floating ship - amazing image

This photo has been big news in Ireland. A murmuration of starlings in the shape of a bird.

Being able to float is a minimum requirement for a ship, surely :D

I of course have seen this many a time.

It can be a bugger for aiming the gunnery... :x

There was a question on QI a few years back with Stephen Fry which explained this phenomenon. He used the example of a sunset. Which although the sun was still visible to the naked eye. It had in fact long since set below the horizon.
All to do with the light bending in the air apparently.

Either that or it's being beamed up by little green men.

This link has film of it plus film of the starlings as well.

This looks like the same ship but apparently now off Banff near Aberdeen. The explanation seems different and doesn't look satisfactory as the ship seems relatively close to shore yet that would put the horizon rather high compared to the land.

There is one of a yacht that looks like our red ship. It's about fifteen rows down.
