My dad was on about random things you don’t see in the game anymore old scoreboards, 10 minute half time etc.

What season was added time announced/shown to the fans in the ground? It used to be the referees discretion with frantic whistling from the longside being a memory in the late 80’s and early 90’s.

Also what season did teams start coming out of the tunnel together?

The first time i remember it was an away game at Northampton towards the end of the 97/98 season. We were hanging on to a 1-0 lead and from out of nowhere there was an announcement about added time.

I thought they started by announcing it to the crowd over the tannoy before they started holding up on the board.

I think it was around the time that GM Fitted Furniture Limited came into business.

Yeah, I seem to recall there's been an incident or we'd been time wasting and Northampton weren't happy. I think they were pushing for promotion so would have been a costly defeat for them.

When they announced the stoppage time we just thought the stadium announcer had gone rogue and decided how much added time there should be.

That day out was one of my favourite away days for various reasons so little details about it stuck in my mind.

Late 70’s or early 80’s at a guess.

West Germany goalkeeper, Sepp Maier, was one I recall for being one of the first to wear gloves. So, probably around 1974 World Cup.
Not knowing how much added time there was probably highlighted for me at Wembley '94. Even though they were down to 9 men it seemed to go on for ever.

Football nostalgia.......the blokes who used to walk around the side of the pitch selling programmes, sweets and stuff out of a wooden tray, a bit like a cinema usherette selling ice cream in the interval. Always bought a pack of Stimorol!! Did I imagine it or did that really happen? I can also recall the half time scores from other games being shown by wooden placards rather like a village green cricket scoreboard! Happy days!! UTC EAC

The first known manufacturing of goalkeeper gloves occurred in 1885. Sixty-three years later, Carrizo began wearing gloves for matches. By the 1960s, the trend of goalie gloves was more commonplace and even England's Gordon Banks wore them as the Three Lions lifted the World Cup trophy in 1966.

I think you are right that Gordon Banks wore gloves in '66 but they resembled nothing like the sort that became commonplace in later years. They were very thin much like the ones I associate with morning suits at a wedding. Adam.Blacklaw wore them when the conditions were wet.

Did we used to clap the ball boys before the teams ran out? I'm sure i can remember it in the early 90s, they'd all run to the centre circle and applaud the crowd and then scatter to their positions.

Yes that happened. I think it started because the ball boys were more popular than the players at the time.

Going back quite a while, team changes to the printed line-ups in the match programme, were announced over the tannoy about 10 mins. before kick-off. When Blackpool played during Stanley Matthews time attendances would increase just to see Matthews and then came the announcement, followed by a huge groan,.'and at No7 for Blackpool Mandy Hill replaces Stanley Matthews'.

Definitely they came out first remember as one of my pals was one in the 90’s. He once got told off for flicking a gesture to West Brom fans when we scored!

I can answer the one about added time and it was introduced part way through the 1997/98 season in the Football League but the Premier League didn't use it until the following season.

Regarding ball boys waving from the centre circle. It started in 1974.The game was against Leeds I think. The reason it started was because we had to wave at Ted Heath who was officially opening the Bob Lord Stand and so we were told to wave to the other three ends of the ground. How do I know? I was one of the ball boys.

What was the last ground that had half-time scoreboards .... A - 0-0, B - 2-1, C 1-0 .. etc, matching up with the games in the match programme ?
When did the semi-circles disappear behind the goals at Goodison Park ?
When did they stop planting flower-beds behind the goals at Eastville ?

I don't know any of these, asking for a friend !

Late 80's couldn't afford proper goalie gloves. Used these glue gloves (woolly gloves with lines of glue criss-crossing palm and fingers). Great in dry weather, but bobbins in wet.

I had some purpose made goalkeeper gloves in 68. They were green and made from thin cotton. I think Peter Bonetti promoted them.
Not too long after that the gloves with pimpled rubber on the fingers, palms and back of the hands came out. They were absolutely rubbish.
Like most keepers I just used to play in my bare hands and spit on my palms to get a better grip.

It was always amusing when an outfield player took over the position of goalkeeper after an injury or sending off. The jersey was far too big and some of their attempts at goal kicks were laughable, especially on a heavy pitch.
