How many points will we finish on
Made a conservative, pessimistic prediction that we will get another 14 points from our remaining 15 games.
That would take us to bang on 40 which should be more than enough this year.
Although as Saturday showed, I don't even think home advantage is a thing any more. So the likes of Wolves, Fulham and Sheffield United shouldn't be intimidating at all and I didn't have us down to win any of those three in my prediction.
If we get 4 points from this weeks games you would like to think we are there anyway.

Re: How many points will we finish on
On the Premier League Predictor I have us finishing in 14th place on 39 points.
West Brom, Sheff Utd & Fulham relegated.
City champions, United, Leicester and Liverpool completing the top 4.
5th Chelsea, 6th West Ham, 7th Spurs all getting into Europe (dependant on FA Cup winners).

Much depends on the injury situation. A lot of injuries will see us crawl to 38. Mostly fit gets us to 46.

Re: How many points will we finish on
Whilst no game is easy and experience will tell us that anyone can beat anyone in this league, I do tend to think that our record shows that we tend to do well and avoid relegation because we beat the teams at the bottom of the table. This comes down to our resilience and the ability to scrap games out and to stay in games where we need to.
I would therefore like to be a bit braver and say that I think we have a mid-table finish in us. Average 1.2 - 1.5 pts a game and we are down for a 44-48pt season.

Re: How many points will we finish on
Given our average per game thus far (and bearing in mind our awful start) we should easily achieve 43 points. Assuming for a moment we don’t have a run that is similar to our first 8 games then that total could be much nearer 50. This is why I am bored to death with the obsession with ‘making sure we are safe’ and ‘ avoiding defeat to Fulham at all costs’. After our first win (and we often get off to a slow start) we have at no point looked like a relegation team.
Dare I suggest that some on this board be a little more confident and stop talking relegation every season? We are an established PL side (which again some seem to have difficulty accepting) so why don’t we stop thinking at the start of every season ‘17th will do’?

Anything more than the bottom 3 will be fine but being safe 10 games from season end would be better for my heart!
I'll go for 38

Re: How many points will we finish on
38 for me too, as long as we win the right games too - against the likes of Fulham, West Brom and the teams around us, we'll be OK. I think the bottom three is already sorted out. Injuries and the lack of depth in the squad will hinder us - but 4 more wins is easily doable.
Re: How many points will we finish on
Tend to go with those who say more than the bottom three
but to ease the nerves and worry would go with JohnMac's view
being safe with 10 games to go.
So 35/36 points with 8 or so games to go
and 42 at the end.
Just don't lose to Fulham and West Brom.

As long as we get 36-37 points it doesn't really matter if we lose to Fulham and West Brom.
I think we'll end up on 42.

To be fair I don't think it is just us, you could mark 10/11 teams in Premier League whose first objective each season is to get to 40 points.houseboy wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 1:12 pmGiven our average per game thus far (and bearing in mind our awful start) we should easily achieve 43 points. Wasn't it Stan who used to say in First Division/Championship let's just get to 50 points and then see where we are.

Re: How many points will we finish on
Yes I think he did. What I say sometimes shouldn’t be taken too literally but I do think that there is an extreme ‘we are not worthy’ attitude by some. The idea of let’s get to X number of points then see how things are is world away from the ‘17th will do me’ attitude of some. We should now be thinking at the start of a season ‘let’s see how high we can finish’ rather than cringing in a corner saying ‘oh I do hope we can finish out if the bottom three, that would be wonderful’. We should now be expecting more, really, from an established PL club. I’m not saying Champions-league or even Europe but we should be looking at a top ten finish, maybe not in actuality but certainly in expectation. If we don’t life will start getting exceedingly dull if the limit of your expectations is simply not to fail. You get absolutely nowhere in life by doing the bare minimum.claretburns wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 2:11 pmTo be fair I don't think it is just us, you could mark 10/11 teams in Premier League whose first objective each season is to get to 40 points.

If you claim we are an established premier league side, how many Premier League sides would you say have been relegated in recent years ?
There is a huge difference between getting to 40 points then seeing where we can finish rather than trying to get 40. It is like those who trot out aiming for 17th place
Re: How many points will we finish on
I calculated 39 before the Brighton game. I was being harsh. I predicted a win v Brighton and a draw v Palace so I am still on course. I reckoned on 6 points front the next 2 games but nothing from the following 4,so 6 points from 6 games let's just see

Re: How many points will we finish on
As I said in another post there is a huge difference saying let’s get to X number of points etc than saying 17th will do. My point is too many people start the season with the survival first mind set when we should be thinking okay, how high can we finish. If you plan to achieve the minimum then often that’s all you will achieve. We just need to be balanced between being realistic and over cautious. A bit more optimism wouldn’t go amiss.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 3:20 pmIf you claim we are an established premier league side, how many Premier League sides would you say have been relegated in recent years ?

As for your first point yes lots have been relegated but it’s a bit like saying you can’t be an established human being because one day you’ll die. Not really an argument in my opinion. Man Utd are established but relegation, however unlikely, is possible (it has happened before).

Re: How many points will we finish on
Last year our 10th position required 54 points. and whilst it has been as low as 45pts in the last 5 years, we could end up in the ballpark.
At week 24 last year there were 4 teams all on 30pts which was 10th but separated on GD.
I look at 10th and see us 8pts off Arsenal (although we have a game in hand which could either keep us 8pts off or reduce to 7 or 5 if we draw or beat fulham).
Although not impossible, it will be interesting to see what the table looks like as I think it's a tough ask for 10th even if we can put a run together. If we can hit 1.5pts per game at 48, the teams 6th to 10 need the following points return
6th - WHU = 9pts from 15 games
7th - Everton 11pts from 16 games
8th - Villa 12pts from 16 games
9th - Spurs 12pts from 15 games
10th - Arsenal 14pts from 14 games
Not saying 48pts is what we will achieve but I suspect that given the above, it may well be more required and thefore even less likely of a top 10 finish.

Re: How many points will we finish on
You're seriously suggesting we'll only pick up 1 point from a possible 42, even with Mee's absence we'll pick up points, don't you remember he missed several games at the tail end of last season, and we still picked up points in those fixtures, of course he's important, but one player doesn't a team make.
Anyway he at worst will only miss the next 2 games, so you can stop waving the white flag.
Now if you believe in symmetry we'll finish on 40 points, because in the past few seasons our final totals have been as follows, 40, 54, 40, 54.
So assuming that pattern continues our total this season will be 40, I can actually see us bettering that, but not by a huge margin.

Re: How many points will we finish on
After Sunday's win all but secured our top flight status it seems fitting to bump this thread again.
So 5 games remaining I'll go for the following outcomes.
WHU (H) I think this is a fixture we can take at least a point from, their form isn't great, and they're suffering an injury crisis. (1)
Fulham (a) This did appear to be a crunch battle until the weekend, but we could probably even afford to lose this now and still stay up easily, however we won't. (3)
Leeds (H) Don't know why but I've go a bad feeling about this game (0)
Liverpool (H) I actually think this is a game we can get a result from, Their form is erratic to say the least, and we should take confidence from our last 2 results against them (1)
Sheff Utd (a) TBH it depends how motivated we are on the day, if we turn up then we are perfectly capable of all 3 points, I'll go with us turning up (3)
And that would leave us on 44 points, which considering our shocking start to the campaign wouldn't be a bad return, and that could well be enough to place us above Southampton, Newcastle & Brighton given their tough looking run-in's.

I'm going with at least 42 which is miraculous considering the horrific start to the season. Not a pretty season but a tremendous achievement from SD and the squad.

I think that's optimistic TBH, but we can definitely give Liverpool a run for their money, we've drawn at Anfield, and if JBG had shot a couple of inches lower we'd have won, then we did win breaking their long unbeaten run, so we certainly shouldn't be overawed by Liverpool despite their star-studded squad. we've shown we can compete with them on any given day.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 27, 2021 8:34 amI fancy us to win 3 or 4 of the West Ham, Fulham, Leeds and Sheff Utd games.

And that would some finale to a weird season if we could defeat the defending champions in our final home game, and possibly even with fans in attendance to boot.

This is looking like our best ever performance in this league given who we have signed in the last two seasons and the only thing somewhat of a surprise is how badly we have done against the bottom six. Had we performed as we normally do we would have had a cracking season. With the league as is presently points off the bottom six with two games to play 8 points from 10 games two to play. Mid table 6 24 points from 11 games one to play, top 7 4 points from 12 games two to play
Last season we took 26 points from the final bottom 6 18 from mid table 6 teams and 10 from top 7.
