldn't disappoint

John Cazale of “The Conversation” only had a short film career. He appeared in only 5 feature films. All of these films(The Godfather, The Godfather part 2, The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon, and The Deer Hunter) we’re nominated for Best Picture Oscars. The two Godfather films and The Deer Hunter won.
Sadly Cazale died of cancer during the post production of The Deer Hunter and almost didn’t appear in the cast because of difficulties getting him(a terminally ill man) insured during filming.

Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources are fantastic films that personally I would highly recommend.
La Gloire de mon Pere and Le Chateau de ma Mere are autobiographical, recollections from Marcel Pagnol’s childhood. As such there’s no plot, and while there’s some nice cinematography, I wouldn’t put them in the same league as the first two.

I’ll give them a shout anyway.
Italian:

Cinema Paradiso.

Yes. Great story, acting, soundtrack and scenery. Other Spanish language films that come to mind are ‘mar adentro’ and ‘amores perros ‘. Pedro Almodovar is a good director to look for I think
