As thread title, passed away at 97. Not many get the title of legendary but he does for me...

That’s really sad, I have just watched two full days of testing and they showed an old British GP when Mansell won. Was great listening to Murray.

The man who for me made Formula 1 interesting.
His commentary along with James Hunt was fantastic.
R.I.P. Murray.

I grew up with Walker commentating on F1, it was never the same after he retired.
A legend and by all accounts a proper gent with a great sense of humour.
RIP

Before becoming a commentator he worked in advertising and and is responsible for creating the slogans "Trill makes budgies bounce with health" and "Opal Fruits, made to make your mouth water". RIP Murray.

The Voice!
His ‘lump in my throat’ commentary as Damon Hill claimed the F1 Driver’s Championship in Japan, was legendary stuff.

Oh my word. Iconic commentator.
Will never forget him choking up as Hill won his first championship, his hurt when Shumacher took him out, or the commentary immediately after Senna’s death.
Rest in peace Murray. The voice of my childhood.

A good bat at 97, but I still feel sad at Murray's passing. A voice that defined sport

I lost interest in F1 after Murray retired. His passion had brought the sport to life, just as Peter Alliss had with golf.

I don’t even like f1 but he’s iconic even to me.
Literally associate the sound of f1 with him. The sign of a great commentator.

Around 20 years ago or so Mrs Sarum was on the train one morning on her way to work. Sitting in a section of 4 seats either side of the aisle she noticed that the man sitting just across the aisle from her had struck up a conversation with another passenger facing him. The two chaps were have a jolly old natter together, but it gradually became apparent that actually this was just an off the cuff conversation struck up by two complete strangers to each other.
Mrs Sarum had a feeling that she recognised one of the men's voices, but wasn't sure. Then, after a while, one of them casually asked the other what the other did for a living: "Oh, I'm a TV commentator: Formula One motor racing" replied Murray very pleasantly!

RIP Murray, a true great. Thanks for the memories.
Many may not know he always commentated standing up.
Off thread.
What a wonderful generation of commentators we had alongside Murray there was David Coleman(on anything), Bill McLaren(Rugby), Harry Carpenter( Boxing), Brian Moore(Football), Ron Pickering(Athletics). All of them adding to the occasion.

I always remember Murray for how he spoke so eloquently and passionately on the passing of,for me the greatest driver ever, Ayerton Senna at the head of the cancelled highlight program for the Imola race.
He broke the news Senna had died in the crash
