Can JBG re-find his best form?

One of my favourite Burnley players over the last 4 years and so important for our creative attacking options and performance.
Let’s all hope he can get back to full match fitness and regain his attacking confidence.
We’re all behind you Johann, take that defender on and give Brighton hell tomorrow.

He was good vs city. It’s just staying fit for JBG. A good quality premier league player, especially on the right. He would have scored/assisted a huge number of goals if he would have stayed fit for us over the years.

Sadly he is better on the left hand side, where I have seen him play some great games. Any team who have done their research on him will know he likes to cut in every time he gets it on the right side, so for any PL full back he is going to be easy to mark. He is an under rated player-lets hope some of his best games are still ahead of him. Would like to see him and Dwight switch wings ocasionally which is rarely seen during a game

He could if tactics instruct him to.
Against City I was tearing my hair out watching him and Dwight passing backwards and safe as a first option.
What do we gain for passing backwards all the way to Pope. 5 seconds possession until Pope launches it?
Fine the wingers a grand everytime they go backwards and we will have the best wingers in the league.
They need to give the defence a breather from time to time. Not give it them straight back.

Both JBG and Brady stifle our forward movement. Left footed wingers playing on the right, neither have the pace or trickery to beat a man on the inside, nor do they possess a right foot to put a cross in if they reach the by line. Their only movement is either a pass backwards or inside, or if far enough forward, turn back onto their left foot to put a cross in. I am struggling to recall a single cross from either of them that have created a decent chance for the strikers. Inverted wide players are fine if they are good enough - Grealish for Villa, Salah for Liverpool as 2 examples of very effective "wrong side" players, our 2 unfortunately offer very little and as we have Dwight on the left in good form we are stuck with them, unless we play Brownhill wider of Cork and Westwood in the middle.

In answer to the (quite justified) opinion of Herts, JBG and Lowton do seem to play well together when both are on top form. No reason why JBG can’t cut inside and then deliver a pinpoint cross with the option of Lowton outside him (who seems to have improved his crossing) it can be made to work.
Obviously when Lowton is attacking one of our midfield players needs to drop back to cover him.

That approach is particularly frustrating when we aren’t winning first or second balls and there is little hold up from the front two. The one thing passing it back and then going long does allow, is time for the front two to position themselves.
It’s quite a poor tactic to watch when it’s not working and for a team that often plays to percentages, it surprises me that we persist with it, quite as much as we do.

Two things everybody grew up with in football were to pass to your better players and pass to players in better positions than you.
It's quite basic.

Nope, good, technical player on his day. Doesn’t look to have recovered mentally and this is affecting amongst other things his covering ability for the fullback.

I don't know what you mean when you say 'he doesn't look to have recovered mentally'. Is it based on something you've read on here previously or a special insight you have into detecting a person's psyche on a football pitch?

Needs to find form and fitness. Wednesday was a positive fitness-wise.
Needs something to give him some confidence; a goal or assist would do him the world of good.

I'm a fan of his and I have felt for him with his constant injury woes, especially following the awful tackle in the Lincoln game which actually went unpunished. He's been a brilliant, bargain signing and had some great moments in a Burnley shirt, but I (sadly) wouldn't have been extending his contract as I feel he's clearly lost something and imo is nowhere near the player he was. SD however did choose to extend his contract, so I hope I'm proved wrong.

If fit, Brownhill would be a much better option than JBG

JBG is a cracking prospect when firing. Seems to be lacking confidence though at the moment and who could blame him after his awful run of injuries. Would like to see him run at players more but being on the right does limit him somewhat. I'd like to see him play behind a striker at some point. Always thought he could offer more in there or in a sort of roaming role.

Hope he can regain his form and fitness, otherwise we'll have squandered valuable funds by extending his contract, it's possible now he knows his immediate future is secure that'll he'll be able to settle down at last, and get a decent run in the team, it can't be helpful when you're constantly in and out of the side for various reasons.
I'm one of those who's sceptical about giving him an extension, but it's done now, so all we can do is get behind him, and hope he can answer his critics in the best possible manner.

Just watch him, losing 60/40s even 70/30s, favours his movement to support his injuries.
I have no special insight other than having an ACL repaired, and having to come back into sport from that. It took an age for someone to realise that it wasn’t the injury it was the smell of grass/dirt that unsettled me. I was face down in pain, and that’s what I was smelling. So every time I smelt it subconsciously I was reliving the injury and changing my behaviour accordingly.
You can often repair a body, the mind in the whole remains a mystery

Would love him to as on his day he's an exciting player but can't see it.
Unfortunately for him and the team seems he's just too injury prone and not a quick healer which can't help but affect a players confidence.

A bit harsh calling him injury prone with the tackles he has received for his main injuries.
He has taken on some shockers.

It wasn't meant as a criticism, an injury is an injury however it is caused.

Since the 2018 world Cup he has not been the same. Lost a yard too. He still has a part to play but will never be what he was the first 18 months, he was unplayable at times back then.

I’m still convinced that Lowton can help JBG open up our right sided attacking options especially against the bottom half PL teams. JBG and Lowton definitely do have a good understanding (overlapping/moving inside) between each other.
Maybe Dyche could give Lowton more licence to attack by ensuring he has adequate defensive cover when he moves forward to support JBG.

Got to disagree there, every time I have seen JBG have a great game it’s come on the right. He definitely used to have the ability to on occasion get on the outside of the full back and cross with his right, which meant he had a bit of unpredictability in comparison with say Brady who only uses his right foot to stand on. Let’s hope he can get back to that.

I agree with you re JBG on the right, that is where all his good games have come from. However, must disagree on Brady’s right foot which might not be his strongest but he is not that weak on it and has scored two superb goals from outside the box with his right foot.

Really pleased for JBG. Always liked him and did have doubts about whether he could be relied upon again.
One swallow and all that, but a huge step in the right direction. Everything crossed he can stay fit now.

I hope he can stay fit. If him and Lowton and can continue like that and we can get Taylor and Mcneil firing on the left, our forwards should get a wealth of chances.

That second half was a stark contrast with his recent performances. The goal really seem to give him a lift and he was so positive and direct in the second half. Hope he keeps it up because we’re a different side when our attacking players play like that.

His 1st half performance was woeful. He should improve with a run of games, his 2nd half performance was miles better.

Great that he got another 90 minutes in. The difference between him and Brady with a run of games is that he can offer more. Brady gets a run of games in but doesn’t really contribute enough on the pitch. 2nd half today, with the tweak in shape, he was much more involved and a real creative threat. Also worth noting he did some great defensive work too at times.

He was instrumental in the second half improvement. Moved more centrally, got on the ball and worked well in tandem with Lowton. Looked a much better player.

Sky sports put up a stat early on in the game saying that Westwood had created most of our chances this season which surprised me. There's a chance JBG overtook him during the course of the game though

2 in 2 for Guddy now, and he's finished them both expertly, here's to a good run in the side for the rest of the campaign, because these last couple of weeks have shown exactly what he can bring to our attack.

He’s pure class. Right hand side looks more dangerous than the left now!!! As good as Pieters has been, it will be interesting to see how we can play when Charlie is back to give the drive down the left as well.
