I thought it was about 10 seconds, I am not sure. The Brighton keeper had it in his hands for 22 seconds once in the first half, it was just after Vydra had brilliantly controlled a long pass over his head.

Six seconds, never penalised though.

They can hold on to it for as long as they are able to chant kebaddi with just a single breath without inhaling

It's been 6 seconds for ages, which is why some will bounce it a few times and then eventually drop it at their feet.

Six seconds!!!. Is this another law that’s still in place but refs totally ignore implementing it or has it changed?

Bouncing it doesn’t make a difference, it’s six seconds from when they get hold of it to when they release it into play. They can’t just bounce it and start the six seconds again.

This law was devised to get the ball back into play quicker thereby making the game more exciting to watch. The lawmakers have obviously realised people will spend ridiculous amounts of money watching the game as it is so there is no need to enforce it.

I just figured that's why they all bounced it tbh.

The 6 second law has been around since 98, but it's rarely enforced unless the keeper is properly taking the mick.

So this rule should be filed under the other rules refs ignore nowadays such as dissent, no longer booking for simulation in the box or anywhere else, stopping quick free kicks by kicking or running away with the ball or obstructing a quick kick.

If anyone has recorded the game then right at the beginning, probably first 90 seconds, their keeper has the ball in his hands for what seemed an eternity. I think it was longer than the 22 seconds and certainly long enough to create the first discussion of the game in our house. The question I posed was firstly, ' is there a rule?; What is it? and if there isn't a rule why have I just seen West Ham's keeper, Fabianski, booked for time wasting?

Not sure Nick Pope observes this rule and Tom Heaton certainly didn’t.

The 6 seconds is reset as soon as the previous 6 seconds has elapsed.

To be fair though 6 seconds isn’t really enough time for, say, a goalkeeper to collect a corner and the defending team to get up the pitch and into position to receive the ball.

It can be a bit frustrating at times but it’s not in the same league as time wasting at goal kicks. And I think it’s fair to say that Pope, with his fake short pass, is an artist in this field.

I think they should also look at when a ball is grounded for a goal kick, you have 10 seconds to kick it. It winds me up no end when the centre halves are 5 feet away to receive a short goal kick, the keeper decides against it and waves Every body up the pitch and 're spots the ball. I know Pope did it against Villa, but it's annoying to watch..

Exactly. 6 seconds was a ridiculously short time and therefore unenforceable. If they had made it 12 seconds it might have been taken notice of.

I remember a game once - not in the PL - where we were chasing the game (drawing or 1 down) with 30 seconds left of injury time when the goalkeeper picked the ball up. He still had it in his hands when the ref blew for full time.

Don't forget the classic 'falling to the ground clutching the ball tightly to the chest routine'

That adds at least another 10 seconds whilst the Keeper recovers fron his exertions.

And inwardly we all think 'Good lad, stay down Popey'. Come on, admit it!

Don't let the VAR people know about this rule......

The only time I can ever recall this rule being enforced, was in the early 80’s at St. James Park Newcastle. Stevenson was penalised, indirect free kick to them, obviously inside the box, someone rolled it to Keegan, who smashed it into the roof of the net.

We should be asking the refs this question, i doubt if many will know the answer?

They did away with the four steps rule because Alex Stepney was allowed five, six and sometimes seven steps when he played for Manure.

People complained, but rather than punish Stepney, they changed the rule.

Must admit, it's so frustrating to watch rules being ignored. The one that really annoys me is opposition players either carrying or kicking the ball away at free kicks. It's obvious that it's to give their side to to arrange their defence, yet refs rarely do anything about it.

A few seasons ago there was obviously an edict from the FA that this was an area to focus on for refs. Thetree were a couple of free kicks awarded for keepers holding on for more than 6 seconds. You then got forwards stood in front of keepers counting 6 on their fingers and screaming at refs to award a free kick. As with many things in football this fad was soon replaced with a crackdown on something else. I did notice the Brighton keeper was particularly bad yesterday.
