Some rare colour footage of Burnley vs Manchester United at Turf Moor 19th April 1957 a Good Friday fixture

I lifted this via Facebook from the Clarets Bar pages.

The game was the first of three in four days against the Champions Elect, the Busby Babes. Burnley played Manchester City at home the day after
and then United on Easter Monday at Old Trafford. United won the league by some distance ( 8 points ) and scored 103 goals.

Burnley lost all three of those fixtures, 1 - 3, 0 -3 and 0 - 2 respectively. Interestingly the Clarets built their success in this period on their mean defence, so to concede three goals in a match was unusual and especially vs City who were relegation candidates. It was Burnley's first home loss of the season, Burnley finished seventh, 18 points behind Man Utd., scoring only 56 goals but conceding four fewer.

The team was McDonald Angus (18 at the time) Winton Seith Adamson Miller (20) Newlands Jimmy Mac. Shackleton Cheeseborough and Pilkington

It was the same team the day after and on Monday Lawson replaced Shackleton.

The attendances were interesting, 37,832 Burnley' highest home attendance of the season, the day after it was down to 16746 for the City game and the week after only 12,048 for the last home game vs Spurs.

Anybody know the history of the CFS supports? They are in the stand on the video. Later Ray Pointer ran into one when they weren’t. Not being an engineer I’d guess they took the crowd back a bit and exposed them. Because of Pointers accident were they then wrapped or moved again?

Huw.....the answer to your question is the perimeter wall was moved back at the end of the 1960/61 season. For a more detailed explanation, take a look at the Burnley FC in Pictures thread (Page 12 about two-thirds of the way down).

Sam Hanna was my woodwork teacher at BGS. Nice guy but I hated woodwork

I was in the CFS for that United game directly behind the goal; they were head and shoulders above us.

Does anyone think it's possible to attract that many fans again? Supposing we had a new stadium of course.

I knew it had been discussed before

I was on the game, being ten years old at the time. It brings back incredible memories of the time: this was the team I first knew, McDonald, Seith, Newlands, Pilky etc. little did I know what was round the corner.
Sam Hannah also taught me woodwork in my last year at the old Grammer School in town: I remember we had to walk down from the school to a small building in the he center somewhere for our woodwork lessons. I was useless at the subject and Sam once held up one of my poorer efforts to show the rest of the class saying "In all my years of teaching woodwork at Burnley Grammer School, I have never seen anything as bad as that". I felt quite proud in a strange sort of way.

Vino, can you remember if United had already won the title when they turned up for this match?

Also did you also go to the City game the day after? How come they lost only their second home match to such lowly opponents?

They hadn't - was still possible for three teams to pass them

Hannah taught me woodwork at BGS too and I was useless. Maybe it was him then.

I've no intention of hijacking the thread, but I found your last sentence amusing. I'm around your age and back in those days it wasn't unusual for a teacher to chastise a pupil for whatever reason. These days it would be looked upon with total shock! Teacher would probably be fired and sentenced to 10 years hard labour, the pupil would spend the next decades in intense therapy.

Sounds like you are same age as me and about the same skill level me at woodwork!!!! Maybe we tied last. Think I got 3% in one test

Not sure why you were doing woodwork at BGS, not the ideal preparation for the aspiring, upwardly mobile intelligentsia, however
