Not football - related, I know, but if the mods could just let this link air for a few hours it would be much appreciated.

A truly horrendous story but again, thank God, people are rallying round.

It doesn't half put things into perspective.

There's a "Justgiving" link for any other outdoor types who might like to help.

The gut-wrenching thing is that the two campers who were saved were breaking Covid rules by being there.

Always sad to read these kind of appeals, but they tend to hit home even more when sustained while trying to help someone else.

In my teens I was part of the Eskdale Mountain rescue team and was always amazed at the number of idiots that take mountains for granted. I always remember one group who had been down at Wasdale on a sunny day and decided to climb Sca Fell in trainers and T shirts. They got past Sty Head Tarn en-route and the weather changed. Needless to say they got hypothermia fairly quickly and needed assistance off the mountain. Unbelievable.
I climbed Snowdon in the lockdown break last year via the Crib Goch route and there were a few numpties on the top dressed in lightweight gear, shivering away. :?

Best wishes to him. Noble folk doing a tremendous job for free and getting very little recognition.
As with the NHS if they had to pay it might change their idea of a day out.

Pity that they couldn't be charged with endangering human life or something similar. To**ers.

That's correct. Absolutely awful what's happened to this guy, but breaching Covid rules is only ever a smallish fine for a first offence. You can't punish somebody for a chain of events following that.

Obviously a very sad scenario but how does this all equate with what others are doing? Paul Scholes is fined for going hill walking with three friends. Amanda Holden is chastised for dashing down to see her parents in Cornwall. Yet I, living in Westbourne, Bournemouth, cannot take a daily walk along the seafront on account of the multitudes who drive down here on a daily basis. the car parks were initially closed last year but are now fully opened and packed.

Why can't they be charged with endangering of life due to illegal actions? If the Mountain Rescue Team had left them there due to the fact they were breaking lockdown laws then they would have been castigated....these 2 were absolutely at fault for this....I hope they get lynched....

That’s quite an incendiary comment Claretdiver. You really think it would be helpful to have a bunch of vigilante thugs go round to the homes of individuals not charged with a crime, drag them out into the street and hang them from a tree?

Yup, 2 men from different cities broke lockdown rules that resulted in a volunteer who had to 'rescue' said idiots who should never have been there and has now suffered life changing injuries as a result....don't care what happens to them....sorry, not sorry....

It’s an emotive story due to the injuries sustained. But that needs separating from the offence of breaching lockdown travel rules.

If there was no pandemic, they’d still have gone camping, got stuck and he’d have bravely gone out to rescue them as I imagine he did quite often at this time of year.

The fact they broke lockdown rules is as relevant as if they’d have driven an uninsured car to get there. In both situations, they ‘shouldn’t have been there’. Thankfully we still have law rather than lynchings. I live quite close to the Peak District, the Mountain Rescue guys do a really amazing job.

They can’t be charged with ‘endangering of life due to illegal actions’ because you’ve just made it up.

That's not important, Jakubclaret is busy arranging a phone poll to decide on their punishment.

Nearly at 400k now. I suspect after being highlighted on BBC breakfast it won’t be long until it’s well past that.

Over £550k in two days. The British public are truly remarkable when someone is in trouble.
