Makes a nice change

Post by Moorite » Sun Mar 14, 2021 9:02 pm

I've always taken great interest in looking on other fan forums and them talking about us.

I love reading how much they hate our style of play and how they are glad they aren't a Burnley fan because we play anti football.

I've noticed recently that everyone is saying how brilliant on the ball we are and how dangerous we are in the final third.

Maybe we are becoming everyone's favourite underdog?

And what's the one significant thing that's changed in recent games?

- Vydra.

Not disagreeing that Vydra has brought in positives, but there has been far more to it than that. The what SD used to call bouncebackability and think has a new buzzword for, that the players are able to demonstrate just when most clubs would be heading into tailspin is just bloody impressive... it is more than one mans effort and it starts at SD.

We aren't playing as frequently, so the lads aren't as knackered as they were.

Vydra has added to our game no doubt, but the biggest change has been the return of Chris Wood to lead the attack, as a pair they've looked effective together, and it can't be a coincidence that the whole team has started performing far better than they were only a few weeks ago.

Any change in style is down to the manager. He has possibly got lucky again, as he did moving Ben Mee to CB, and had Vydra forced upon him by circumstances but there is only one man at the club that tells them how to play.

Other fans talking nice about us goes under the radar because of the noise all the keyboard warriors make when we beat them.

I think it's about the pressing. Vydra and Brownhill are key but Sean seems to have changed his thinking. I remember a couple of games in the first Prem season when we did it with Tornado force.

Ben Mee was a centre half who was moved to left back. Sean moved him back to centre half.

It's been mainly Vydra. Look at our style of play when he plays. Look at how much improved Wood is when he plays. We look better, we play better, we're doing better. We all have our opinions and mine is that he's a signficant reason. Not missing anything. Someone mentioned pressing - again, something Vydra offers a lot of.

Vydra, Wood and Brownhill have benefited from a bit of a rest, now coming up against players who could well be a bit tired owing to the schedules.
it's cost us recently when we've looked lifeless, but now we seem to have increased energy.
Plus McNeil...absolutely on fire!

So Dwight McNeils return to top form has made less of an impact on the team than has Matej Vydra's recent starts?

Vydra has done well but to say that he has been the main influence on the team is just a little silly in "my opinion".

Your "silly, " my opinion. Perhaps the strong press has given Dwight a bit more space. long may it continue. It all makes sense! Loved the goal. If he can do it with his right foot into the right hand corner we can redevelop the ground with the revenue from his sale or the sale of 1 billion commemorative tea towels.

Barnes has moved out of the side; something I suggested a month ago, despite him playing better than Wood at the time. Incidentally we’ve started to play to Wood’s strengths now and Vydra is complimenting him brilliantly.

I think he's on about me. Vydra is quite clearly helping McNeil and also helping Wood and the midfield. He's making us play football on the ground and we're playing better and carving open more chances. To think otherwise is a bit silly "in my opinion".

Spot on. Vydra, like I said further up, is the the most significant reason why we've improved, improving McNeil as well.

I’d say it’s more the Wood/Vydra partnership than Vydra himself. He’s played quite a bit over the past 12 months, mainly with Jay Rod and they were a bit crap. Wood/Vydra is the first combo that actually looks like a proper partnership. Wood deserves far more credit. He’s the one that does the hardest job, sticking them in the net.

Apart from a couple of games where we were totally under par or where we’ve played some of the best teams in the world. Some of the performances have been very impressive, Brighton, Palace, Fulham (fa cup), Villa, 2nd half against West Ham, Arsenal and yesterday’s. I’m sure fans of other teams around us would swap our performances for their teams efforts. I really believe, given the right backing, plus keeping our manager, we could be a major force in this league.

It makes a nice change to wake up on a Sunday having picked up 3 points. Oh, and to read some positive posts on here. Oh and the other results to go our way too. Pretty much a perfect weekend!

We’ve had some good results and performances of late but I was starting to worry a bit! Hoping the lads get some rest now, ready to put on a similar performance at Saints.

Correct but he only moved him back after the nightmare at Hull. Where it became obvious that Mike Duff’s legs had gone.

I certainly think that Vydra has had an impact. I’d also suggest that alongside him, the games where we’ve begun to look much better have been when JBG has been in the team and on song.

I think Vydra and JBG are our two most gifted players but JBGs injuries and Vydra being criminally under used have made us less effective. JBG has now seemingly got over his injuries and Vydra has had an extended run and it is showing dividends. Vydra makes Wood so much better and JBG is what he is. And as has been mentioned maybe Vydra is inspiring McNeil. Add to this a feeling of confidence brought about from above and things are looking rosey.
Maybe the critics of Vyds are right about him missing chances and not scoring enough but who cares, he brings so much more to the table.

Spot on. We are pressing high up the pitch. I believe it’s caused a few conceded goals but I also believe it’s helped us force quite a few. We play with a little more panache now! It’s not just sit back and wait till we grab one. Tactical masterclass by Dyche because teams just believe we are going to sit back and then boom...”Wut tHiS IS nOt WuT D0N CarLO tOlD uS WOulD HaPpEn?!??” Edit to say: I believe Everton are a class side and Don Carlo is a fantastic manager!

The 2 games where our football has excelled in the last batch have been where Lowts (new lease of life after being asked to bomb forward more) and JBG combine. They really work well together. Factor in Vydra and we go from hacking it forward to playing those lovely one touch triangles and lay offs in and around the last third

People mention Vydra above, but I think it may have been taken out of context by other posters. Its not him so much that has single handidly changed our style, but those around him who've adapted the system to play more to his own strengths.

Its good to see, because we are so used to playing to a Barnes/Wood attack, so being able to switch the way we play so effectively based on the players we field is going to be crucial going forward.

We should be just as adept as playing to Vydra's strength as we are knocking the ball up to Barnes.

Vydra has done well (even though he still looks unlikely to score) but putting this all on him is amusing.

Ignoring the injuries clearing up, ignoring having the players to play in their preferred position, ignoring playing once a week and getting some much needed rest into the squad and ignoring our best forward Wood being fit again then I suppose you could come up with it is all down to Vydra.

We will have to remember though when we are allowed back in he might only have 1 spare shirt per game so those Vydra can I have your shirt signs will need to be done on a rotation basis.

It's never one thing though, just a combination of factors.
Vyds is definitely part of that, the one thing we all knew we lacked was pace up top.
Wood back and fit, will only get better as he finds his match sharpness.
Josh pressing higher up the pitch, and getting the ball back in more dangerous areas, although Jack played a part as well with some impressive performances on his return.
JBG and McNeil both back on fire, which is mostly down to the team ethos.
Since the Villa match we have started passing forward instead of sideways or backwards. We have started getting bodies in the box, and even when we haven't played well, as against WBA and Spurs, we continued to try and get forward and bodies in the box. That has to be down to SD, I wish he'd done it sooner. Lowts and Pieters have both looked far better in this style.
When you can defend as well as we do anyway, any sort of half decent attack and we look a real force. The last few games we've looked a lot better than half decent.

As the thread has confirmed there are several reasons for this uplift in form and performance, another one has been the absence of Brady.
