Ray Ternent

Dear Clarets
Hope you do not mind this post but I wonder if you can help?
I run the Southend United Ex Payers Association (SUEPA) which is part of the Southend United supporters group The Shrimpers Trust (of which I am a Board member)
SUEPA was created just over three years ago and, unlike the current team, has gone from strength to strength. We now have 304 ex player members and based on the criteria that all are alive, have agreed to be part of us (it's free) and we have their contact details, it is quite possible that we are the largest former players group in the country now. We do community work and help former players in need as well as doing the basic thing of re-connecting former players with each other, the club and the fans. Should you wish you can check us out on Facebook and Twitter.
Today we have just had join us Mike Harrison - that just leaves former Claret Ray Ternent (no relation to Stan of course) who has yet to join SUEPA from the team that played in one of our more famous matches in the early 1970's (a League Cup tie v Chelsea). We would dearly love to contact Ray to invite him to join SUEPA - can anyone please help?
I do recall seeing a picture of Ray at a former Burnley player funeral - I think it may have been Peter Noble in 2017 - but I cannot currently find the link to it again. Anyway, it is this that made me think that contacting yourselves might bring some reward as perhaps Ray (who would now be aged 72) lives in the Burney area (you were his first team though he ended his league playing days at Doncaster). We've had some luck in the past using fan forums, last week we managed to get in touch with a another former player via the Weymouth FC fans forum - running SUEPA can be a bit like being a detective.
Anyway, if anyone has any possible clues about how we might contact Ray do please either post on this forum or send us an email at suepassoc@gmail.com
There are perhaps not too many links between our two clubs (Colin Morris - one of our members - is one that does spring to mind) - playing Burnley is something we can only dream of at the moment (I was at the last game at Turf Moor between our two clubs in 2006).
Thanks in hope
Andy

Andy,

I’ve emailed someone who might be able to help you.

On the subject of players having played for both of us - just 14 this side of World War 2 and all, apart from Joe Loughran since Ray Ternent.

There is also one other connection. Our right back from the 1950s Dave Smith went on to become your manager.

I wish the thread had been called “ searching for Ray Ternent”.
I thought we’d lost another.

Andy,

Had a response. Someone is going to try and sort this for you.

Pleased that you knew Ray isn’t related to Stan, some on here don’t. But Ray was related to another former Burnley player, he and Ray Pointer were cousins.

I used to know Ray very well but lost touch when he went back to the north east.

Wow, went offline for an hour and returned to a great response, thank you all! In running SUEPA it's amazing to come across so many different folk who are interested and happy to help

Claret Tony that seems great news, look forward to hearing further, presumably via our email suepassoc@gmail.com If not maybe the Doncaster lead also mentioned is one to follow up

If we get a result I'll certainly let you all know.

HuwY - apols re the subject title, I can see what you mean

I am convinced that former player groups are a win-win for all concerned and you might be interested to know that, in conjunction with someone from the Blackpool FPA we have a proposal with the PFA to set up a national forum for former player groups. That it dovetails in with their work on dementia is one of the many reasons why this will be great if it gets the go ahead.

Interesting to see the link to players common to both clubs, four of them are already in SUEPA including Gary Parkinson - although he was only on loan with us for a short period I want to address the fact that it seems Southend are the only one of his former clubs not to actively get involved in the fund raising for his care so that's another initiative we'll try and sort

Anyway, thanks again all and I hope to hear news re Ray sometime soon

Cheers, Andy
PS I should just add that membership of SUEPA is totally free and always will be plus we keep all contact details 100% confidential.

I know Ray quite well through family members

Tony, if your contact for some reason does not work out, let me know and I will make contact.

Hi,
My parents know Ray & family very well. We used to go on family holidays with him when I was a nipper.
As far as I know he lives near Doncaster now (another of his former clubs). My dad has contact details if required.

I’m pleased to say that Andy at Southend has now received Ray Ternent’s phone number with Ray’s permission.

Up the clarets message board at its best .
Like the thread helping Woody from the south west achieve a Sunday lunch for his mum in the Nelson area.

There’s the Burnley Former Players Association which I’m assuming is our equivalent

Just to say that I've now spoken to Ray, great guy and had a good long chat. One memory he recalled was a Southend tour to Russia in 1970, the first Western team daft enough at the time to have gone there for decades! Ray recalled we played five games and got stuffed every time (so nothing changes as far as our team is concerned!)
Thanks to all for your help and comments, REALLY appreciated.
The SUEPA email is suepassoc@gmail.com if anyone has any questions and we are on Facebook/Twitter

I love seeing things like this on here.

Suepa, best of luck in your battle to avoid the drop. We know only too well, just what that is like!!

Great to see a result as quickly as that.

You've got two of our former young players at the moment. I note Richard Taylor isn't in the team just now but surprised that Shaun Hobson is, he was in that shocking youth team we had five years ago.

Threads like this show just how important football is.
Strip away the money at the top, the odd idiot, and at the heart of it is a passionate, caring, vibrant community of fans with a mutual respect and love of the game.

It makes seeing clubs like Bury go under all the more lamentable.
