I au check a documentary on the nuclear bombs dropped on Japan. American scientists were on the ground within weeks to document the effects of the population. They were treated as large experiment by the US. Whilst it did save some lives by stopping the war early. It’s a disgrace on the human race how the Japanese were used as an experiment

So perhaps we should reduce the money given to the less fortunate and build a new space station for 5 people to live on.

I get the sentiment but without moon / mars landings we wouldn’t have memory foam, cordless power tools, ear thermometers, CAT scanners or water filters. Either those whole inventions, or an improvement of them, originated in space.

Who knows, maybe the Rover will bring back some previously unknown material that will turn out to cure cancer, or perfect carbon recovery? Can’t just splash all private sector cash on the homeless, in need though they are.

Small point, nasa spent millions creating the paper mate pen so it worked in space. The Russians used a pencil. Memory foam is a pain in the arse as it’s to hot to sleep on, I have one.
We would have invented many of those anyway.

We waste millions and millions, but it’s your right to argue it’s better spent on crap rather than than help the homeless.

The Space Programme was also the springboard for the development of micro electronics which in turn has provided employment for millions of people and also benefits in terms of products that we all use today like the two inch sized ECG heart monitor that keeps a check on my ticker. Every home should have one btw.

The invasion of the Japanese main islands would’ve been catastrophic.

KIA for the Allies alone was estimated to be upwards of 1 million. That’s not including casualties. Planners had earmarked 1 million British serviceman to take part, and 5 million Americans.

The two nuclear bombings were horrific, but brought the war to a close by upwards of at least 2 years, and saved hundreds of thousands of lives- that’s Allied, AND Japanese civilian and military.

Wonder if they used the same location as they did for the moon landings, except this time using red dirt instead?

Would be good if they offered it as part of a Universal backlot tour in future.

If you read the real history of the war in Japan, you will realise that Japan would never have gone to war in the first place if it hadn't been for American sanctions that were starving the country. They felt that they were left with no choice.

That's not to say that I support the Japanese response, but as usual 'Bully Boy' America was telling other countries what they could, and couldn't do.

Nothing changes.

Should the American Government be funding expeditions of this nature, is it the best use of their money?

This is a political thread that is supporting the governments use of tax revenue and should be shutdown!!!

I’m not keen on Nuclear at all but if those bombs hadn’t been dropped many more lives would have been lost. The barbaric regime and mentality was responsible for this outcome.

I also think money is wasted on ridiculous projects including things line The Milenium Dome and HS2 when the are better causes such as the NHS and the homeless but I think we owe to mankind and future generations to explore space.

Sorry Boss, but if really think that any money saved from exploration would be used for good causes, then you live in cloud cuckoo land. It would undoubtably used to fund more wars, so space exploration is probably saving lives after all.

Why we’re searching for life on other planets is completely beyond me. Yes fantastic find water on Mars. What you gonna do with it?. Send it to all those living in poverty who don’t have access to clean, safe water?.

The human race can do marvellous things. Space exploration achievements are incredible there’s no doubting that. But we really do need to realise what a magnificent planet our own is. Let’s look after it, look after the people on it, look after all the living things on it.

This is a myth. The danger of the graphite snapping and floating around zero gravity environments getting into equipment is too great, so it's not true.
