He needs to regain his form first.. Developed a worrying habit to keep turning inside or backwards rather than try and get down the outside like he does at his best.

He is a classic example of a over hyped footballer I'm afraid. He is limited to one foot, seriously lacks pace and as a result is one dimensional. Coaches watch videos of all opposing and like our tactics Dwight is eay to suss.
He has glimpses of brilliance but sadly not enough.

Have to agree with this. He's not done anything all season to warrant all the plaudits imo. Teams seem to have sussed that if you stick 2 players in front of him he sh1ts it and goes backwards

Dwight’ s a completely different player when he hasn’t got Wood and Barnes as a target to aim for, he has to find another way of hurting the opposition.

On last seasons form 35m absolute tops
On this seasons 20m absolute tops
He is extreamely 1 footed, no real pace, and his delivery hasnt been on point as much. He has also been losing the ball a lot more it seems, as he has been found out a bit.
Push him onto his right and he's infield with a negative backwards run/pass.
Saying that, as a team we havent created or scored much, so he probably looks less effective, and his stats will be effected.

Passing backwards or sideways is a nonsense tactic inspired by a mistaken belief that defence is the best form of attack
We need to play quicker to feet get Charlie up to overlap Dwight then we can create scoring chances
Hes not alone in the nonsense side pass when a forward pass is on Tarks and Ben do it constantly, allowing teams to reorganise their defence whilst we faff about wondering what to do ,usually following this with hoof ball upfield

As terrible as you are making him out to be, he's the only player in the squad who can take a man on, feel comfortable in possession next to other prem players.
He was the main reason we stopped up in his first half season, so he's worth far more than 50m to the club.
But let's bash the only youngster in the team, the ever present in a injury hit squad.
All because some fans got carried away with his valuation.

People need to understand football and how it works before criticising a player. Looks at what the other 9 outfield players are doing before pointing the finger at Dwight passing backwards. It’s all about movement and finding space. That’s why Dwight will drift inside to find that space himself and get on the ball, it’s then up to others to do the same to allow Dwight to pick a pass. You’re only as good as those around you and unfortunately those around don’t know the basics of finding and creating space. Kevin De Bryune is known for creating space and his passing ability is outstanding due to the runs that Sterling, Aguero, Jesus make amongst others.

What the hell do you expect him to do? Tell me a player who could just go and take on 2 defenders in front of them? Probably the guy from Wolves whose built like a brick house and runs like a cheetah!
No options ever around apart from when Taylor overlaps; front 2 never offer anything so can hardly put the ball to them and the midfield 2 play so so deep. Gotta feel for Dwight, he's been given the responsibility to do it all on his own these past 18 months after a blistering start to his career. Teams have figured us out. That isn't his fault, it's Dyche's! Put him in a decent side who play football and he'd be a very well liked cog.

Saved me a lot of time and effort there. The mere fact that opposition managers double/treble up on him shows how much of a threat he is. It's the lack of quality elsewhere in our squad to take advantage of him drawing players out of position and giving him options that is a concern.

Except that’s just not true. We often play backwards or sideways to minimise the risk of being caught in possession with our players in offensive positions. Much easier to take those risks when you have more talented players, but as Gareth Bale showed Tarkowski on Sunday, when more limited players attempt to play incisive passes it can often lead to punishment.

We haven't lost a player.
You could also factor in that in recent games when he looks up he sees Vydra (who despite his cult status among some) and accepts he is neither good enough or strong enough to get on the end of a cross and decides against putting the ball in.

Dwight is a very talented lad who has now been sussed by the opposition. They force him inside, where his refusal to use his right foot means the ball will go sideways or backwards. Being able to use either foot is a massive advantage as it opens up far more options.
A poster above referenced de Bruyne (who is a genius). Have a look at Diaz’s goal for City on Saturday. A pinpoint 40 yard ball with his left foot right on Dias’s head. I can’t believe that more emphasis is not placed on being able to use both feet in training. It makes players very one dimensional, which is Dwight’s current problem.

When previously you watched Robben did you ever think he wasn't going to cut inside and shoot
When previously you watched Giggs did you ever think he was going to use his right foot
When you currently watch Mahrez do you ever think he won't cut inside and try and shoot
Weird how McNeil has been sussed yet those 3 did the same thing week in week out and never been sussed

They were more skilful and crucially, far quicker than Dwight. He is not in that bracket. Do you not agree that Dwight would be a better/more effective player if he could/would use his right foot?

Of course he would be, but had he been as good with both feet we would have lost him by now, possibly even in the youth set up when clubs could just poach him due to our category standing back then.
When the player is right footed and doesn't use his left there isn't the same demand that the player should be using his left more.
As for the those players are faster, agree they are but the best defenders in the world still never sussed those out.

Crikey we are now comparing him with two world class players now and one fairly decent one! By all means defend the lad but try not to get carried away.
I don’t think people are just trying to bash the lad, they are pointing out his limitations and if people cannot see these, perhaps they need to remove the rose and claret and blue tinted spectacles?

He had so much pressure on him to be the main man for the team at such an early age. Possibly resulting in teams focusing on him to stop him.
Even when he turns Alexander-Arnold inside out you can hear Klopp shouting 'On his left!'.
The one-footedness appears to make him run around in circles quite a bit and when he isn't firing he passes backwards a lot.
But he is still young, and is often still our only outlet. He wasn't over-hyped, his crossing ability was/is first class, but a 19-21 year old should not have the responsibility of carrying a premier league team in the way he usually does.

I'm not sure pace ever mattered with him, it was the way he used to tease defenders with when he's putting a ball in, he'd jink it onto his left foot dummy a cross and run around the full back or whip in an early ball. I believe it's all confidence related, we need to back him, shame he's not roaring down the wing at the Turf with fans getting right behind him, but hopefully not long. His set pieces are still effective and, less we forget, he changed the Villa game, which is proving more and more to be a huge win. Honestly I don't support criticizing young players, we have so few come through, lets not lose faith in him now!
