Luke Bennett RIP

The name is not familiar to me but Luke Bennett was and a former player in our academy who had moved to Fylde. He's been trying to retrieve a ball at the training ground, using a pole which has hit a power cable.

Fylde have said: "It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we must share the tragic news that AFC Fylde youth player Luke Bennett has passed away at the age of 17.
Learning the news on Saturday evening has left us absolutely devastated and heartbroken. All our love goes out to Luke’s family and friends at this cruel and difficult time.

Above all, Luke was a kind, popular young man who was much loved by his teammates and coaches. He was somebody who could instantly light up a room with his bubbly personality. Then, on the field, he was a naturally gifted footballer who excelled every time he represented AFC Fylde.

The pain of Luke’s sudden and untimely passing will be felt by our football club, supporters and all who ever had the pleasure of knowing him.

Rest in peace, “Lukey B”. The memory of you will always be in our hearts.

Awful story and my thoughts are with his family and friends.

How awful. Brings back memories of the young lad Ben at Burnley retrieving the ball off the roof of the stand.

Horrendous and tragic.

Very similar to the incident involving Scott Arfield’s Falkirk team mate a few years back. Just awful.

Absolutely tragic news for a young lad who seemingly had the world at his feet.

RIP, young man and deepest condolences to Luke’s family and friends.

So very sad. 17 years old with everything to look forward to and then this. So reminiscent, as pointed out, of Scott Arfield's mate and then Ben Lee whose anniversary it is around now. RIP Luke.

Hi
My grandson plays with him at Fylde & the incident didn’t happen at the training ground it happened when he was having a kick about in Euxton near Chorley with 2 mates who were also injured.

I was walking along the canal yesterday and they have signs all the way along warning anglers about overhead wires - even when they are a fair distance away. And I suppose anglers are used to carrying poles and are more aware of what they are looking out for. Like Ben Lee on the Longside roof, there are dangers out there that we just don't intuitively see.

This is the first time I have heard of the Longside roof tragedy. I was living in Tokyo at the time. What happened exactly?

A ball was stuck on the roof. Ben went up to retrieve it and tragically fell through

What a sad, terrible accident.. heartbreaking for his family.

I remember the one with Ben Lee, really sticks in the mind. Also going to the next game and the clear perspex patch in the Longside roof. Horrible really, but it's good he's remembered so well.

Two players went up, the other was Jammy Rahman. We should have been playing at York on the following day but the game was postponed and move until later in the season.

just a quick update- Fylde Academy played their 3rd round tie away at Cambridge last night which Luke, 1st year scholar had been selected to play in. The score was 2-2 with about 5 mins to go when Fylde brought on another 1st year scholar who scored the winner. the boys have dedicated the game to Luke.

Chelsea away in 4th round. Well done boys & good luck.
